Valhalla Rising Director Would Love To Make Wonder Woman

Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn says he feels Wonder Woman is a movie he was "born to make"!...

You may have seen some or all of Refn's pictures. He has directed the Pusher series and Bronson and his latest Viking bloodbath Valhalla Rising is making big waves at the moment. In a BBC interview, Refn spoke about how if he was to ever turn his attention to more studio friendly fare, there is only one movie for him...

After Valhalla Rising I thought the most surprising thing for me would be to go to Los Angeles and do a studio movie. Coming from a movie where I had complete control — I also own the movie — and had complete, kind of like, accessibility around me, and then going to Hollywood and doing a film within the studio, which is very much the opposite, I thought could be a very interesting experience for me.

I guess one of the aims I am having, but at the very early stage, I always wanted to do Wonder Woman as a feature film…Well, I would say that Wonder Woman is probably something that, to me, would be not just a satisfaction, but almost a [catharsis], and I was born to make it.

The WW stuff is around 6:56.

Refn's next movie is Drive with Ryan Gosling and brings him a bit closer to what would be considered mainstream. Of course this doesn't mean anything for now, its just wishful thinking. But several directors have recently revealed in interviews that they have certain CBM dream projects and then turned out to be(however loosely) linked to the films. Samuel Bayer said he woulkd love to direct The Boys and it turned out he was in contention, and more recently Splice director Vinceno Natali spoke about a Swamp Thing film. Now as Brent's article from yesterday reveled, that movie would appear to be a no go..but after Natali's interest it shows that he had some knowledge of Joel Silver's plans for it. Either way, having seen Bronson and the clips for Valhalla, Refn would certainly be an outside of the box choice! But perhaps thats exactly what a film like Wonder Woman needs.

Check out the trailer for Valhalla Rising and tell me what you think..

That would be so great if this could happen. WW is IMO one the easiest DC characters to make the transition to the big screen. Especially if they lean heavily on the Greek mythology upon which her character is derived. Plus there are still legions of fans left over from the '70s TV show With Linda Carter who may be pulled into a well promoted WW picture. I also hope Linda Carter gets at least a cameo but I would really enjoy seeing her play Diana's Mother.

@yowsaman: No, BRIDGET REGAN = Wonder Woman!! ;)

@ROMACK: Exactly! But I'd like to see Lynda Carter have a cameo as Hera, seeing how my pick for Hyppolyta is Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Oh thats good! Perfect casting right there man! I love CZJ! She would be better than Carter because in the back of my mind I tought she (Carter) might be too old to play Hyppolyta....but Hera? Perfect!

Maybe that would be a good role for Gina Carano. Alot of people want to see her as WW but I say nay nay! Not until she has proven her acting skills more. How about HHH for Ares? I know he can't act for shite, but Ares is a warrior God and a barbarian! HHH speaks barbarian fluently. The big question is "Who would be the best Wonder Woman?"

I never saw Pusher but I hear its great. Bronson was weird but excellently made and yeah, Valhalla looks awesome too. A guy like this could really bring something special to WW. Because lets face it, in the wrong hands(in other words a studio bitch's hands) WW would be a joke.

@Romack Gina Carano is the embodiment of WW. She can walk, and talk WW... but, act... I dont know. Gina would deffinatly be the most awsome choice!! She has that confidence around other men actors like... yeah i could kick your ass... so what!

This Valhalla Rising reminds me a bit of the Varangians, vikings who travelled south and ended up being the bizantine emperor's guard. It looks good and I haven't heard anything of it before, I am going to look for more of it.

And here goes my two cents of opinion (not very valuable, but there it is anyway):

Gina Carano... I think I proposed her on this very site months ago as a possible candidate for WW, but she has the acting problem outside action sequences (which I would like to see they are filmed without cuts, by the way). Perhaps with acting lessons, lots of them, she could do it.

And Jessica Lowndes is the incarnation of Donna Troy, you are right. But if Donna Troy is the doppelganger/sister/clone of Wonder Woman, why can't she play both roles?

I'm very curious to hear his ideas for WW. His take on history is very skewed toward the plight of the pagans which is kind of funny and disconcerting at the same time.

If Carano proved some acting ability/skills, I'd say go for it!

He may also not be as closed-minded as to outright reject the idea. I share the same concerns for getting a non-actor for the role, but the deck is stacked against the odds of finding a woman that can just fill the basic requirements.

Convincing fighter.
Actor.
Looks.
Stature (build and height).

Didn't we have this discussion about WW just a couple of posts ago... LOL

I like Bridget Regan for sure...
I also like the super model i forgot her name ) who also has some acting behind her)
And i do like Gina Careno

Any of those three would be good picks... just need to make sure the acting it up to par...

ROR - the movie looks pretty good .. and this guy could possibly give WW the respect and movie she deserves

Well, while that may be true, its a big studio production and not his own personal film. They may insist on casting sessions for him to sift through. The studios love money. If they think they can put reins on him and keep him within their guidlines, then it could be done. He admits that that would be the case in the BBC vid.

Gina Carano is not really a actress she needs to really prove herself on film. i remember she was in Michael Jai White film Blood and Bone but it was a short scene.

Gina Carano might prove herself in Steven Soderbergh new film "Knockout" cause shes playing the lead role.

i think Amanda Righetti could play Wonder Woman
