First Wave Of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Reviews

Reviews for 20th Century Fox's latest X-Men film are starting to pour in. Come see what some of the top film critics think of Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past.

By nailbiter111 - May 12, 2014 05:05 PM EST

EMPIRE: "Best X-Men Film Since the Second One"
"But what we do get here is largely fantastic, not only re-energising old-favourite characters (and after his two spin-offs, Wolverine was in dire need of re-energisation) but introducing intriguing new ones. Most surprising is the fact that the super-speedy Quicksilver (Evan Peters), whose Ramona Flowers-y appearance did not inspire much confidence in marketing materials, turns out to be the coolest thing in the film. " - Nick de Semlyen

DIGITAL SPY: "Nostalgia and New Frontier"
"Where Days of Future Past ends up may not be entirely to everyone's tastes, but judged on its own terms this is a movie that delivers excellent performance and brains to compliment its bang-for-your-buck spectacle." - Simon Reynolds

BLEEDING COOL: "Most Ambitious X-Men Movie to Date"
"There’s no denying that Days of Future Past is the most ambitious X-Men movie to date, stuffed full of ideas, overflowing with action, and almost exploding with characters, plot points and twists. That it manages to make sense is impressive enough, that it drives forward through all of the material without ever becoming boring is just two doors down the street from awe-inspiring."
- Brendon Connelly

HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: "Sentinels' Attacks are Rendered with a Chilling Visceral Charge"
"It's hard to imagine fanboys having too much to grumble about here, as Singer has pulled together an ambitious, suspenseful screen chapter that secures a future for the franchise while facilitating continued reinvention. Audiences should sit tight through the end credits crawl for an enigmatic signoff scene that provides a taste of the next installment, X-Men: Apocalypse." - David Rooney

VARIETY: "Strikingly Ambitious Continuation"
"No skyscrapers blow up, no cities are leveled, and while the White House and a football stadium suffer some serious structural damage, the wholesale destruction of human civilization is kept to a refreshing minimum in “X-Men: Days of Future Past” — just one of several respects in which this strikingly ambitious yet intimately scaled entertainment distinguishes itself from so much of its comicbook-movie kind. " - Justin Chang

THE WRAP: "Often Feels More Like a Set-up"
"Still, this is the best “X-Men” movie since Singer went off to other pursuits, and it puts enough of a whammy onto the mutant narrative to allow future sequels to veer off in any number of directions. Too bad that in doing so, it, like “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” often feels more like a set-up for movies to come rather than a satisfying experience in and of itself." - Alonso Duralde

TELEGRAPH: "A Mess of Mutants"
"The film squanders both of its casts, reeling from one fumbled set-piece to the next. It seems to have been constructed in a stupor, and you watch in a daze of future past. " - Robbie Collin

The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from “X-Men: First Class,” in an epic battle that must change the past – to save our future.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past will be directed by Bryan Singer ("Usual Suspects"). The cast includes: Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Peter Dinklage, Nicholas Hoult, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Lucas Till, Evan Peters, Daniel Cudmore, Booboo Stewart, Omar Sy, Fan Bingbing, Evan Jonigkeit, Adan Canto and Josh Helman, X-Men: Days Of Future Past hits UK cinemas on May 22 and US cinemas the following day.

I don't know what to think about that last review, and not because it's a negative review, it's just something about it...

I'm expecting this to be just short of good. With Singer there's always something missing that could push his films over that edge.

Of all the reviews, this one gets me the most excited. Mass destruction and death isn't bad in and of itself, but it's just so played out recently. It's starting to make every action blockbuster look exactly the same. The fact that they can minimize the damage but still pump up the tension and sense of danger is a great sign. Dying to see this movie!

Yep, this film was EPIC! Will see it again:D But Singer still doesn't understand some of the characters. Warpath, Storm etc Wasted potential tbh:/

This will be my last movie I see before I leave for Basic Training. I'm hoping it doesn't suck for that reason and the reason that as an MCU fanboy we won't get the rights to mutants for a very long time.

I prefer my opinion.
I don't like the general concept of these "Brian Singer" X-Men.
Everything wrong from the first movie, the tone is wrong, if it's good movie won't change the idea that movies were for a path where it should never have gone.

It wont be no Winter Soldier but it wont be no Amazing Spider-Man 2 too (not that I hate that movie).

Never trust a review though that ain't from a comic book fan about a cbm :p

Awesome.

I think that Robbie Collin wrote that review simply to put in that stupid pun at the end... Looks like a Zauri propaganda review.....

The Metacritic score is looking really good too since the positive reviews are quite glowing! 73 so far, that puts it in elite CBM company if it holds.

Let's be civil today. No flame war today. Look forward to this story. Never cared for the comic book after Byrne left. This was one of the best X-Men story lines. One of his last contributions.

Sounds like this is shaping up to be a good flick! Hey, what better person to get this franchise back on track than the guy who did the best X-Men movie so far (X-2)!

@LEEE

actually, I rarely trust CBM fans with reviews... With notable exceptions of McNyagano and Ror... Most CBM fans are to slavish to source material, and too biased within certain studios and perceptions of characters.
