Chadwick Boseman - Rumored Top Choice For BLACK PANTHER Expresses Interest

Last May, Latino Review's El Mayimbe reported actor Chadwick Boseman ("42") was at the top of Marvel's shortlist of actors they are looking at to play Black Panther. In a recent interview Chadwick expressed interest in the potential role and...Green Lantern!

Chadwick Boseman made quite a name for himself in the past year based on his highly-acclaimed performance as legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson in the 2013 movie, 42. Since the film came out interest in the actor has grown, and according to Latino Review's El Mayimbe one studio in particular, Marvel, supposedly has Chadwick among their shortlist to play T'Challa in a live-action Black Panther film. Recently, Chadwick was asked about having interest in the role by blackfilm.com while he was doing press for his upcoming film, Draft Day, which stars Kevin Costner.
Could you see yourself playing Black Panther?

Chadwick Boseman: I could see myself doing anything in terms of comic book, action, or anything like that. Black Panther, in particular, I’m not going to answer that.

If not, then which character?

Chadwick Boseman: Let me put to you this way. If it’s character driven, I’ll do it. As long as it’s character driven, I would love to do it. If it’s just you in a suit and you with powers, then it doesn’t interest me, no matter how big it is. As long as it’s character driven, I’m totally into it. If they could figure out how to do Black Panther and make it fit the original or adapt to the times we’re in now and be new and innovative and be character driven and has the sense of what the comic book is supposed to be, but not bound by it, then yes, of course, I would want to do it.

As he finished speaking on the record, he asked if folks wanted to see a Black Panther film and I said yes. Then he asked,
“What about Green Lantern?”

Green Lantern? Well, that seemed to come out of the blue. What could it mean? Is Chadwick Boseman hinting about a potential role in the long-rumored Justice League movie? Maybe, he's referring to a Green Lantern solo film that would reboot the franchise using John Stewart instead of Ryan Reynold's Hal Jordan? Maybe, it doesn't mean anything. Thoughts?

... Black Panther should be in Phase Three or lead Phase Four (2018/19).

Eh, not my preferred choice for T'Challa, but not a bad one. Better than some other choices I've seen.

I say Chitwel is my top choice. I think Chadwick would be good for a younger t'challa, and Jon Stewart played by Chitwel would be good, possibly Admiral Jon Stewart?

I like the idea of doing Jon instead of Hal. Hal could definitely be in the franchise, but Jon would be nice. He is a cool character and adds diversity.

Marvel is seriously delaying this. I think Ant-Man is the issue. If they made Ant-Man already, BP would be leading Phase Three instead.

YES! Cool choice!

He's also about to play James Brown! lol

Shouldn't have taken this long to get BP on the big screen but I won't complain because I have no idea what marvel is planning. Ant-Man should've switched with Guardians place to be honest.

Wouldn't Marvel get a director first before choosing an actor? I feel like most of the directors in the origin films were collaborative with Marvel when choosing lead actors. Kenneth picked Hemsworth and Hiddleston.. I think Johnston chose Evans. Gunn chose Pratt and it looks like Wright is choosing who he wants. Even Whedon chose Ruffalo over Norton.

I wouldn't believe any casting rumors until there is a director announced.

@TheBlackNerd

Agreed.

I understand Marvel's motivation for "new things", but Guardians has no place in Phase Two. Ant-Man should've been in Guardians place, Black Panther should've taken Ant-Man's place and Guardians could've been slipped somewhere down the road in Phase Three.

And I agree with the guy. It HAS to be character driven. Wouldn't mind a cameo from any one of the Avengers members but I really think Black Panther could hold off his own movie. The scenery, the technology, training, empire and villain(s) are all things to make one film worth the while. If they can do a space adventure featuring the guardians, a space invasion featuring aliens going toe to toe with the avenger and Demi Gods battling monsters in Asgard there's NO excuse why Wakanda should be hard to pull off...PERIOD!

Exactly bro! Like honestly The Guardians serve no importance towards the story of Ultron and I'm 110% sure they won't even make a cameo within the film. (Well unless it's a warning for Thanos coming or something) but yeah Ant-Man could've had a young Hank Pym and Wasp all in time for Ultron's creation and etc...I guess because they had already had the script done years ago they knew what they would be doing with the character before we did. But yeah Guardians could've honestly been the new film right before Avengers 3 just like how they did with cap before the first Avengers film they could've done the same with Guardians before Avengers 3. They'll all be good films regardless but you just sit back and say "what if?" sometimes...

I definitely could dig Chad. Great points @blacknerd and @Kurne, I agree. I wish his movie was the one coming out soon. And like @Jerber said, he definitely needs to interact with Cap and Stark or at least Cap, will be disappointed if we don't get that.

I finally saw '42' last week on HBO and I was more than surprised by not only the film but Boseman's performance. I now know why the film was a big hit when it was released. And give it up to Harrison Ford for what was a dope, underrated supporting role performance!

That being said, I'm mining early issues of 'The Avengers' Vol. 1 right now where the Black Panther is basically the BMOC of the team and to echo Supercat's comment, I wouldn't be mad if my man was cast as the Wakandan king.

Well how story they had the motion comic that came on BET a while back starring Black Panther. They also had him appear in A:EMH which actually even helped me become more fond of him. Honestly, I think there's a lot of hype surrounding him amongst the African-American crowd. Every time I go on IGN, here or even WSHH and a superhero related vid comes up on regards to Avengers, Marvel or African/African-American heroes people bring up his name like crazy. Even I was surprised that many people knew about him. Who knows?

All of Marvel Studios' films with a slight exception for Thor: TDW have been character driven movies. He'd be right at home if that's what he wants to be apart of.

Goddammit Marvel is always scooping up the young talent while WB scratch their butts. I'm glad Chadwick himself threw GL out there because he's who I want for John Stewart.

ElMayimbe said that Chadwick Boseman was on Marvel's radar for the role of BP like 2 years ago I think.

He is younger then I would want for T'challa but I would be okay with him.

As for the part about John Stewart I could see him doing well as that character. But the next Green Lantern movie needs to be a buddy film. Something like the Lethal Weapon films. But with Superheroes instead. How cool would it be to see a Green Lantern Corps movie with Hal and John saving the universe. I would also like to see Guy and Kyle in the Green Lantern Corps but I see it more having two GLs not all four.

I'm surprised no one is picking up on the fact that the reporter said Chadwick asked him "What about Green Lantern? ". Like, he brought up GL when he was being asked about BP. Maybe he's been having talks with WB about GL? He is after all one of WBs most recent poster boys.

T'Challa is SO character-driven!!!!

I am slavering with anticipation to have T'Challa, The Black Panther, added to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The other characters that would just cause a "geek-gasm" for me in the theaters, aside from those characters already "green-lighted", or already in production, are: THE INUHMANS, NAMOR, and MS. MARVEL.

I would have an honest heart attack seeing the story of T'Challa on-screen, and this coming from someone who does NOT care for the recent casting announcements for Johnny Storm.
