Bryan Singer Says Mark Millar Is "Not Involved" With X-MEN: DOFP

We know Millar has been charged with overseeing Fox's Marvel based movies and - apparently - bringing them together for some type of shared universe, but despite chiming in on elements of X-Men: DOFP in the past, the director of that movie claims he's never even spoken to him..

Last year 20th Century Fox announced that Mark Millar had signed up as a consultant for their Marvel comics adaptations - which of course includes Bryan Singer's follow up to Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days Of Future Past. We had assumed that Millar would be involved with this project, and the writer has even given us some details on what we can expect (teasing The Sentinels, Kitty Pryde etc) from the story, but while chatting to Bleeding Cool, Singer reveals that he hasn't (yet) had a single conversation with Millar about the movie.

"I’ve not spoken to Mark Millar at all. He’s not involved. I don’t know what his role is about. All I know is that I have my own specific beliefs about how to take this universe forward. I started with the first X-Men, then First Class and now I am combining them and I think it could go further than that and I have some ideas about that, so perhaps he should chat to me at some point."

I think that'd be a good idea yes! This isn't a good sign for those hoping X-Men: DOFP would be part of this shared Fox universe, although there is still time for them to collaborate of course, and it's entirely possible that Fox and Millar have spoken about it before Singer even signed on. Bleeding Cool reckon it's a possibility that this movie universe might "fork in two" , and this would certainly lend some credibility to the theory. Anyway, I'm sure we'll get a proper idea of the bigger picture soon enough.

Singer doesn't seem to care for Millar, and seemed like he was passive aggressively taking a shot at his role with Fox.

Millar obviously knows what's going on with some of the other projects, and was the first to reveal that Vaughn was producing the FF reboot..so maybe you're right. We'll see.

he can be consultant for Fox, not Singer, or Trank.
probably they are just showing him stuff, and ask his opinion.

Wahahahahaha...

Wha...wha..wha? Say it isn't so..More dis-organized shit from Fox....

Lets recap...

Millar is the Whedon of Foxs Marvel...sorta, well maybe..sorta kinda..lol

Wolverine will not be a sequel, well sorta, well yea because of Millar managing DOFP....

Millar is managing DOFP w/ Singer...well sorta, not..

Reminds me of the intro to Benny Hill..What parts of any of this does anyone thing a quality movie will emerge...

Love being completely right..

On the one hand, it seems like Miller was bullshitting. On the other hand, Singer seems a bit passive aggressive here. Both seem pretty believable, so perhaps both could be true?

No Fox lost the rights to Daredevil back in September 2012 I believe. And Fox has never had the rights to Punisher or Ghost Rider.

It seems like slowly but surely, this good vibe we all seemed to have about Fox getting their act together is starting to crack and fall apart. Only movie I'm still excited about it The Wolverine. My excitement level for DOFP has dropped significantly ever since Vaughn bailed. Only thing thats still keeping me excited for DOFP is all of the casting announcements. I'm just not sure that Singer will be able to deliver the goods

So Millar is "overseeing" the Fox CBM universe, but is not involved in The Wolverine OR in X-Men: DOFP..So what exactly is he overseeing?

I think Marvel has the rights to blade DD and The Punshier back..and Soiny I think has the Ghost Rider rights still.

I'm thinknig he is overseeing the Fantastic 4 reboot, a Silver Surfer movie that was rumored, a Namor movie which Foxs has the rights to through the FF deal.

Singer...defensive and sensitive? Nah! That'd be so unlike him!

I suspect Millar thought it best to let a project in production to continue without him to avoid stepping on toes or ruffling feathers...he is just a consultant, and if they (Singer) don't come to him, then he's got nothing to say.

Usually I'm the one who's against the idea of Marvel getting everything back, because I think it'd be too much for them to handle. But I think they may get Ghost Rider back soon. And I definitely think they should get the Fantastic Four back as well.

