Trailer For THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG Extended Edition Hits

Yahoo! have just released a pretty cool trailer for the upcoming extended cut of the middle film in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy. There's more Smaug, more Beorn, and a character that was completely cut from the movie: Thorin's father, Thrain.

Bilbo Baggins continues his journey with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all-a creature more terrifying than any other; one which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself-the Dragon Smaug.

The extended Blu-ray cut contains 25 extra minutes not seen in theaters, and over nine hours of bonus features. It'll be released November 4th.

"There's more Smaug, more Beorn, and a character that was completely cut from the movie: Thorin's father, Thrain."

Funny how there's no "more" of the actual main character of this entire trilogy...Bilbo. How he manages to consistently get the shaft in his own trilogy is beyond me.

More Smaug? Okay, I get that we probably need more of him - his epic game of hide and seek with the dwarves was a little on the short side.

MORE Beorn? Was there a character like that in the movie in the first place? I don't remember him.

Thrain? Yeah, well, another dwarf, why not? Although if that's him in the picture I don't like his design, what with the long, grey beard and the big nose and all. Better put in more handsome dwarves like Kili, or just give Kili more screentime.

Sorry, all in all I have to say that unless the new parts flesh out the Tauriel/Kili romance and bring us a little more awesome elven action I'm simply not interested. Jackson and Co really need to get their priorities straight.

The extra and extended scenes in the BluRay for The 1st Hobbit movie made the film a far better version to watch than the theatrical cut so I'm hoping the same works for Desolation of Smaug.

Not sure what the complaints are about. "Unlike LOTR, The Hobbit Series completely ignores parts of the book while making up other parts.". News Flash: LOTR did the same things. LOTR completely ignored Radagast and his significance in helping Gandalf escape Isengard. Completely ignores Tom Bombadil. Completely changes Aragon's motivation for joining the Fellowship, The Army of the Dead's purpose in Return of the King ect. People should have known what they were getting themselves into when entering the Hobbit series. And the most asinine complaint of them all: The Hobbit does not have the same feel as LOTR". The Hobbit occurred almost decades before the events of LOTR. It occurred before the resurgance of Mordor, orcs and before Dwarfs became an after thought in the Middle Earth mythology.

@BlackHulk The difference is: in LotR, Peter Jackson had to trim things down. For the most part, he had to carefully edit things out that he felt were unimportant to the overall larger story. And in the long run, things like Radaghast's inadvertent role in helping Saruman trick Gandalf (not sure he ever helped Gandalf escape Isengard...the Gwaihir helped. But I do need to re-read it sometime soon haha) is rather trivial. Bombadil really doesn't change all that much story-wise by being left out.

In The Hobbit, Jackson had to add things in. He had to completely invent things in order to pad the run-time. He had to depend on very lackluster descriptions in the LotR appendices and somehow turn it into something that could be portrayed cinematically and fill in the gaps.

That's the difference. Instead of being able to pick and choose the absolute best parts of Tolkien's books, Jackson threw everything and the kitchen sink in The Hobbit. And frankly...Tolkien's material is miles and miles better than Jackson's.

People still expect movie adaptions to be 100% true to the source.
The Hobbit book was pretty boring to me. I love the movies.

That's not to say that Jackson didn't add invented things into the LotR...because he absolutely did. And it's no coincidence that most book-readers (including me) can't stand those things: Frodo sending Sam away in RotK, bringing the Army of the Dead to Minas Tirith, making Aragorn into a reluctant king rather than a king-in-exile who was patiently waiting for the right timing, bringing Frodo and Sam into Osgiliath, ect etc etc.

So I'm not a blind devotee of LotR...there's lots of things I love in that trilogy, and there's TONS of things that I don't. But compared to The Hobbit movies? LotR may as well be on a completely other planet in terms of quality. Those films functioned as BOTH adaptations of a book, and as standalone movies. The Hobbit fails miserably on both fronts, IMO.

@SauronsBANE. Indeed there a number of instances where Peter Jackson changed things in LOTR. Granted the Hobbit is a much shorter book, but he said it was made into three movies to add material from the appendices in the third movie. But even with the extended versions of the Hobbit movies, they are still an hour shorter than the theatrical versions of LOTR movies. And the Hobbit story wise was very bland and to the point when compared to LOTR, so it seems Jackson wanted to challenge himself by going against conventional thinking and bringing action to a book that lacks action for 2/3rd of the story.

SauronsBANE - 9/17/2014, 6:10 PM
@BlackHulk The Hobbit book is MUCH shorter, that's absolutely true. I even agree that there's no way the story could've been told coherently in just one movie...it needed two at the very least. But Jackson isn't just adding material from the appendices to the 3rd movie...he's been adding it in all throughout. What he refers to as material from the appendices is explaining where Gandalf goes after leaving the Company and what he's up to. All the Radaghast stuff, all the Necromancer stuff, all the Dol Guldor stuff is tangentially related to the appendices. I say 'tangentially' because some of it is taken directly from the appendices, and the rest is completely made up by Jackson.

Not only that, but some of his invented stuff DIRECTLY contradicts the book: the involvement of Azog (who's been dead for DECADES in the book when the story starts), searching for the tombs of the Nazgul (they never die in the books), Gandalf's fight with the Necromancer (that kind of "Harry Potter-esque" magic is the exact OPPOSITE of Tolkien's version of 'magic')...all of that significantly lowers the quality of the movies, IMO.

I'd say that the story of The Hobbit isn't bland. It's simple. And that was the point. It's a simple story that focused on Bilbo's character arc: going from a comfortable, lazy, cowardly homebody to a heroic, brave, clever, resourceful character who gains the respect of his companions. That Bilbo-centric story has been completely swallowed up by everything else in Jackson's Hobbit movies, to the extent that Bilbo has become an unimportant side-character in his own trilogy of movies (hence my very first comment here). So I argue that adding in all the action and "epicness" and all that really does a disservice to the story that Tolkien was trying to tell.

Yeah! Ain't nobody got time for logical, constructive discussion!

I'm rather glad Jackson will be moving on after this trilogy. A few small budget NZ films might do him some good.

@Nick56, really? I had problems with the first movie, but thought the second was much superior. I really really enjoyed it and looking forward to the extended version. I'm with you hoping the third one knocks it out of the stadium!

Godzilla, I think you're being a little harsh, but I can respect your opinion. Comparing this trilogy to say the last Star Wars one I would say it is much better. I suppose I'm just bias to anything Tolkien

Jesus Christ people, is there some sort of delusion going around where people think that if they bitch enough they'll get their way? If these films are so "disappointing", why keep watching them? Just to have something to bitch about?
