Marvel Studios Planning Power Pack, Dazzler, Ka-Zar Movies?

C.H.U.D have some exclusive info regarding projects from Marvel Studios featuring the much lesser known characters at much smaller budgets...

We already heard from various sources that we would most likely see teh likes of Dr Strange or Iron Fist make it to the movies at some stage, but now it seems that Marvel have started a whole new smaller movie initiative which could not only bring these guys to the screen much sooner than we thought, but even more obscure characters too.

This from C.H.U.D..

Marvel Studios is currently taking meetings with writers and directors to work on small scale movies based on some of their third tier characters. The movies would cost in the range of 20 to 40 million dollars (very small when we're talking studio films) and would allow them to take risks with less obvious characters and with interesting talent.

Filmmakers are being offered their pick of characters whose names are only familiar to comic fans. Properties like Dr. Strange, Ka-Zar, Luke Cage, Dazzler and Power Pack are among the many that are being tossed around right now. And the attitude seems to be that Marvel is open to bringing any of their characters to the screen at the right price point.

Ka-Zar? Dazzler? Why not! Clearly after the success of Kick-Ass, a very low budget film by Hollywood standards, Marvel have spotted a gold mine. I mean a Power Pack movie for example, costing over 100 million is a big risk, but costing 20 or so million, and with the seemingly ever increasing popularity of comic based properties has the potential to make big bucks. And smaller movies can tend to attract directors that know how to reign it in and focus more on the story and characters than the big effects sequences so we could be in for a treat. Of course, until any of these projects or indeed the initiative itself is confirmed we can only take C.H.U.D's word on the info, but this would seem like a very savvy studio move to me.

i remember something about this back when Disney first officially took over a few months back, so i tend to believe this.

i have a hard time believing that a Dr. Strange movie could be done right with that low of a budget though. and Dazzler??? Ka-Zar???? really?? there are much better characters to make a low budget movie of, other than Dazzler or Ka-Zar. Iron Fist anyone?? hell, Daredevil would probably excel with a low budget, also. (if marvel owned the rights that is.)

i just find it stupid as hell that out of all the characters Marvel has...Dazzler is who popped into their minds???

how about Nextwave?

DogsOfWar - 4/22/2010, 9:11 AM
Yeah, Dr. Strange would seem to need a mid level budget in the very least or it will come off like a SyFy movie. Ka-Zar could be interesting but it would be very tough to pull off effectively.

Luke Cage & Iron Fist are obvious choices. Does Marvel still have rights to Alpha Flight?

Makes sense to me. I would think the more popular characters they would want to save for larger budget films. Do we really want to see Iron Fist done in a low budget film? That being said...I don't want to see Dr. Strange in a low budget film. That is one character I would like to see a little more effort put into. Ka-Zar, Dazzler...have at 'em with the low budget.

CorndogBurglar - 4/22/2010, 9:14 AM
@ dogs

Alpha Flight would be cool!!!

they could make a very good, gritty Punisher movie with a low budget. that is, if Warzone didn't bury that franchise too far.

MarkCassidy - 4/22/2010, 9:14 AM
Alpha Flight would rule! It is a bit strange with the character..although I'm kinda a closet Power Pack fan so I would look forward to that:) But don't forget guys, low budget nowadays still means very high production values. Look at the likes of District 9, Kick-Ass..when they say low budget they just mean don't expect Transformers!..and who would bleedin want it!

CorndogBurglar - 4/22/2010, 9:15 AM
@ ranger

actually, i think a low budget Iron Fist movie would be perfect for his character. they could make it like an old school kung fu movie.

actually, i think thats EXACTLY the way they should go with it.

Although this is great news, I cant say that I'm in the least bit interested in seeing characters like Ka-Zar and Dazzler on the big screen! (although, I would most definitely go and see them if they were made!)

Spider-Woman, Ms. Marvel, Alpha Flight, Black Panther, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, The Inhumans, Doctor Strange and Captain Britain are all characters that I'd love to see come under this plan of Marvel's though..!

I think it'd be interesting to see a movie about the Savage Land.

I'm much more interested in a Dr. Strange film though. That should be top priority among the list. And as Ranger, CDB, and Dogs mentioned, low budget isn't the right way to go for some of these characters.

Ror, Power Pack + Pixar = EPIC!

Heroes for Hire would be best handled like this as well as Ka-Zar. Dr. Strange on a low budget would be horrid and unwatchable, like Thor with a 20 mil budget... imagine that...

This started back in Feb. I did an article that Disney was looking to make either big budget or low budget movies. No in between.

Will Disney's New Movie Plan Affect Our Heroes On Screen? http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/GulfCoastAvengers/news/?a=15280

It has obviously had an impact on Marvel movie plans.

No doubt Marvel could make a very good movie about any of their street level characters on a small budget but I don't think any of their laser farting, flying arround characters could be done any justice without pouring some more cash in to the films.

