Find Out Which Marvel Characters James Gunn Couldn't Use In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

We've given one away in the thumbnail (and you might well guess the others since the director has expressed his fondness for them in the past), but during a recent podcast Gunn reveals that he really wanted to use certain characters in GOTG but couldn't because of rights issues.

Given the fact that there have been two team incarnations with various members in the comics, there were several character combinations James Gunn and Marvel could have settled on for Guardians Of The Galaxy -- but it turns out there might have been a couple of additions (replacements?) to the final team if only Marvel held the rights. Bug (aka "Galactic Warrior") began as one of the Micronauts before joining the second GOTG team, and Gunn has mentioned previously that he likes the character a lot. Likewise, Rom: Spaceknight, who actually started out as a toy before starring in his own cosmic comic series. While chatting to The Movie Crypt podcast, the directer admits that these guys probably would have made the cut if he had his way, along with The Badoon, who would have replaced the Sakaaran as "canon fodder". Here's what he had to say about all of this in full.

"There's characters that I've been interested in that I'm not allowed to use but I won't go so far as to say I definitely would have had them. There was a really good chance Bug was going to show up in the first movie but we do not own him... but, anyway, that was going to happen, perhaps. Listen, I really love Rom: Spaceknight, as everyone at Marvel knows because they've given me Rom stuff... but we don't own Rom. I would love for Rom: Spaceknight to show up because I love his story, I love the way he looks, I love everything about him... There are other characters, but basically, some characters we can work around and we can use. Listen, I wanted to use the Badoon, but the Badoon we don't own... they're really interesting. They would be like the cannon fodder guys who were like the Sakaaran in my movie... I wrote them as Badoon but I just did a search-replace-Sakaaran when I found out we didn't have Badoon. It was strangely late in the process when I found that out. They were designed as Badoon."

Doesn't sound like there's much hope those lads will show up in the sequel either, but there's always Quasar and Adam Warlock! Would you have liked to see Bug and Rom fight alongside Star Lord and co. in the movie?

Marvel needs to get the rights back to him. Hasbro isn't doing jack with him or the Micronauts.

Would've loved to have seen Bug & Mantis. And Phyla, and Adam, and Moondragon, and Jack Flag, and...pretty much all of the misfits from DnA's run.

Marvel should just buy ROM. I think the Parker Bros. own him and they'rre not onna do anything with him.

@ TheEpicJuiceBox

Marvel and Fox share the Skurlls (like Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch).

Hasbro and Universal Pictures will probably be knocking on James guns door some time in the future. lol

@Batmaniac I think Marvel does, but its kind of muddled. He was part of the Micronauts, but he was an original Marvel creation. So idk why he can't be used when he's been showing up for a long time in the comics. But I guess for media it's different.

Oh and Hasbro has the rights to Rom and the Micronauts. They have tried to launch them under Dark Horse but nothing can top the Marvel stuff.

now that the Director of GOTG expressed interest, the execs of whatever company that owns Micronauts and Rom will suddenly put them on their radar to produce

Bug is very complicated. Marvel actually created him and owns the comic rights, but they didn't own film rights for the Micronauts, so they could only use Bug in comics. However, since they created him, they retained his print rights. Takara corporation went out of business. Hasbro currently owns the toy and media rights to Micronauts. But do they own the toy rights to Bug? Do they own his film rights? No, not exactly. He's in a legal black hole that needs to be sorted out before ANYONE could use him.

History: ROM was conceived as a joint venture - toy plus a comic. The toy failed, the comic thrived. Yet the film rights are with Hasbro, the toy manufacturer, which [frick]ed up, while Marvel, the comics company that actually succeeded, doesn't have the ability to bring their creation to life on screen. That sucks.

I agree with you 100% on the Rom-Love, brother....I collected him off the stands from issue 10 as a kid and eventually got the entire run. Hands down one of the best Marvel series in their history. I prayed Marvel would have gotten his rights back, but...oh well.
