Anthony Daniels Talks STAR WARS EPISODE VII; Will C-3PO Return?

Like all of the other previous cast members, Daniels isn't letting any cats completely out of the bag, but the actor - who played the golden droid in all six movies so far - does hint to Digital Spy that he might well be returning.

If there are any two characters that are almost certain to return for J.J. Abrams' Star Wars Episode VII I'd say it would be the droids, C-3PO and R-2D2. Both characters have been staples of the franchise right from the get-go in 1977's "A New Hope", so I can't imagine they will be left out of any future movies. But will the man who brought the protocol droid to life in the past be returning? While chatting to Digital Spy Daniels doesn't come right out and say it, but seems to hint that the phone has rang.

"Look, it's all very early days and I don't want to wear anybody out by speculating or letting you waste your energy by saying 'What do you think? I'm certainly not sitting by the phone, but it's always nice when it rings. Do you know what I mean? It never occurred to me that it would happen. Everybody's really happy that Disney have taken over the mantle. Kathy Kennedy is so well loved and she is carrying George Lucas's torch so much further."

R2 and C3PO better be back!

One of the original edicts Lucas gave about the saga -- way back, when ROTJ hadn't even come out yet -- was that the only characters who would appear in all 9 (or 12) movies were Threepio and Atroo. I remember my 7 yr old self being fascinated by that revelation, because it meant these two unassuming droids had a much more important part to play than even they themselves realized. That was when I realized how huge the story was going to be.

@monkeyballs3

True, some of what we finally got to see did suck. I am of the belief that the promise or the idea of a large saga was always more intriguing than actually seeing the rest of the story, which is why I think Lucas would have done better to only make Episode III, with Episodes I and II "lost to history" (ie. left to our imaginations). This would have given STAR WARS fans the best of both worlds -- a look at Vader's beginnings, while keeping alive endless speculation and imagination about Obi-Wan and Anakin's early adventures.

You can't have a Star Wars movie without C-3PO and R-2D2.

Makes a lot more sense to have em in these movies than it did to have them in the prequels. There was NO reason to put them in ep I-III.

Isn't Kenny Baker dead?

"Oh, he's not dead! Not yet anyway!"

Couldn't resist sneaking in an Ep4 Obi-wan quote.

Baker is not dead, but he is 80 years old now. I doubt he'll be climbing back into the R2 unit for a 2015 film.
