UPDATE: Rian Johnson To Write & Direct Next Two STAR WARS Films!

Here's some big news for a Friday evening: Deadline report that Looper director Rian Johnson will take over from J.J. Abrams, and helm Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX, and also write the scripts for 'em. More on this past the jump.

Fans wondered if Star Trek director J.J. Abrams would stay on and direct  the final two entries in the new Star Wars trilogy, and now it seems we have the answer. According to Deadline, Lucasfilm has made a deal with Looper writer-director Rian Johnson to write and direct Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX. The site say they don't know too much more about it at this point, but with the hiring of Chronicle‘s Josh Trank and Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards for their standalone films, it seems clear that Lucasfilm/Disney are looking for young, talented and also geek-friendly directors to kickstart their new journey to the galaxy far far away.

UPDATE: THR report that Johnson will only direct Episode VIII, but he is writing a treatment for Episode IX.

"Rarely have I seen the revival of a film franchise stir so much fervor as Star Wars, among hot young filmmakers who grew up loving George Lucas’ original film trilogy."

This is very surprising. I'm curious as to why JJ isn't staying on for the trilogy. Imagine if he gets involved with DC?! Green Lantern & Flash anyone?

this is bad news for episode 7, they must not have a lot of faith in jjs vision. Or he isn't doing every tiny little thing the mouse wants.

Well this was out of the blue. Hey since JJ is only doing one Star Wars movie, can we delay Star Trek 3 to 2017 JJ can direct that one and not [frick]ing Roberto Orci.

Shit get him on Flash/Green Lantern, that would be a dream come true.

Looper was weak. It had potential, but fell apart - not a good directorial choice and I hated Chronicle - again, potential and good concepts both, but the final products were B listers at best.

I'm thinking that whoever does a better job out of Abrams and Johnson will probably direct Episode IX
