New Image Of Beorn And SPOILERS For THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

The tie-in annual has provided yet another promo image from the movie (Beorn in his bear form) as well as some hints and spoilers. There's nothing TOO major, but a few character details, plot points, and surprises are definitely teased.

As well as the below image of a very pissed of Beorn in bear form, TheOneRing.net have gleaned the following piece of information from The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Annual 2014. They're a mixture of spoilers, character/plot points and educated guesses based on the info provided in the book, but it's safe to say if you don't want to know anything else about the movie, best not to read on.

At Beorn’s hall by Mirkwood.

- The company is chased to Beorn’s house by Beorn himself (Beorn doesn’t like dwarves, but when he discovers they’re running from Azog he helps them instead).
- ‘Beorn is the last shape-shifter in the whole of Middle-earth. Most of his kind were killed by Azog, so when Beorn finds out that The Company are fleeing from Azog, he agrees to help them.’
- Beorn tells Gandalf that the rumours of ‘a great evil’ in Dol Guldur are true, which is what makes Gandalf decide to go there himself and leave Thorin & Company to face Mirkwood alone.

At the Halls of the Elven-king.

- Thranduil has ordered that his elves are not to leave the forest, and they’re not to have anything to do with any other race (especially the dwarves).
- When Thorin & co are captured, Thranduil guesses they’re going to the Lonely Mountain and will release the dwarves to go on their way, for a promise of a cut of the gold. But Thorin refuses, so he imprisons them.
- Legolas isn’t as set in his ways as his Dad.
- Tauriel is at odds with Thranduil and doesn’t understand, or agree with, his segregation. She’s ‘very headstrong’ and ‘doesn’t always follow orders’.
- Tauriel is ‘quite unlike other Elves’ and it’s hinted that she quite likes the dwarves (or is, at least, intrigued by them).
- The wood elves give chase through the forest when the dwarves escape in barrels, but don’t follow them out of the forest.
- Except for Tauriel, who does follow then to Lake-town (defying Thranduil) and Legolas who decides to follow Tauriel (because he’s ‘very protective of her’).
- Bilbo may get separated at some point in the escape.

Some events at Laketown.

- Bard discovers the dwarves as they wash up in their barrels (because he’s a ‘great hunter and often spends his time in the hills around the river leading from Mirkwood into the Long Lake’), and eventually decides to trust them and take them to Lake-town.
- Bard has three children: Bain, Sigrid and Tilda (which explains the ‘injured girl’ in the piece above and is possibly part of his motivation for helping the dwarves?)

Developments at Dol Guldur.

- Gandalf may do some of the following in Dol Guldur: unlock a gate; see things that aren’t really there/things appear other than they are; cast a spell making it look like there’s more than one of him; cast a protection spell; have to work out where to walk as there are trick stones that lead to traps.
- Lastly, there’s a suggestion that Smaug is also looking for the Arkenstone.

Beorn chases the group to his house, has a personal vendetta against Azog, Thranduil won't let any of his people leave the forest for some reason, Gandalf does REALLY cheesy and cliche' magic tricks that have no place in Tolkien's Middle-earth...and I thought the first movie was going to be the worst one. This just confirms that Peter Jackson has no idea what the hell he's doing. LOTR was good despite a huge amount of flaws because PJ had to edit out parts of the books. Now that he's actually making stuff up for the unnecessary Hobbit trilogy, it's beyond stupid. Forget TASM, TDKR, MOS, if you want to really talk about disappointments, the Hobbit should be at the top of the list.

Well...there are a couple noticeable changes from the book but I'm sure everyone will keep a level head about it and no one will freak out and damn the movie to Hollywood hell for eternity.

...oh wait.

Oh right I forgot, people can troll and whine about other movies as much as they want, but when there's a comment that expresses any amount of justified criticism about a sequel to a really lackluster movie, "better call him out!" I'm sure there's movies you were looking forward to that disappointed you, this happens to be mine. And as far as negative comments go, especially on this site, mine wasn't that far off the deep end at all.

^No there have been much worse. Especially considering all the hate over a certain casting. I actually liked the first movie and while there were a few embellishments I thought it stayed true to Tolkien's story (Hobbit plus appendices). I am disconcerted by the addition of Tauriel and the chessy magic. Gandalf surprisingly did as little as possible, so they (the people of middle earth) could learn to do it for themselves.

