Matthew Vaughn Thinks People Have "Had Enough" Of Christopher Nolan's Dark Superhero Style

The director of Kick-Ass and Kingsman: The Secret Service tells SFX Magazine that he believes the time of Nolan's "dark and gritty" style of superhero movie is at an end, and people are looking to more light-hearted fare such as Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Christopher Nolan is credited with reigniting the more realistic, gritty style of superhero film with his Dark Knight trilogy, and though those movies were obviously incredibly successful, Matthew Vaughn feels the general public are now turning away from the darker comic book flicks in favour of a lighter approach. "People want fun and escapism at the moment," the Kingsman: The Secret Service director tells SFX. "Look at the success of Guardians of the Galaxy. I think Nolan kick-started a very dark, bleak style of superhero escapism, and I think people have had enough of it." Personally I think there is, and always will be, room for both. Batman is a character that lends himself to a darker approach, while Marvel's team of intergalactic a-holes clearly benefit from not taking themselves quite so seriously -- at the end of the day it's apples and oranges. Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days Of Future Past may not have been as gritty or bleak as Nolan's Bat-flicks, but it was far from "light-hearted", and last year that did pretty well for itself along with GOTG. Something tells me if Chris Nolan was to return for a fourth Batman movie and made it the darkest of the lot, it'd still make all of the money. Anyway, that's just my take, but do you agree with Vaughn? Sound off in the usual place.

I totally agree. The dark gritty style lends itself well to Batman, but i feel the tone of Iron Man 1 is what all comic book movies should strive for. Screw the "extreme" grounded in reality bit as well. I wanted to see a Bane pumped up on Venom, not on some pain killers. I think television can benefit from this as well... hint hint @ Arrow

I don't care if it's dark or light as long as it's good.

I think the "dark" format works on a case by case basis. It did NOT work for a certain "hopeful" hero

Why does it have to be one or the other? I appreciate both styles as long as the story is good and done well.

It worked for Nolan's Batman films but I can't wait to (hopefully) see a more comic influenced Batman in Batman v Superman

Nolan's tone didn't work for Spider-Man.

The only characters that need to be dark and gritty are Batman and most of the Marvel Knights (Daredevil, Punisher). Cap 2 proved that you dot have to be dark and gritty to be a serious movie with meaning.

@Nomis

GOTG rocked!! Variety is a good thing, and as a first installment GOTG performed extremely well at the box office, it did better than Batman Begins

He only made 3 self contained movies that wre edgy and darker than the norm. No one really copied his style so it isnt really tired. Light and bright on the other hand is what most do and if anything thats tired out. I dont care the tone usually as long as its good

I'm tired of seeing essential characters being killed off unnecessarily, Matt. But i am grateful that Fox didn't go for your idea to make all the sentinals in DOFP look like Mystique and having the mutants fighting off 1000 Mystiques at the end.

@Nomis Plus the so called "Garbage of the Galaxy" D list group of heroes made more than Batman Begins staring one of the most popular comicbook characters of all time. By the way your acting that must eat you up inside.

As long as the style suits the film and it is good, I will take either. I loved MOS and GOTG.

Theyre all great stories. I dont know why we have to put down one. It was a well rounded story throughout three movies. Very satisfying payoff to his arch

Batman is a known character, one of the most iconic ever, and a group of unknowns nobody knew before did pretty damn well, out doing Batman Begins by a long shot. Plus it was critically acclaimed too. Not attacking you but that shit was poppin homie. Gotta give it the props

i like iron man and TWS's tone both had comedy moments that didnt feel forced and both also had dark moments. iron man 3 and TTDW both had serious moments but the humour was over the top and would almost immediately follow a serious moment.

I think Matthew means realisticness instead of an actual dark tone. X-men doftp couldn't work in a Nolan style universe, neither could a lot of cbm's. I think he means more along the lines of being more on the "fantasy" side and less on the "realistic". That's what I think cause people throw them around a lot as the same. I could be wrong tho lol

I want to agree but I can't, TDKRs has so many flaws. It was still enjoyable though

RIP Ledger, I really wish we could have seen Nolan's full vision with the Joker in TDKRs, it would have been a totally different movie.

C'mon, @Nomis is a troll.

Guardians of the Galaxy is awesome! But I agree, there's room for both. Not all the characters needs to be "Batman", so gritty and dark. And not all the characters need to be "Guardians of the Galaxy", so more funny and lightier.
