Entertainment Weekly Celebrates 75 Years Of SUPERMAN

This week's Entertainment Weekly cover highlights the changing faces of Superman from his debut in Action Comics, to his first tv incarnation in George Reeves, right up to Henry Cavill's Man Of Steel..though Brandon Routh gets the shaft! Check it out after the jump.

This looks like something Supes fans won't want to miss. Here's just a few of the highlights of the issue:

• Origin Story: We dive into the long, hard making of a hero with a look back at how Superman’s mythology evolved over the years. Find out how animation gave him the ability to fly, where his chrome-domed nemesis Lex Luthor first appeared, and how radio made Kryptonite his one and only weakness.

• Superman Returns director Bryan Singer on the “whimsical” tone of his attempted reboot of the hero — why “not everyone responded.”

• Man of Steel producer Christopher Nolan on the “science fiction-based” approach to retelling Superman’s origin as an alien invader saga.

• Cavill on how a lonely life as a boarding school student fueled his performance as Superman, the ultimate outsider.

Man Of Steel is out on Friday, and you can read my thoughts on it HERE.

Routh really should be here, but I guess the gap isn't really big enough between that version and the MOS version.

LMAO@THE ABSENCE OF ROUTH

WELLING WINS!

They shouldn't have talked to Bryan Singer about his "wimpsical" tone of "Returns". He tried to kill the king.

@MarkV Dude, the soundtrack is awesome! I've been listening to it a lot in my car and also in the Headphone X format. It might be Zimmer's best work. It's hard to believe that such epic and incredible music is part of a subpar movie - as the critics are describing it. Everything looked and felt great - are the critics biased against Snyder? There is still about a hundred and fifty more reviews to come in on RT, who knows what the final RT meter will look like.

scooby

Too masculine, too clear cut in it's portrayal of good vs. evil, too serious, too much action, too patriotic.

In other words it has "too much" of everything I love in a super hero film.

Another review from comic book site.

http://www.eyesskyward.com/redsun/?p=3041

I've just selected a bit.

'The question of “what is the best comic book movie?” is becoming increasingly difficult to answer. The genre is now large and varied enough to produce a number of candidates; old enough to allow for achievement within the context of an era; and diverse enough that direct comparisons feel inappropriate.

MAN OF STEEL has enough strengths and weaknesses to be entered into the debate. But one thing is for sure, it is the biggest superhero movie ever made, and perhaps the biggest action movie ever made. Zack Snyder has significantly narrowed the gap between the film maker’s camera and the artist’s pencils and the result is a relentless and astonishing spectacle the likes of which Superman fans have long been dreaming. Doubtless there will be some who will bemoan a Michael Bay-level of carnage, but for me it’s the first full realisation of what Superman could do.'

'MAN OF STEEL is the first superhero movie which can legitimately compete with the comics for scope. It FEELS like a comic book movie, throughout, with Goyer’s efficient flash back structure managing to provide the all familiar origin in an economic and entertaining way. Superhero action has simply never been this thrilling, and while it paints with too broad a brush in some of it’s (rare) quieter moments, Snyder had crafted a big movie, with big action and big heart.

Superman is back, and this time, I think he’s here to stay.'
