Orci And Kurtzman Discuss Star Trek 2 Setting And Villain

The Star Trek and ROTF(we are letting them away with that one!) writing team mentioned the new direction the Trek sequel will take, and although they don't come out and reveal the villain, they do, once again, name check a certain Shatner botherer from an earlier movie..KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!...

In a Q&A session in Beverly Hills, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman gave a few more hints about their take on a Trek sequel, and reveal it will have a villain as its main focus. On the setting for the story, Orci explained..

"We would never do a remake....it will be some time in the five-year mission. But that is a question. Should we pick them up immediately the next day or should it be later, we are still discussing that."

And Kurtzman says the villain will be hugely significant in the follow-up..

"I think our idea on this is that the first of any series is about them coming together or the formation. I couldn't really tell you what Jeff Bridges was doing in Iron Man, but it doesn't matter at all because it is all about Iron Man becoming Iron Man.

"Whereas I think sequels are very much about the villain. Because while [in the first one] the villain serves to bring the crew together, the second one I think has to be a true challenging of what that family is about. That is why Wrath of Khan was so amazing. Khan tested each one of them and ultimately asked for the ultimately sacrifice, and that is why that movie held up so well."

Apparently both writers are feeling the pressure of delivering a sequel that lives up to expectations after the very well received first movie. Orci said..

"Frankly I feel more pressure because we were so confident when we came up with the idea of how to bridge canon, and yet free ourselves from canon. Now we have no excuses for anything, now we are free. Now we don't have the benefit of low expectations."

As for dream projects, Kurtzman said: "I would like to take a run at Indiana Jones, but that is a pretty closed door, so not sure that is ever going to happen." Orci joked that they would like to remake Star Wars(lets not even joke about that one boys!)

Fans have been pretty divided over whether they want to see Khan(previously played by the late Ricardo Montalbán, he first appeared in the 1967 TV episode Space Seed and returned in the 1982 movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) return or go with a completely new character never seen in either the series or the movies. Personally I think that since its supposed to be a new time line that a new version of Khan would be great..although I do understand the desire to see something brand new too. What do you folks think?

I'm just hoping for something clever in the sequel - something that subtly (or not) shows the distinction between this timeline and the origin.

Failing that, a mirror verse film.

I'm with Soul - a 'mirror-universe' plot would be interesting to see...

As for Orci re-doing 'Star Wars', why not let him have a crack at the first threee (Episodes I-III)? Aside from the lightsaber duels, they pretty much blew! Plus, I don't think Orci would be stupid enough to bring back the annoying Jar-Jar Binks, no matter how hard Lucas wants to pimp the Star Wars merchandise!

I like what these guys have the potential to do, but thats just it. The only thing wrong with potential is it hasnt been done yet. And doesnt the fellow on the right of Ror's article avatar look like lloyd Christmas, I think so.
Keep them away from Star Wars, and keep them away from Kahn, Iv got a bad feeling about this.

As long as there's no humping dogs or farting robots I think it'll be fine.

As much as I would love to see Khan on the big screen again. lets see something new or something old that hasn't been used to its potential. Like the Gorn for instance.......

Its kinda EARLY for Khan....

They should save him for for Star Trek 3.

Use a Different for 2 and roll with KHAN for part 3.

Khan was a random character from a random episode of the original series until The Wrath of Khan (which ruled). We don't really need to see another Khan. I'll come back to this point.

We need to explore the changes in timeline. The Klingons lost a lot of warships in the last movie, during their battle with Nero. The Federation also lost a lot of ships. The events of the previous film should have lasting effects on the balance of power in the Federation. Who would come forward to take advantage of such an upheaval?

Other changes - Pike isn't marooned on a planet of illusions. Kirk probably doesn't have a son. Spock doesn't have as many Vulcans to influence him... would this lead to a larger acceptance of his human side? What kind of issues could this raise between he and Uhura once the Pon-Farr hits? For those of you who don't know, Pon-Farr is a sort of violent Vulcan puberty/mating thing that happens every seven years (or something).

Back to Khan - the point I was trying to make before is that, like Khan, ANY ancillary character from The Original Series can be made more interesting. I'm sure only the die-hard Trek fans knew the character Khan when Star Trek II hit theatres. And just because Khan was given a superb treatment on film in the 80's doesn't make him any more or less viable than any other potential antagonist for a new movie.