@r4dagast, ah the old "Why don't YOU make your own movie!" comeback. You can write a whole essay on why that little comment is completely irrelevant. So if I can't hate movies until I make my own, what gives you the right to enjoy them until you make your own movie? The sooner we get rid of that ridiculous comment, the better we'll be.

@Charlie2094, I have to disagree with you on that one. I'l admit Jackson absolutely struck gold with the LOTR movies, I'm not denying that. But to say he stayed true to the books is really misleading. I get that you have to change things from the books because not everything is able to work in a movie. I get that, I even enjoyed some of the changes in the LOTR movies. What bothers me is the UNNECESSARY and frankly, cliche' and cheesy changes that Jackson was compelled to make. The Hobbit isn't even close to being true to the book, and honestly neither are The Two Towers or Return of the King. The Fellowship of the Ring, in my opinion, is the best and truest adaptation of the books. Its just gone downhill from there.

I could get into everything I disliked about the Hobbit and show you the things that prove Jackson is sort of a hack, but I've done it all before in an editorial I wrote a while back. I'll just refer you to that if you ever have the time to read it: http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fantasy_movies/news/?a=71796

So far, the only part of The Hobbit I didn't like was the LotR bookending. It makes me know that they're trying to tell the audience that it's part of the same continuity, instead of just letting it play out and I think it will hurt the replay value when viewing it as the first part of the overall story. Especially for those who wish to watch everything in sequence later on. That being said, Peter Jackson remains as one of my favorite filmmakers alive today!

As for this film, I think that Beorn will likely be mostly in human form and save his true fury for the battle of the five armies in the final film. Which is how it should be anyway.

@HellsHammer, hey there's plenty worse things to be called haha. Honestly though, who better would know what Tolkien would/wouldn't approve of than his own son who finished many of Tolkien's unfinished stories? Christopher even loathes the LOTR movies though (not that I can completely blame him, however), I don't take it to that extreme.

@FoxForce5, I agree to an extent. To me, it seemed like they were trying their hardest to shoehorn old Middle-earth locations that we've already seen: "Hey, remember Weathertop from the 1st LOTR movie? Isn't it cool that we're showing it again??" This article didn't include it, but from the source, they mention a rumor that the next Hobbit movie might start out in Bree again. It's lazy, unnecessary, and annoying.

Also, even a lot of the character's actions are copied straight out of the LOTR trilogy. I get having Galadriel in the movie, but is it necessary for to have TWO telepathic conversations with Gandalf, interrupting Christopher Lee giving his lines? Or again with Gandalf using the moth to "summon" the Eagles? Or Gandalf going into "scary mode" at the beginning of the movie to shut the dwarves up while they were arguing? I'm ending my rant, but Jackson keeps relying on his previous success in LOTR instead of coming up with new, good ideas for the Hobbit.

Agree, its good, and the real potential lies in the second half of the book (the coming two films).

But it (the book) is still inferior to LOTR, imho.

Beorn is going to be ridiculawesome!!!!!!!! Cannot wait for the film!!!!!!

Also, the barrel sequence is going to be stunning, real water looks fantastic in HFR! And as for Smaug, I really hope he is a lot in the third act, I'm very curious at how they managed to make such a beast talk without having a human formed mouth.

@SauronsBANE1 - my first comment wasn't directed at you. But...now i'm not so sure. They could potentially stray so far from the books that hardcore fans like you and I get a little peeved, but being the hardcore fan that I am my gratitude for the inextricable attention to detail and love of the source material for the rest of the 98% of the movies outweighs any objection I have to the storyboards and character development of a film produced by a huge corporation with a lot of money at stake.

Also, I wouldn't describe anything PJ, Walsh, and Co. do as "lazy". They put more work into these films than you or I have into probably anything.

Oh and also the rumor about the scene at Bree? Well I haven't heard that before but that would be AWESOME. Why? Because I'm assuming that would be the scene from the appendices where Gandalf first bumps into Thorin by chance and they discuss Thrain's disappearance and make plans for a journey to reclaim the mountain. Essentially their happenstance meeting kicked off every event in LOTR and the Hobbit so yeah, as a fan of the books I'd love to see that.

I can see this being "the ultimate movie experience" for me or a tremendous letdown. I hope it's the latter. While the Hobbit is without a doubt my favorite book, I just did not have the same feeling of "Awe" I found having after viewing the three Lord of the Ring's movies. Here's hoping this story builds in a way that makes me feel better about "an unexpected party"
