The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug hits theaters this December.

After all the extra stuff they put into the 1st Hobbit film (goblin caves, storm giants, Radagast, etc.), I'm less excited for this than I was for the first movie. The writers that Peter Jackson uses seem to want to add all sorts of unnecessary things to the Tolkien books, but won't give any effort to fix any of the problems in the story, namely the dwarfs.

It would be nice to associate which was Oin, which was Gloin and see what his outfit/hair/combat moves looked like, since they spent so much effort on making each unique. Put Gloin in closeup, and have someone say, 'Hey Gloin! Give me a hand here!'. Not at all difficult.

@Retrofit

I disagree about the 48fps.. I watched it first at regular speed, and then second time at 48fps.. it took a bit of adjusting to my eyes, it first felt like everything was sped up in a weird way, but once I adjusted to it, I did enjoy it much more, mostly because the 3D felt right, and it removed the slight strobing effect that usually accompanies 3D. I didn't feel it affected the costumes or sets in the slightest.

But that's just my opinion, I'll be watching the next one in 48fps and not bother with the 24fps.

5 fps would make the film look fast when projected at 24 fps.

I saw 48 fps and it looked great in 3D once it got about 10 minutes in. It takes the eyes a while to adjust. They should show trailers or something in 48 fps before the film begins.

isn't more frames per second a good thing?

Palmerdale, um... the Stone Giants and the Goblin caves ARE in the book. I read the thing annually. Maybe you should too so you don't talk out your ass. The Goblin part pretty much happens EXACTLY as it does in the book while the Stone Giants are embellished a bit, but they're still there. As for Radagast, quit being a bitch. All they're really doing there is actually showcasing what Gandalf was doing after he parted ways with the group after meeting Beorn. You are ENTIRELY ALONE in your sentiments regarding this as I've yet to see even on internet forums some asswipe saying, "Man, I wish they wouldn't waste my time with the Necromancer." To the contrary, everyone is drooling at the mouth for it... except you I suppose.

@TheMyth -- yes, the stone giants are in the Hobbit. That doesn't warrant almost 5 minutes of screen time for what is essentially a metaphor. Likewise the goblin caves are in the book, but no where like a madcap subterranean roller coaster gone horribly wrong. Both were effects added for the 3D effects.

Radagast and the events at Dol Guldur were not in the Hobbit. They were in one of the many later publications and that story line was pieced together from multiple sources. It was unnecessary in the Hobbit (book) and equally unnecessary in the movie. And the rabbit sled was entirely fabricated for Silvester McCoy, who's claim to fame before Doctor Who was a comedy act where he stuffed ferrets into his pants.

And, in the movie, they haven't met Beorn yet (that happens in the next movie), so why were they explaining what Gandalf was doing out of sequence? Its a bit of fabricated film-making that tries to make an old story sound like a modern story. It was an unnecessary inclusion to Bilbo's story.
