James Cameron Says Scripts For 3 AVATAR Sequels Nearly Complete

Director James Cameron ("Terminator") took part in a Reddit Ask Me Anything question and answer session today and revealed that scripts for three Avatar sequels will be completed in six weeks.

James Cameron has directed some of the highest grossing films of all-time like, Titanic and Terminator: Judgement Day, and of course 2009's Avatar. Since Avatar came out Cameron has been plotting a return to Pandora, and not it sounds as though he has scripts for the sequels all set and ready to... well, nearly done. "The second, third and fourth films all go into production simultaneously," Cameron explained in a Reddit AMA. "They're essentially all in preproduction now, because we are designing creatures, settings, and characters that span all three films. And we should be finished with all three scripts within the next, I would say, six weeks."

The first of these three Avatar sequels won't land in theaters until December of 2016. Cameron had sole credit on the first Avatar film, but this time the director/writer collaborated with: Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Shane Salerno, in order to complete his three sequels.

During the Q&A Cameron was also asked about a rumor that manifested last September regarding Arnold Schwarzenegger being eyed for the villain role in Avatar 2. Cameron basically shot down the possibility of adding his old friend Arnold to the cast, "I don't see a role as the scripts are coming together that would be appropriate for him, so I would say probably not."
AVATAR takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

Cast: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Stephen Lang

Not to keep piling on here, but Avatar was the most generic, most unoriginal, most overrated film in the last decade. Easily. It wasn't particularly bad, but it wasn't all that great either. Bland story, bland acting, pretty planet. Yawn. It'll be interesting to see if these unnecessary sequels make nearly as much money as the first one.

I liked the first one, it was definitely overrated but I liked it. I'm hoping the sequels can raise the bar a little bit in terms of storytelling.

I've still never seen it, despite everyone I know insisting I'll like it because I like Star Wars.

I feel the iron isn't nearly as hot anymore, but am interested to see if people get all caught up in the hype of a second one like they did the first time.

May as well cast Jennifer Lopez, if we aren't going with authentic native for the role.

It's almost been 6 years since the last one. I can't see how anyone can be excited. I seriously can't even remember the names of the leads.

The bad guy from the last film whose name I can't remember has to be one of the most generic, bland, 2D, uninteresting, uninvolving villains since Zod in Superman 2.

The generic villain even had a [frick]ing scar across his head. Oh, and all the military characters also all enjoy torturing the Smurfs and take glee in it except for one or two that are lead characters. Lol. [frick]ing damn was everyone in this film generic and boring.

"Zod in Superman 2."

I wasn't aware taking a jab at a film from the 80s that starred Terrance Stamp is taking a jab at MoS which came out last year. How rude of me.

Reading comprehension is important. MAK explicitly stated, and I quote, "...since Zod in Superman 2. I don't see any mention of MoS anywhere here except by you, DrunkenPirateNukem.

This formula has been in circulation for a while...

At least with sequels, we might get a new story.
