COMICS: New 52 BATMAN/SUPERMAN Team-Up Series On The Way

DC will launch an ongoing series by writer Greg Pak and artist Jae Lee which will chronicle the "definitive story" of how the two heroes met in the New 52 universe. Read on for more details and check out some great artwork from Lee after the jump..

The last team up series for Bats and Supes was Superman/Batman from Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness back in 2003, but this time we'll get a fresh spin on things because this new series, Batman/Superman, will deal with the early days of the two iconic characters, and how they first crossed paths.

Says Greg Pak of coming up with a brand new origin story for the first meeting of Batman and Superman..

"We've been given the incredible opportunity to show these two icons meeting for the first time at this very early and raw stage in their careers. Neither one of them has ever heard of the other guy....What would your reaction be if you saw a guy running around in a bat costume in the dead of night attacking people for the first time? And what would your reaction be if you met an alien who could crush steel in his bare hands for the first time? These guys are going to have very different immediate impressions of each other than we're used to seeing with these characters...There's an element of danger to the book that I think is very real and very exciting."

Great! Hoping for some great Superman/Batman stories. I hope after they establish their relationship, they don't write them as being too antagonistic towards each other. Especially Batman, that approach was getting old and tired.

A year and a half later and they still can't keep their retconned retcons straight. Pathetic. But hey, give DiDio, Harras, Johns some more money...

Batman, superman, superman, batman.... Hey i have an idea, why not make All the new 52 titles a batman/(insert hero's name here) team up book. Looks like if you wanna sell, you gotta push the batman in. Maybe that way DC will get sales back from Marvel.

Hope it sticks with the continuity of the New 52 Justice League or we'll have 3 titles contradicting each other (the death of Pa Kent in Action Comics and Justice League are different, or maybe there set in different worlds and i missed that).

Eh. Yet another Superman/Batman "first meeting" story. Personally, I loved John Byrne's take on their first encounter, and the animated version was pretty solid, too... And as long as it washes Joe Kelly's misguided "cruise ship" meeting (an homage to their original first meeting from the fifties) from continuity (and my memory), I'm fine with it.

But I'm probably not going to buy it. Not with Jai Lee on art chores. His stuff is a little too stylized for me. Plus, I kinda got burned out on the whole "Superman/Batman" concept with the Jeph Loeb series and its increasingly inadequate litany of follow-up writers.

At this point, the novelty is dead for me. I love watching them in dialogue scenes together-- the characters have ALWAYS bounced off of each other really well-- but I just don't think it works dramatically when they team up anymore; either you end up with a story too dark and gritty for Superman, or one too bright and goofy for Batman. Let 'em be their own thing, is what I say-- don't force a team-up just because you know the book is going to sell.

(And for Christ's sake, Warner Bros., DO NOT put these two in a movie together by themselves. No good can come of it. A Justice League movie, maybe, if you have to [lord knows they're not going to leave him out of one], but a World's Finest movie would mean the end of both franchises. Creatively, anyway...)
