According to Deadline, Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie will write and direct Star Blazers, a live-action adaptation of the 1970s anime TV series which was actually itself an American adaptation of the Japanese anime, Space Battleship Yamato I (1974), II (1978), and III (1980). It seems Skydance Productions are keen to hatch a new franchise from yet another take of humanities' struggle against alien invaders, who have all but annihilated Earth's population. McQuarrie, Josh Klein, David Ellison and Dana Goldberg will produce, and Shouji Nizhizaki and Paul Schwake will be exec producers.

Here is an overview of the three seasons of the anime courtesy of Wikipedia.

Star Blazers consists of three television seasons. Each is an English-language adaption of its Japanese Space Battleship Yamato counterpart. The Japanese saga, however, entails more than just these three TV seasons, and part of this missing portion of the saga occurs between Seasons Two and Three, during the movies Yamato: The New Voyage and Be Forever Yamato. In the first season, Earth is attacked by Gamilon, a distant planet. The radiation from Gamilon's planet bombs forces everyone on Earth underground. With no way to remove the radiation, all life on Earth will be wiped out in one year. The Earth then receives unexpected help from Queen Starsha of the planet Iscandar, who offers a device called "Cosmo DNA" which will remove the radiation. However, since Iscandar is 148,000 light years away, Starsha also sends plans for the experimental Wave Motion Engine that, when constructed, will aid whoever can travel to Iscandar. On Earth, a crew is recruited, headed by Captain Avatar, and an old sunken battleship (the Yamato) is transformed into a spaceship (the Argo), outfitted with the Wave Motion Engine, and sent to Iscandar. The second season is set one year after the Argo returns to Earth with the Cosmo DNA and Earth's ecosystem is restored. It now faces a new, dangerous enemy, the Comet Empire, led by Prince Zordar. Unlike Gamilon, which was seeking to capture Earth to colonize it, Zordar simply wants to conquer Earth and add it to his Empire. Desslok, the Gamilon leader, also joins forces with Zordar, mainly because he wants revenge on the Argo for having destroyed Gamilon. The series revolves around the Argo, now commanded by Deputy Captain Derek Wildstar, working with the Earth Defense Force to face Zordar. In the third season, the Argo is caught in the middle of a war between the Galmans (the re-formed Gamilon Empire) and the Bolar Federation. A stray missile fired during the war causes the sun's themonuclear reactions to go out of control. Unless it can be stopped, the sun will destroy the Earth in one year and the entire solar system in three. Derek Wildstar, now officially in command of the Argo, is charged to help find a new home for Earth's population.

Hell no, there was already an awesome adaptation in 2010, don´t need no whitewashing/dumbed down/Bayformian version of that anime.

@mitchell1
It was mediocre though.
Not that Hollywood can do a better job anyway.

I love how when we bring things to the US they get assaulted for changing it up. Every country does the same thing. Married With Children has been redone over 20 times in 20 different countries. Breaking Bad is being remade in Mexico and called Metastasis.
Spiderman has gone to japan and they remade the character to be japanese. Same with Spawn. the point is they change for the country. Or what about the Power Rangers?
The original creators win because they are still getting paid for the option and it introduces the story to a new audience.
I like Yamato, but I like Star Blazers too. I think the movie can be fine in both countries.
If successful, I would also like a Robotech movie as much as a Macross movie.

Its a win/win get over it

And for the record, America is still better at making a 2 hour movie. Both for the character development and the special effects than Japan.

Japanese narrative is a longer process. From their Noh plays to the long running Manga and Anime. Japan's strengths lie in the longer format such as series.

So an American made Yamato might actually be better anyway

Tevii - but you're underestimating the Internet's need to constantly bitch and moan about absolutely every single thing it possible can. Just sit back and laugh..works for me!

Tevii: you wouldn´t let Japan do a Captain America movie...

oh wait... :P

Well, you have a point. I do like the "Speed Racer" movie a lot, but still there´s some older animes i cringe over the "Macekre" process they suffered.

Well, we sure have sorted the men from the clueless young pups here. Not only did Yamato predate Star Wars but it also introduced the story arch idea twenty years before Babylon 5 supposedly did it first on TV. Simply put,it is one of the very best and most influential science fiction programs ever seen on television. And all things considered Star Blazers was a pretty decent adaptation as was the recent live action Yamato film. If this adaptation educates and earns the much needed long overdue respect long denied it then I'm all for it.

The Godfather of all animes !!! A bit of Star Trek, STar Wars, a great history and animations beyond the level of that time!!! Try to look/download just the original Japanese animation, "SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO", this is fricking awesome !!! The American version Star Blazers has a lots of cuts, and the dubbing are not so good.
Who has not seen this anime should see right now, even if just the american version!
The First 3 seasons are classic !!!

First English Language adaptation of an adult Japanese TV show to be taken seriously. What got me and others into the fandom back in 79. Probably will be lacking without the Matsumoto influence but am interested in seeing who will play Dessler