I sort of trust FOX with the X-Men. First Class was great, and is one of my top 10 CBMs, and I'm really looking forward to The Wolverine, which I think will be great. I thought X-Men and X2 were OK. X-Men 3 and Origins: Wolverine sucked. I'm apprehensive about DOFP if I'm honest... Would have much prefered a Matthew Vaughn directed sequel to First Class, rather than a movie attempting to tie First Class and the X-Men trilogy together via time travel. But I still think the X-Men will be OK at Fox for now.

Same with Spidey over at Sony. I loved TASM, it's one of my joint top 3 CBMs, along with Batman Begins and Watchmen. I think Sony can handle him pretty well, they've only had one major cock-up with the character in Spider-Man 3, but they seem to be back on track and doing better than ever, at least in my opinion. Plus, the fact that Marvel Studios were more or less ready to partner up with Sony on TASM, and incorporate him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Oscorp was meant to appear in the NY skyline in Avengers, and I think Stark Tower was meant to be in TASM) so I think Sony are fine with Spider-Man.

But Ghost Rider will more than likely revert since Sony don't have a clue about the character.

And I feel The F4 really need to revert. The F4 are pretty integral in the comic universe, and I can't imagine FOX ever getting them right. Plus, this news doesn't help.

I think jcameron has a point. I think he's being a bit harsh on the movies in the MCU, but he's right that we should want quality stand alone CBMs over lesser CBMs which are tied together in a universe.

Don't get me wrong, Marvel have done some great stuff. Iron Man is fantastic, one of my favourite CBMs. I think Captain America is incredibly underrated, but I think it should have been longer. I enjoyed Thor too, very unique way of telling a superhero story and great acting throughout. Avengers was entertaining, but also dragged in places (although I still love it as an entertaining, pure escapism popcorn movie).

But some Marvel films have also suffered. Incredible Hulk was a good idea, but poorly executed, and ended up being very forgettable. And Iron Man 2 was pretty shit, and it suffered because it was more focused on connecting to the MCU rather than being its own movie.

But if you put Marvel's best films against the best stand alone superhero movies... for example, Iron Man, Captain America and The Avengers vs Batman Begins, Watchmen and The Amazing Spider-Man... I know which three I'd prefer to watch.

Fox don't own Namor do they? Is it because he's a mutant or because he was revived in an FF comic?
TonyChu
TonyChu - 3/11/2013, 10:35 AM
@Acira I understand that but look at the Phase Two slate of movies and the talent behind them. Marvel are not just making these movies as fillers for The Avengers movies but are making great quality movies as well.

Again, not dissing Marvel, I love their cinematic universe idea, and I think what they've achieved is phenomenal and a true revolution in cinema (plus Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are two of my most anticipated movies of the year) but this 'shared universe' idea isn't the be all and end all of CBMs, and I think it can be quite harmful if used in films that don't need it.

The X-Men and F4 DON'T need to be a shared universe. Sony DOESN'T need to try and make a shared The Amazing Spider-Man universe. WB shouldn't even try to do a DC universe for like another decade. Quality story telling over 'shared universes' any day.

The shared universe, for the most part (apart from the two instances I mentioned before) has been an advantage to the stories of the MCU, because those films were crafted in that way (although TIHulk seemed very disjointed from the rest of those movies, and it seems RDJ cameos simply to force the connection, as if TIH wasn't planned as part of that universe initially). Shoehorning a shared universe concept into an already established solo universe will do nothing but damage the property (be it FOX's X-Men or WB's TDK trilogy or Sony and Spider-Man).

Of course we'd all love to see more of the Fox-men and the Foxy Four. But I have to question, does Fox even own the rights to these characters? Because if there has been an X-men movie or a Fantastic Four movie, I haven't seen it.

@TonyChu I agree. I liked all of the marvel films better than any fox film. They just suck! How can u f up as bad as they have and not think poorly of them. They don't have a clue what they are doing in the CBM world and it shows.
