Shane Black has wanted to get a Doc Savage movie off the ground for years, and now thanks to the massive success of Iron Man 3 it seems he'll finally get his wish. The Wrap report that Sony Pictures Entertainment has closed its deal with the director to co-write and direct a brand new adaptation of the classic hero. Doc Savage "The Man Of Bronze" was originally created for American pulp magazines during the 1930s and 1940s but has since gone on to become something of a pop culture icon, appearing in various radio shows, comics and movies.

Here's a character biography courtesy of Wikipedia.

Doc Savage's real name was Clark Savage, Jr. He was a physician, surgeon, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, and, as revealed in The Polar Treasure, a musician. A team of scientists assembled by his father deliberately trained his mind and body to near-superhuman abilities almost from birth, giving him great strength and endurance, a photographic memory, a mastery of the martial arts, and vast knowledge of the sciences. Doc is also a master of disguise and an excellent imitator of voices. "He rights wrongs and punishes evildoers." Dent described the hero as a mix of Sherlock Holmes' deductive abilities, Tarzan's outstanding physical abilities, Craig Kennedy's scientific education, and Abraham Lincoln's goodness. Dent described Doc Savage as manifesting "Christliness." Doc's character and world-view is displayed in his oath, which goes as follows:

"Let me strive every moment of my life to make myself better and better, to the best of my ability, that all may profit by it. Let me think of the right and lend all my assistance to those who need it, with no regard for anything but justice. Let me take what comes with a smile, without loss of courage. Let me be considerate of my country, of my fellow citizens and my associates in everything I say and do. Let me do right to all, and wrong no man."

Black co-wrote the screenplay with Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry, with Neal H. Moritz producing with Ori Marmur through his Original Film banner.

@Brainiac3000: Sadly they don't anymore, along with the avenger and what was thought of the spirit but now that seems to be false.... Yeah. So Savage and Avenger are gone while DC still has the spirit as evidence of the spirit and rocketeer crossover.

Now onto this:
While the change with the mandarin has indeed left a bad taste in my mouth(Iron Man 3 is still good just the weakest of the three if you ask me), I say "HELLS YEAH!" to this as I've been waiting forever since I got into pulps in 2010.

I wonder if they'll call it 'Man of Bronze' because he has to earn his title as Doc Savage or some BS like that.

They called him the Man of Bronze because of his bronze skin tone. I remember seeing the George Pal movie when I was a kid, but it was played way too camp. It also promised a sequel at the end, like "James bond will return in Skyfall," but it never came to pass.
This could be great!

Now since we are digging back to the pulps we need a real Shadow movie. They did a great job with the look of the Shadow in the Alec Baldwin 90's movie, but it should have been more serious. I cringe whenever I think of their trying to defuse the bomb. Ian McKellan's talents were wasted in this movie.
There were parts of the movie when they got it right, but I would love a Shadow movie that was in the mold of the pulps and the DC comics from the early 70's with the noir-like stories written by Denny O'Neill and illustrated by Mike Kaluta.

YES!!! We need a character to breathe some moral life back into Hollyweird. It's not always about bewbs, explosions, and things of that sort. I for one will be happy to see a hero children can truly look up to like this in media. There are far to many negative influences out there...there just aren't enough positive ones. Doc Savage could change that.

Ignorant young pups... Doc Savage is awesome!

Think Cap, Indy and Stark all rolled into one guy.

The original film was a hoot, done very much in the style of the 60s' Batman TV series. Brilliant fun, looking forward to this.

Haters, get a clue and do some research or just move on.

I kinda wish Shane Black would do another Charly Baltimore movie... The Long Kiss Goodnight was just too awesome. Though I would still want Geena Davis to do it (though she probably wont)

Hate to brake it to you~ its the wrong director for what you're craving.

@ darth mauve~

Do not for one second you can possibly "educate" or "explain" this to me. This is what's so exasperating. Its not like I don't know who doc savage is!
How many doc novels have YOU read?
That's not the point. You can't go on and on about how great a character is and then call someone a hater when said character is handed off to a hack.
Sure- most people out there never heard of doc savage. Sure- shane black will make a crass slick commercial hype machine and it will make a lot of $ monery opening weekend. This will be labeled "success" and anyone objecting to CONTENT is labeled a "hater" by the obediant little zombies.

Think about it- you're minding your own business. Someone kicks in the door and wants to steal your tv and rape your kittens- you gonna sit back and allow that?
Sowhat happens when your assailant sayd to you:
"Don't be a hater"

Its not "hate" to love a thing and care for it. Its not "hate" to be protective of things that matter.
It IS however dispicable and amoral mindless to just follow along and be useful to the people bastardising anything you care about while smiling as you empty your wallet for the privilage of being exploited.

Then that is truly a sad thing. They should keep the true nature of this character, or just scrap the idea entirely.

Yeah right - because IM3 was successful! I could have directed IM3 and it would have opened to this huge box office. It was programmed to this huge box office opening week no matter what.

I’d actually eager to see if IM3 falls short of second week projections and beyond due to bad word of mouth. Then we’ll see how ‘successful’ Black is. Thanks for ruining a superhero Shane!

@JorL5150

Fella, I really admire and respect your passion but you might want to chill a little. All that agression, it's not good for you. You might pop a vein or something.

Besides it was the 'WTF is Doc Savage' and 'Don't care' comments I was addressing, not the hate on who is attached to direct.

Drama much? :)