When we talk about Khan returning, we're talking about the desire to recapture our feelings of that particular movie (arguably the best Original Series film).

We shouldn't beg for reiteration of the classics. JJ Abrams did very well with his Star Trek movie and we should encourage him to stick to his own creativity instead of depending on old standards. Khan isn't Kirk's Joker, or Lex Luthor, or Magneto. When we talk about a sequel to The Dark Knight, we often talk about how tired we are of the same antagonists being seen in every Batman movie.

Let's see more Romulan activity. Let's see how the balance of power changes in the universe with Vulcan destroyed. And let's not forget that both the Federation and Klingon Empire lost a bunch of starships in battles with Nero.

Between The Original Series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Enterprise, there has to be something from which Abrams can find material (I left out Voyager because of the far-flung setting).

Or maybe we can simply count on JJ Abrams to do what he does best... create something exciting and new.

@sethasa Who would you consider Kirk's iconic antagonist?
I think Kahn was shown to be a fitting nemesis because of his signifigance in trek cannon which is not limited to simply movies or tv but is all together a rather congruent continuity. Kahn's signifigance and actions in that story impacted the next two movies where the consequences of Spock's death greatly defined many of the character relationships of the crew. There are many other characters and relationships to explore but minimilizing Kahn's signifigance is absurd. Seeds could be sown about Kahn in the next one and come to fruitition later on. I think that races such as the Q or the Borg that routinely entail time travel or reality altering would make a good vehicle for a Shatnertastic story and the Klingons should be running around straight killing and gunning for Romulans making the tension of an all out war tangible and forcing the Enterprise to get involved. There should be complete and total destruction, terrorism and genocide being unleased by the Klingons while the Romulans take a War to end all wars, Klingons are the axis of evil stance. There could be lots of other players like Cardassians and Ferengi subvertly trying to influence the outcome of an all out Klingon/Romulan War. Spock would have to deal with his hatred toward Romulans and Kirk over a hatred for Klingons which could stem from his first true love getting wacked by the Klingons, or something worse, a Klingon strike against earth because they think the Federation was the cause of Nero and Kirk's Mom and Iwoa get wiped out. There is a lot ways this could go that would reflect cannon, staying true to the characters, and yet be fresh and new.

@ROR

Great article!!!

@sethasa

Great comment!!!

I really could care less, on one hand i'm routing for Khan for the nostalgia, and on the other gimme something new! Either way, with how great the first film turned out, they'd have a tough time dropping the ball.

Just please, make it sooner rather than later =)

sethasa I agree, I think the next film should be about the balance of power. With the fedration and the klingon empire crippled I think the romulans are poised to strike.

Hey, if all else fails they could 'jump the shark' (throw the 'S'?) early and re-reintroduce the Borg - they DID try that in 'Enterprise', remember?

Those guys wrote a great script for Star Trek but they also wrote a scarily bad script for ROTF. But, in there defense, there is a lot more source material to draw from in the Star Trek franchise than Transformers. Plus, Michael Bay is a retard and probably didn't even bother reading any script before he started staging irrelevant fight scenes in Cairo.

Legendary:

Thanks for the question.

I wouldn't say Kirk has any over-reaching nemesis. The Star Trek franchise is driven by it's episodic nature. By virtue of that method, you cannot have such a character. If Kirk has any constant enemy through the entirety of the canon, it's the Klingons. He begins as a wartime Captain, regularly fighting Klingons. His son is later killed by Klingons. Toward the end of his life journey he helps to foster the peace treaty between the Klingons and the Federation and learns trust for them. I see the Klingon/Federation war as Kirk's story arc.

And I didn't intend to diminish Khan's impact or significance in THOSE stories. I intended to make the point that, with good creative writing, directing, and acting, ANY character can be every bit as 'loveable' or relevant as Khan, but for THESE stories. Khan certainly began a significant chain of events. But Khan was not tied to anything but the beginning of that chain, motivated by circumstances that have, now, never taken place. In the original series, Khan's ship was adrift - exiled after the Eugenics war. He rallied his genetically-enhanced crew and failed an attempt to take over the Enterprise. Kirk and the Enterprise crew left Khan on Ceti Alpha Five under a passable truce. Had Star Trek II not been made as it was, Khan would've been just another episode.

I agree with the remainder of your post. I think you anticipate the same kind of universal power war that I do. But I still don't want to see Khan, or the Borg, or Q.
