David S. Goyer On "Reinventing" Superman For MAN OF STEEL

In a recent interview, the writer discusses bringing a brand new take on Superman to the screen with Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel. Goyer says he hopes fans will embrace what is being done with the character in the same way they did for The Caped Crusader with Batman Begins..

While chatting to Fastcocreate.com about working on new Starz series Da Vinci’s Demons, David Goyer also spoke about the movie that has everyone here on CBM blue (and red) with anticipation, Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel. The writer acknowledges the fact that many fans feel very possessive about the character, and want to see him interpreted in the best possible way. “We’re very aware, in the case of Superman, many people have possessory feelings about him but then there have been a lot of different iterations", says Goyer. "It’s no small thing to say you’re going to do Superman; but which Superman? Which era are you going to adhere to? Which elements are you going to adhere to?" There is no doubt that most people felt that Bryan Singer stuck too closely to the previous incarnation of the character with Superman Returns, so Goyer tried to take things in a different direction -- much the same way as he and Christopher Nolan did with Batman Begins.

"We’re in the same place we were at with Batman Begins. If you think about Batman Begins, there had been these previous iterations of Batman, the TV show, the Burton films. We were trying to do something that’s different. We were going against the tide. The public perception of Superman comes largely from the Donner films. Superman’s been preserved in amber since something like 37 years ago, and for the general public, he hasn’t really shifted since. Anytime you do something different, shake up the orthodoxy, you risk offending people. Superman has been reinterpreted many times over the decades, and if he is going to remain a vibrant myth, he needs to continue to be reinterpreted. Hopefully, that’s what we’ve done and people will embrace it."

the only reason I am interested in this Superman is because it looks so different from the cheesy and boyscott version of Donner s movies.

His comments don't really say anything any fan with half-a-brain already knows anyway about the mythos of Superman, that and the obvious necessary risks of reinvention.

Not sure if I'm keen on the idea that the kryptonians are all genetically engineered and what not. Seems to pose a fair few questions such as where does this leave the extended superman family such as Kara.

Also, I admire their work on Batman mythology, it was just amazing and very subtle approach. So I think, even without kryptonite, their Superman will be fine.

Another brooding, loner movie. Lame.

"Bryan Singer stuck too closely to the previous incarnation of the character with Superman Returns"
Well that's because it was the previous incarnation.
Returns was the third installment of Donner's movies.
That's well established right? Or do some people not know that?

(I'm also totally up for flash, but I'd be happy if it were serious or goofy.)

@GuardianAngel

Very true. But Superman is not a brooding superhero. At least not the type we saw in Batman Begins.

We already won't see this version of Supes in a JLA because of the Nolan contingent. Please don't turn him to another Batman clone.

Just like Marvel's phase 2 is heading the Dark, and Gritty route you Marvelite hypocrite? Yeah that would be lame.

FYI

They are just making his story, and character relatable to the 21st century Einstein.

Uh oh, prepare for the old farts to come in here and say how much better Superman was in the old days and how they fear change. "Everything was better back in the day." Kind of bullshit. I open reinterpretation of a charactr as long as the original essence of the character is still there. I think the only film reinterpretation i would dislike would be if the Speed FOrce was taken away from the Flash film. however, superman needs a new look and style. Hell, he didnt start flying until the old cartoons came out. Same with Batman, he used a gun up until a certain point. Characters change over time people, get used to it!

LOL if you think Nolan invented the dark and gritty comic book movie. Maybe to a thirteen year old like you this is the case. But I remember The Crow and Blade.

I liked Donner's movies, they put a superhuman who could move the entire planet on his own strength into situations that made him feel human. This just seems like a Batman with super powers. I don't need my characters dark to believe they can feel human, that seems to be the popular opinion though.

I'm all for reinterpretation if it means moving the character out of the Silver Age. I'm not for reinterpretation if it means making Superman another brooding anti-hero. That's not what he's about or what makes him special and unique.
