Today on ABC’s The View, Whoopi Goldberg announced that Marvel's current incarnation of Thor will be deemed unworthy to wield Mjolnir, and the hammer (and mantle) will be taken up by a female character.
"It’s a huge day in the Marvel Universe. Thor, the God of Thunder, he messed up, and he’s no longer worthy to hold that damn hammer of his. For the first time in history, that hammer is being held by a woman. That’s right. Thor is a woman!” Which woman is not revealed, although she is rumoured to be former
Spawn mainstay Angela, and the artwork below certainly resembles that character.
More details are sparse, but Goldberg also mentions that this character will be someone who was saved by the Thunder-God in the past, and she will indeed be known as Thor. We'll update when any more info becomes available, but for now be sure to leave your thoughts in the usual place.
UPDATE: In a press release, Jason Arron (who will write the new series) had the following to say about this new character.
“This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before." The new female Thor will launch in a new series, Thor #1, launching in the fall. Aaron will stay on as writer, joined by artist Russell Dauterman.
