STAR WARS EPISODE VII Targeting Summer 2015 Release; Another Movie Every Year After That

Some nice confirmation from CinemaCon here. Disney/Lucasfilm announced that J.J.Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII should be with us in the Summer of 2015, and we'll see another Star Wars flick every year moving forward!

We had heard rumors of multiple standalone Star Wars movies to go along with the new trilogy on many occasions, but today at CinemaCon in Las Vegas Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm announced that we will actually be getting a movie a year, after Star Wars: Episode VII hits in the Summer of 2015. We knew standalone movies were planned, but we didn't know that many were! It's a safe bet that most of the characters we've heard rumors about getting a spin-off actually are...and many more besides. This seems like a massive undertaking, and obviously they are counting on the first film in the new trilogy being a success first and foremost, but something tells me we won't have too much to worry about in that regard.

I would agree, but they're alternating with standalone movies.

If they have a different team, they essentially have 2 years to make each.

loving this news, three star wars films set after return of the jedi & the planned spin off movies.

clone wars has run its course, how many more stories need to be told during the clone wars? time to move on with a new animated show set after return of the jedi.

I don't get why so many people are stuck on the every-three-years trend. It's not necessary anymore. I was shocked the prequels stuck with it. Look at Harry Potter. It's completely unnecessary, unless you're just sticking to tradition for tradition's sake.

Screw it. Give us as many as you can, make that $4 billion back, and blow us away every summer. I have absolutely no problem with that. It's what I've wanted for 35 years!

I love Star Wars, but every [frick]ing year? it will get boring, every year, people will get tired of it! give it a 3, 4 years break for each movie, and do more than 3 new movies!

@ruadh makes a good point about Harry Potter. Heck, if Marvel can release multiple films every year, then why can't Disney release one SW movie every year?

Disney is altering the deal. Pray they don't alter it any further.

"Star Wars was an event man, it wasn't a serial movie being released every year, you had to wait."

You had to wait because it actually took 3 years to produce them back in the late 70's. Now it doesn't need to. And I'm sorry, but they were ALWAYS serials.

It makes perfect sense. And OF COURSE Disney wants to make money off of them. I didn't realize they spent $4 billion on this to just sit on it.

Timerider84 - 4/17/2013, 11:57 AM
They have to,the actors are waaaaaay too old to wait 3 years in between episodes to finish this trilogy, they can't wait, they might die. Disney knows this.

how much did disney buy lucasfilm for? i think it was four billion dollars, they want to see a return on that as soon as possible.

it'll probably be about four or five years before they start making a profit out of star wars.

I'm not a business person, so for all I knwo you're right. But of course the movies are a decent way to get a little scratch, but what will really make them their money back is what the movies are advertising for, the merch.

Yeah – it's just business, nothin' personal. Stop assuming that anyone at Disney cares anything about artistic merit. Sheeesh! I can't believe there are people who still take ownership of something that is merely a TINY piece of their collective childhood. Ridiculous! If Disney want's to drill it into the ground by hammering out one a year, then we should all say thank you very much, can I have some more!
It's just an iconic piece of cultural history for goodness sakes! Stop getting so worked up over nothing!

"@ruadh- Bullshit yes we do. Star Wars requires delicacy, especially if your giving it to a new director. Your not honoring the franchise at all by releasing it every year, your [frick]ing it up, not to mention you have Disney behind this as well which has a reputation with Star Wars nerds. This is a literal attempt to milk the shit out of the franchise."

...yes we do what? And what delicacy? Have you seen the movies? Yeah, I love them, but let's not pretend they're amazingly well crafted masterpieces. They're popcorn, and that's all they were ever intended to be. Lucas himself continued making the original trilogy just to make money, and essentially pay for Skywalker ranch (in part, as a way to let his wife edit at home and not have to go out anywhere).

Lucas himself milked the shit out of the franchise. When I was a kid, I had Vader on my underwear, bed sheets, shoes, etc. He admitted after makign the deal with Fox that he knew the merchandise was where the real money was, which is why he fought to retain those rights.

Disney isn't doing anything differently from Lucas, aside from putting it through their well oiled, and larger, production machine.

It's sweet that you see Star Wars in such a naive way, but maybe when you guys get older you see it more realistically.

People, this is a Star Wars film made by new talent every year.

Keyword: TALENT

Why do people assume this will suck? Disney hired the best for Episode 7.

This is fantastic news.

@sotojuiceman

"Star Wars was creative, unlike Potter and LOTR those were books adapted, so making a script basked on the book just requires you too add some what or entirely create a new story based on the concept idea of the novel. That's easier to have it all prepared since the franchise invested properly."

Have you ever written a screenplay? Adaptation or original? Adaptations are actually, to me, WAY harder to do than something original. I can write a 90 page first draft over a weekend, if I'm uninterrupted and really passionate about it. Adaptations take way, WAY longer. You have to research, you have to read the original material over and over and over and over, you have to truly find the characters' voices (rather than using your own creations), etc. I'm sorry, but to take a book and turn it into a successful film franchise is no small feat.

RyGor is soooooo right! None of us (on this movie site dedicated to comic book movie and other scifi/fantasy films) should respond when we hear news about future developments. There's really nothing for a site like this to talk about until the movie comes out. And EVEN then, after it's come out, what's the point of commenting . . . there's nothing, anyone, anywhere can do about it at that point. All discussion be reduced to surveys: A) i liked it, or B) I didn't like it. Man what a great site THAT would be.

Nah, I don't really waste my time bitching about movies. I read the articles about things I'm interested in, and skip the rest. I get excited about some movies, and don't pay attention to ones I don't care about.

So no, not even ME. I don't get a lot of free time these days, so what little I get I choose to focus on things I enjoy.

And I'm sorry, but I see ALL movies as needing what you refer to as "delicacy". Writing and producing movies takes a large chunk of time for those involved. I don't think anyone sets out to make a bad movie. They just sometimes produce something that doesn't connect with most people.

The people Disney is putting in charge of these films are completely capable, and talented. Maybe they've put out some things you didn't connect with, but that doesn't mean every single thing they make will be incredible. I was not a fan of THX-1138, and didn't really like American Graffiti. Does that mean I should have skipped that space opera film he made?

Meanwhile, no one is ever forcing you to see every single star wars film. If it's something that turns you off, then vote with your dollars. Don't see them. Stick to the saga sequels and move on.

I sincerely don't get the need to complain about movies at all. When I see a trailer for something I have no interest in, I won't even comment about it to my wife. I just want to talk about the ones that I was excited about.

You clearly have Star Wars on a pretty high pedestal, and I suspect nothing will really meet your expectations.

And I'm sorry, but I've known way too many people who tried and even more who wanted ME to write their script, to really believe "anyone can write a screenplay".

Nothing can hurt the integrity of Star Wars. If it survived the prequels, then it'll do just fine. You are entirely free to skip all the new movies and stick to the old laserdiscs of vhs copies or whatever it is you hold sacred.

Or, you can try to have a bit more of an open mind, and check out what is being done with the franchise by the same film makers you pointed out were inspired by the original in the first place.
