Kong - King Of The Apes will start out as a feature-length film that will be followed by 12 half-hour episodes. The story won't be a retread of the events of Skull Island, but instead be set in 2050, and deal with the "8th Wonder of the World" being framed and hunted by giant robotic dinosaurs (yes, this one's being aimed at the little 'uns folks). Avi Arad will produce the show. “We’re thrilled to be working with Avi who has made some of the most successful action and adventure franchises today and whose Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventure series has been very popular on Netflix around the world,” Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said. “With 41 Entertainment as our partner on this, we continue to work with some of the finest animation studios around the world to create shows that will appeal to kids of all ages globally.” Arad added: “I always loved King Kong. This is a unique opportunity to introduce him in brilliant CGI animation to kids worldwide with the power of Netflix.”

"Set in 2050, Kong becomes a wanted fugitive after wrecking havoc at Alcatraz Island’s Natural History and Marine Preserve. What most humans on the hunt for the formidable animal don’t realize, though, is that Kong was framed by an evil genius who plans to terrorize the world with an army of enormous robotic dinosaurs. As the only beast strong enough to save humanity from the mechanical dinos, Kong must rely on the help of three kids who know the truth about him."

Little do people know is that they're actually using this as a way to draw in the attention of the kids for the upcoming "Skull Island" film. I don't blame em, just think about how the little kids felt watching King Kong in the theater back in 2005. lol Great film but for some people it was just too long.

We already had one of these. A BETTER one! It was called "Kong: The Animated Series" from the year 2000

Could that "evil genius" turn out to be Dr. Who (no, not THAT "Dr. Who"), who fought Kong with a robot duplicate called "Mechani-Kong" in the 60s Rankin/Bass animated series and Toho's KING KONG ESCAPES film?

I'm not digging this artwork. Kong looks like a wuss—way too cartoony, and way too big. The scale has me worried that they are already planning on pumping Kong up to kaiju-sized proportions for the rebooted Skull Island, with the intent of someday pitting him against the new Godzilla, the biggest incarnation of the big G ever.

This idea might have played in the campy 1960s, but it just seems out of place with the serious tone and the seamless CGI realism of today's modern "monster movies." Please Hollywood, no "reimagined" version of KK vs. G! I mean, let's face it, as much as I love the big ape, these characters, in their truest incarnations, are just NOT in the same league. Kong would have about as much chance of beating Godzilla as Bambi did.

@capaware—I didn't realize that the 60s cartoon Kong used the same villain as "King Kong Escapes." How did that happen?! Or were they just the same in name only?

@KingGorilla - As I recall, Rankin-Bass wanted to do a KING KONG cartoon, but RKO would only give them the rights if they made a movie, too, so Rankin-Bass went to Toho and made KING KONG ESCAPES. The cartoon did not take place in the same continuity as the movie, although there were similarities (both Kongs lived on Mondo Island and fought villains called Dr. Who who used robot doubles of Kong). In the movie, Carl Nelson is a military commander and Susan is his lieutenant (and Kong's love interest); in the cartoon, Nelson is the father of a teenage Susan. There were a couple of DVD releases of the cartoon which included some episodes with Dr. Who, but unfortunately, none with MechaniKong.