My three year old daughter and I read Power Pack every night before bed. I would love to take her to a Power Pack flick. (I know the non-parents are rolling their eyes.) There's nothing wrong with Marvel trying to expand the demographic as long as they keep producing quality stuff. Yes, Iron Fist and Luke Cage would make great lower budget films. Dr. Strange would need a bigger budget.

yeah, she had a semi-popular run back in the day, and they're actually coming out with a new mini-series for her soon.

i don't get it, she's so lame...

They had been meaning on making Power Pack for a while now. And Dr Strange and Luke Cage have been on the waiting list for God knows how long. I’m glad to hear that Marvel is expanding the movie universe though….always good to see new additions and I’m sure Marvel will do well with these properties. However I think they should tackle the more well known characters first like Doc Strange, Black Panther, Iron Fist, Luke Cage before they add on Ka-Zar and the Power Pack. But still I’m happy either way.

Dazzler kind of sucks though. Plus she's an X-Men character! Doesn't Fox own all of that? Apparently Marvel also has the rights to Cable aswell..but you can't really get away with these films without a mention of the X-Men.

I'm just waiting on LEEE coming in and supporting Alexander Skarsgard for Ka-Zar..which consisdering he has auditioned for both Thor and Cap has a very likley chance of getting the role. And I would actually like to see it...but he'd make a better Venom.

I think they should do Power Pack, but make it based on the comic where Power Pack and Spider-Man talk about being molested. Spider-Man reveals he was touched when he saves a young boy from his babysitter.

Awesome.

Very very cool! I can live with this. I like all these characters and I could see them turning into great movies! How about Spider-Woman? or Werewolf By Night? Maybe?

However I really hope something like this wouldn't subtract anything from other more important movies like Black Panther for instance. Or maybe a Marvel Studios treatment of a Silver Surfer.
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 4/22/2010, 10:02 AM
Dazzler was a strong character with the X Men but I have never been able to understand the appeal of her solo book that came before that.

It's just boring and cheesy.

So, instead of properly placing these characters within the Marvel Universe they were meant to inhabit, they end up as standalone movies unrelated other Marvel characters. Why does this make me think of DC's low budget "Steel"?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 4/22/2010, 10:22 AM
@ m2prod

no one said they wouldn't be part of the Marvel Movie-verse. only that they were making low budget movies of lesser characters. if its Marvel making them (which it is) i'm sure there will be mentions of other characters...

but why waste an appearance from someone like Captain America in a Dazzler movie?? lol

Kazar could be good. Could be. Its very different and offers alot of possibilities.

Dr. Strange = Alfonso Cuaron. Depp. At least $100MM to do it justice. They need to sell this as "adult Harry Potter in contemporary NYC." It could be AWESOME.

Cage & Iron Fist = Tarantino. Imagine Cage with a 70s afro and chain belt. $60-$80MM budget.

KaZar = could be cool, but take a lesson from 10,000 BC. Bad script, bad acting = bad movie.

Dazzler = Lifetime movie of the week. $5000 budget. Zzzzzz....

@ Saemus: Me too. After The Avengers, my first thought (other than a sequel for Avengers and Cap) Is Dr Strange and Black Panther
Unmasked
Unmasked - 4/22/2010, 10:42 AM
Wow. That's cool.

Though I always felt that Luke Cage and Doc Strange deserved a big budget.

It shouldn't be that hard to make a Luke Cage film, so I don't know why it's taking so long. His story is cool and a little different than the average hero. Also Blade really needs to come back. And Black Panther could be huge!
Faust1973
Faust1973 - 4/22/2010, 10:43 AM
I think Dazzler could be doable if they went the Ultimates route...that would appeal to the emo/goth/angsty teenage crowd...think of it...put upon alt kid is bullied, comes into her powers...uses to defend herself then realizes she can do more...would be perfect with a cameo of say, storm or Prof. X showing up at the end and offering to take her to the school...Powerpack would end up a kiddie movie along the lines of TMNT...and I really don't think Ka-Zar lends itself to a big screen treatment...it would be compared to any of a number of Tarzan movies...
Faust1973
Faust1973 - 4/22/2010, 10:53 AM
If anything, I would love a Black Panther, Moon Knight,Werewolf by Night, or Brother Voodoo movie...if they used Moon Knight, Werewolf, or Brother Voodoo, any one of them could act as a "prequel" to a Dr. Strange movie...(like they did with Elektra in the Daredevil movie...) they could even do something along the lines of a quasi-trilogy with each character serving as one part...say, the first movie would be Brother Voodoo...see how that fares, then pull in Moon Knight as the "second" part, THEN, bring in the climax with Strange as the "third"...kinda like what they're doing with the Avengers...only with B and C list characters...

Everyone seems to have skipped over this part:

"Filmmakers are being offered their pick of characters"

That is, it seems Marvel aren't saying "let's do a Dazzler movie", but rather that some film-maker has picked Dazzler out as a movie they'd like to do.

I think the distinction is important, because while I wouldn't want to see Marvel "push" a Dazzler movie on us over other characters I'd rather see, if a writer/director has a passion for it and really thinks they can do something, then why not? It has at least a reasonable chance of being halfway decent that way.

However, if they'd chosen Dazzler as one of their tentpole movies, then I'd probably be a little less reasonable. :)
