Mark Millar Talks (Vaguely) About Fox's Future X-MEN Movies

He doesn't name any more specific franchises or characters that might be on the studio's radar, but Millar does reveal that the plan is to build towards something big that has yet to be announced. Check out the video interview after the jump..

Collider nabbed Mark Millar for a one-on-one chat at SDCC last weekend and asked him about Kick-Ass 2 and his role as Fox's go to guy for their Marvel superhero franchises. Millar explains a little about what he's been doing for the studio, but says he can't get too specific because it all ties into some big announcement that may be as long as 2 years away. He says they've been looking at bringing on new talent (Millar was influential in Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow coming on board X-Force) and are currently talking to more directors -- but what would they be directing? Well, we don't get any specific names but Millar reckons Fox have at least 5-10 “gold franchises” on their hands. The relevant stuff comes in around 6:20.

Can't wait for The X-Force film. Go with Remender's line up, and use one of the stories from his run. Preferably the Apocalypse Solution.

@jollem

Yeah, that's probably what they're big event film will be, I think they're building to that... They'll have to rename it though because of Age of Ultron. But that's exactly what I was thinking, Sinister & Apocalypse for another Avengers style film w/ all the X-Men characters... What others recent X-family events could they adapt guys? Help me out here lol

If the FF reboot fails everything else gets scrapped. That's why FF is a big priority. Xmen is already established as the groundwork for something bigger but FF is key for Fox. ( they still suck though )

It's a shame though because all this talk and no mention of what I think is foxs prize bull. The Silver Surfer. [frick] it would be so much more insane have Marvel had his rights.

I do want to see how this Fantastic Four reboot goes. It will be a test to show if FOX can handle other properties.

@MP79 But The Wolverine wasn't really expected to set the box office on fire, but you are right about FOX giving up their rights if there films begin to decline.

If the returns on films stay at the level of First Class I'd say Fox gives the rights back within 10 years.

Fox doesn't have to sell the rights back, they expire if set amount of time goes by with no progress or film in production.

And if what I've read before is true Fox has to keep paying Marvel too. They get a cut so it isn't as if the rights are theirs clean

@MarvelPsycho79

The Wolverine Cost 120M$ to make and has made 141M$ Worldwide in its opening weekend. It's already a success.

The deal with Marvel is a movie at least in pre-production every 5-7 years (I think it depends on franchise). Even if they have flop after flop, as long as they keep making them they keep the franchise. Feige has said something about them having to be successful movies, but not one X-Men movie has failed to break even. Even Daredevil AND Elektra flopped and they still kept the rights until the 5 year window was up.

Ghost Rider was different because the studio gave up the rights due to the franchise name flatlining.

If I were the one working on the X-Force movie, I would go with the original version of the team, BUT completely de-Liefeld-ized and with a more coherent story.
