James Cameron has directed some of the highest grossing films of all-time like,
Titanic and
Terminator: Judgement Day, and of course 2009's
Avatar. Since
Avatar came out Cameron has been plotting a return to Pandora, and not it sounds as though he has scripts for the sequels all set and ready to... well, nearly done. "T
he second, third and fourth films all go into production simultaneously," Cameron explained in a Reddit AMA. "
They're essentially all in preproduction now, because we are designing creatures, settings, and characters that span all three films. And we should be finished with all three scripts within the next, I would say, six weeks."
The first of these three Avatar sequels won't land in theaters until December of 2016. Cameron had sole credit on the first Avatar film, but this time the director/writer collaborated with:
Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and
Shane Salerno, in order to complete his three sequels.
During the Q&A Cameron was also asked about a
rumor that manifested last September regarding
Arnold Schwarzenegger being eyed for the villain role in
Avatar 2. Cameron basically shot down the possibility of adding his old friend Arnold to the cast, "
I don't see a role as the scripts are coming together that would be appropriate for him, so I would say probably not."
AVATAR takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.
