The movie's leads feature on these first couple of character posters for Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic, and I guess we can expect some for the likes of Anthony Hopkins and Emma Watson soon enough too. Take a look after the jump.

NOAH is a close adaptation of the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark. In a world ravaged by human sin, Noah is given a divine mission: to build an Ark to save creation from the coming flood. The screenplay was written by Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel and revised by Academy Award®-nominated screenwriter John Logan (GLADIATOR, HUGO). Scott Franklin and Aronofsky of Protozoa Pictures, along with Mary Parent of Disruption Entertainment, will produce the film. The film will be executive produced by Ari Handel (BLACK SWAN), Arnon Milchan of New Regency and Chris Brigham (INCEPTION, ARGO).

Noah is directed by Darren Aronofsky, and stars Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Ray Winstone, Logan Lerman, Douglas Booth and Anthony Hopkins. It hits theaters March 28th, 2014.

There is supposed to be two of every creature on the ark.

In the Bible story, humans had become so corrupt that the only moral thing to do was wipe them out and start again with Noah (the last decent bloke left). Factual content aside, the moral logic of the story makes perfect sense to me.

They got part of the story wrong but yet partial right. It wasn't because of man's sin but also to wipe out a serious genetic problem. But most of you won't see it.

@Bravado – You’re getting really mad about something that never happened. If a "world ending flood" happened a few thousand years ago there would be evidence, lots of evidence, but there isn't because it didn't happen. The bible is many things, but factually correct is not one of them.

I like Crowe and Connelly and think this might be a pretty good movie, so I'll check it out when it hits Netflix.

It cracks me up- marvel makes movies anout Thor and people go looney with joy but aranofsky makes a Noah movie and they act like they're victims of the inquisition.

It's like - how many priests are molesting you RIGHT THIS SECOND that you're losing your shit over a movie.
Careful- Obama will blame a terror act on your response to a film that pissed you off.

"So you think that absolutely everyone on the planet nearly 4 000 thousand years ago was evil except for Mr. Noah?!"

What point are you trying to make exactly? For the sake of your argument you're postulating that the flood did happen but you're ignoring the reason given for why it was done (because ALL of humanity had gone bad). You can either reject it as a factual event or accept it, but to cherrypick parts of the story and ignore the internal moral logic of it is dishonest.

There aren't a lot of people who think Thor is real, but there used to be.

But everyone kvetching about Noah doesn't think HE is real either.

Hilarious to quote George Orwell as it is SECULAR statist ruling class making our society Orwellian

An often overlooked anecdote to the flood story is the tale of Noah's cousin Larry, who made a small fortune selling kayaks just outside the ark.

It is exasperating to see the intellectual laziness of the Noah movie haters-

There simply is NOT a single monolithic church /religion ruling our society. It doesn't exist .
The bible can be and has been and is inyerpereted in any number of ways shapes and forms

Opportunist politicians will use the bible/ faith to support whatever policy they want then pretend to be aghast when someone else does it for their policies
Fiscal conservatives and socialists
Social conservatives and liberals
White skinned brown skinned and otherwise
Literalists and metaphorical Gnostics
All and everyone either use the bible / church or ridicule it as needed

The Noah story isn't exactly about a bloodthirsty god smiting people- that at best is a gross oversimplification

In the narrative humanity had gotten SO bad from the influence of demonry and the demon-human hybrids that "goodness" was not tolerated
It's a world where Enoch was brought to heaven before death as they were coming to abuse and murder him
It's a world where even children were possessed and or cruel and evil
The whole time Noah and his sons were building the ark they were harassed and abused
Noah begged his contemporaries to repent and change their ways and he could only persuade his immediate family to be a person of virtue and character

Yahweh sees this and regrets making humans in the first place
AFTER the flood Yahweh himself repents of the action and pledges to never do it again

It isn't about Yahweh "wanting to kill millions" it's about yahwehs regret that he could only salvage Noah and his family

"The law, separate from religion, is the only thing that stands between the people and religious fanaticism and tyranny. Perish the thought that churches ever regain the power over people that they once had."

Wait, what? 99% of the law is derived from Judeo-Christian moral principles. Christendom was a shepherd for two thousand years, not a tyranny.

Ok

Fact 1) I'm an Aronofsky fan from way back. Ever since Pi.

Fact 2) I'm intrigued with the idea of modern Biblical epic films. Looking forward to the Ridley Scott/Christian Bale Moses film as well.

Fact 3) I love Jennifer Connelly. Probably more than I should.

Conclusion-

I WILL be there to see this movie. Even if it gets bad reviews.

Let ME say again-

I am agnostic and do not take the bible literally (though the books of Samuel and kings have some historical veracity )
So no, I don't think animals "sin" or that entire societies are in redeemable

But
That
Is
Not
The
Point

The story is not about god wanting to kill, but god wanting to SAVE but only having a few worth saving
The story is not about a world ruined by Yahweh but ruined by evil/ demonry and drastic action - with deep pain and regret on yahwehs part - to save a remnant

Of course an all powerful diety could be more clinical and selective - and at that rate could even remove free will.
But that is not the kind of story it is.

Maybe instead of feeling persecuted over a movie you don't even think is about a real thing you could study mythic archetypes and hero cycles and the cultural context where utnapishtim / zisusudra morphs into Noah of the bible.

I can assure you - this movie will not harm you unless you allow it to wound you emotionally

@blacknight

I will defer to Harold bloom on that one - historically it's been good and bad
There's slavery in the bible (usually depicted in a negative way as the Israelites were slaves) but while professed Christians at times practiced slavery the abolition movement was also started by Christians
In the American civil war slave states were predominately Christian but so was Abraham Lincoln

You would have at times tyrannical rule of the church or Rome or the "divine rule of kings" but the freedom seeking pilgrims were Christian as were many of the revolutionary founding fathers ( some were also diests and Thomas Paine was atheist)

I think you'd enjoy the books by Jonathon kirsch - he has written a few about the Hebrew bible and really brings out a lot of stuff Sunday school overlooks and the story of king David is a very lurid political and sexual drama

Check it out - its fascinating

I too am an agnostic. A proud and outspoken one. As to the Weinberg quote I simply can't agree that "Religion is an insult to human dignity.". I see it as a (probably) necessary, along with faith and belief, part of the evolution of the human psyche. My humble opinion of course. God help me if I'm wrong.
