Ror Reviews: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES

This Michael Bay produced remake has been out in the States for months now, but it's only being released in the UK and Ireland this weekend. So if you haven't seen it yet and want to know what this lifelong TMNT fan made of it, click on for my take..

Review Opinion

I think it's fair to say that fans didn't like the sound of a single thing about this TMNT reboot from the moment they heard it was going to be produced by Michael Bay, and directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans, Battle LA). Then came the news that Shredder would be a white dude named Sachs, the (mis)casting of Megan Fox as April O'Neil, the first reveal of the massive, hulking new Turtles -- basically, a miracle was needed to get the Heroes in a Half Shell faithful back on board.  But then when promotion kicked in properly, some of the trailers/clips got a few laughs, many got used to the Turtle designs, and complete nerd-rage started to subside a little -- to the point where many even wished the movie well and hoped for the best.

Well, you most certainly didn't get the best, but nor is this the disaster many reviews have dismissed it as.

Some very silly changes to the accepted-as-best origin of Splinter and the Turtles (he was Hamoto Yoshi, touched rat, touched mutagen) are hard to swallow, and the story overall is a load of bollocks -- but then you weren't expecting anything else were you? Not that that's an excuse, it's just that my expectations on that front were already so low that I wasn't surprised (or particularly pissed off) when they were met. There's a rich dude (William Fichtner) who wants to infect a city so he can get...richer, his master (Shredder) who wants to capture the Turtles to achieve this (magic blood nonsense again), and Megan Fox and Will Arnett running around in the midst of it.

To be fair, Fox is fine. She doesn't exactly set the screen alight, but she's likable and compelling enough in a relatively thankless role. Arnett, too, does the best with what he has, and if Fichtner begins to ham it up too much towards the end, well, he's a frackin Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles villain! None of those guys matter though, because you'll be pleased to hear that Leo, Donnie, Raph and Mikey are pretty damn great. The awesome foursome definitely could have used a bit more characterization overall, but if you know their story going in, that shouldn't matter too much. All of the voices are spot on, and you'll even get used to their appearance; though there really wasn't any need to have them so large (beyond one scene in which they have to hold up an aerial tower) and it reeks of Bay and co.'s "bigger is better" policy.

A pretty dumb movie, but unlike the Transformers flicks for example, there is a little bit of heart there too, some genuine laughs, and at 90 minutes it doesn't outstay its welcome. Could and should have been better, but I think TMNT fans will find a lot to enjoy at the same time. The rest of you though? A rental!

Three stars seems decent. Haven't seen this yet so I'll probably buy it when it's released on DVD.

Although Godzilla is a better movie by miles, I went out of TMNT feeling exactly the same about both. I mean, both should be waaaaay better movies, but both are just ok, they aren't nearly as bad as some critics (in case of TMNT) and fans (in case of both) have said, but there were some crappy choices like Godzilla appearing just like 10-20 mins in his own movie or Master Splinter learning ninjitsu from a book! I was like: COME ON! HE IS FRICKING HAMATO YOSHI!

3/5 is exactly what I gave it. It ain't great but it's entertaining. Certainly not the worst Turtles movie out there.

Megan Fox, and some of the the vide game CGI were my only complaints with this film. Oh and Leonardo getting his shell handed to him in almost EVERY fight scene. Other than that it was enjoyable but there's PLENTY of room for improvements.

Good review. Only part you missed was the murder of the character Shredder. Bay's influence was all up in that. Movie could have been so much better but what can you do? Those concept art pics released a few days ago would have helped this movie a lot, but as you said Bay and Co and that "bigger is better" policy as you put it killed it for me.

Pretty much sums it up. I still didn't get used to how bad the turtles looked however. I'm sorry they just look horrible. 0-:-/

This movie sucked. It's got nothing on the 1990's movie. Comic book-accurate looks for the TMNT, Foot Soldiers, and Shredder, follows the comics without creating a goofy origin story, and a more believable April O'Neil. While the reboot had some funny moments, it won't stand the test of time as the 90's film has.

Have to disagree on the voices part though, two months after seeing I still most dislike Knoxville voicing Leo. >.> Hope Pete Ploszek gets to finally do it next time. I would like Leo to actually have more variation in how he comes across and not sound gruff and cold the entire time...nor 40.

@DrDoom That rat faced actress would make a better Splinter than April.
Stop campaigning for her...find another role to push her on.

@DrDoom

I had been saying over and over again that Anna Kendrick should have gotten that role and when I saw that she actually did try out for it and still lost to Megan Fox, I gave up on life.

Went to see this with the kids last weekend. It was fun. The kids enjoyed it (well, they did when the Turtles appeared)I enjoyed it more than I should....
It was certainly more entertaining than Transormers 4

Why would anyone want any great actors/actresses touching this movie? It's bad enough big names like Fox, Arnett and Fichner were attached to this and you guys wanted Anna [frick]ing Kendrick to be in it? If it were a better Ninja Turtles movie sure but not this. She's way too good for this and you guys know it. I mean she wouldn't have had much to work with look at what everyone else did, they did fine with the material given to them and that's exactly what would have happened had miss Kendrick been in it.

If the movie came out in the early 2000's it would have been a three. People would have been amazed at the special effects. Had it come out in the 1990's it would have been a four or a five. The thing is it came out in 2014. We have seen Avitar, Dark Knight, & Avengers already & in the same year we seen Captain America: Winter Soldier & Guardians of the Galaxy both come out as MUCH superior films. If you are going to say either of those is a four or five star film then it becomes difficult to say this Turtles film was three stars.

That all being said my 11 year old hated the movie. He also hated the most recent Transformers movie and he loves both those franchises. I guess he is growing up and starting to realize that just because they slap the name of something you enjoy on a product, it doesn't necessarily mean that product is going to be any good.

The movie was good. It was entertaining but nothing to go crazy over. It's worth a rental and no need to own it on DVD. Just like Days of Futures Past. I agree with the 3 stars.
