During a keynote address at the annual conference of the Confederation of British Industry, Pinewood Shepperton chief exec Ivan Dunleavy confirmed that the eight instalment in Disney/Lucasfilm's Star Wars franchise would indeed return to shoot at the U.K. studio. Episode VII (now officially titled "The Force Awakens") wrapped production there recently having also shot in Abu Dhabi and Iceland, but the still-untitled eight movie will be written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) with Disney scheduled to release the movie in 2017. Before that though, Pinewood will play host to Sam Mendes' new James Bond flick, which will see Daniel Craig reprise the role of 007.

This is a franchise that needs to be built on sentiment, glad it is with the sequel trilogy.
Can't wait to see VII, I can feel it'll be the best Star Wars movie ever.

@maxleresistant, I don't think he'd have time, especially not to make a quality film. They'll probably be doing post on Episode VII until the eleventh hour, and Episode VIII should be coming December 2018. He'd have to be juggling post on VII and pre-production on VIII, and immediately jump into shooting VIII shortly after VII comes out. Could he do it? Yeah, he could. But he'd probably feel burnt out as all hell, and VIII probably wouldn't end up being as good as it should or could be.

I won't say that I'm NOT excited for VII...but I can say that I am so far very underwhelmed. I suppose all that could change with the release of a teaser or full on trailer. Hard to say.

I loved the original trilogy, and enjoyed the prequel trilogy...not too sure what to think of the sequel trilogy (and beyond) yet though. A lot of it for me has to do with a LACK of CGI-crapfest antics. I do appreciate CGI when used sparingly and for good reason. Practical effects still reign supreme for me, and always will. If they cake on the CGI, that alone would kill this for me instantly. It's a distraction and takes away from what could be a good movie.

I guess time will tell. I suspect that you are not alone in your absence of excitement - just don't expect a lot of people to openly admit it since that would offend the nerd population immediately, and parents all over the world would burn you in effigy since they're the ones that would have to listen to them whine and cry all day long.

You say something like that and it draws out the haters.
All they'll do is compare it to those amazing moments they felt when they were MUCH younger and complain that it (VII) didn't/doesn't/won't make them FEEL exactly the same way. You can NEVER see a movie (or franchise) again for the first time.

All we can demand is that it is better than parts I, II, and III.
Nothing will ever be as good as IV and/or V.
It just can't be.
But it CAN be the start of an awesome trilogy.

That's all I hope for.

Don't let him touch the script. Looper is a nonsensical, plot hole ridden mess with cliche characters and horrible dialogue. I was not at all happy when they cast him, but hopefully they'll treat him like a tv director and just have him manage the filming.

Do we have a release date yet on VIII ? So far, all I've heard is 2017. Wlll it be December again, like VII (Dec. 2015) and the first stand-alone (Dec. 2016), or are they ever going to move back to May?

I think that's what the Lucasfilm Story Group is ultimately there for. Abrams probably helped put together a short treatment for Episode VIII, or he will soon, just as Rian Johnson is writing/directing VIII and will do a treatment for IX. Lucas was the driving creative force behind the prequels, and even though I like them, the originals were undeniably better. He was still /the/ force behind IV-VI, but he had two other directors, and there was far more conversation over what was going to happen. I think with something as big and pliable as Star Wars, something with a large fanbase with a very specific idea about what the series is, it helps to have some other opinions and perspectives. And agreed; I have alerts on for the Star Wars twitter page so I get a message the second the teaser goes live.
