Gary Oldman Reacts To GOTHAM Show; Has Advice For New Jim Gordon

The man who played Gordon in all three of Chris Nolan's Bat-flicks seemed a bit surprised that we'd be getting a tv series set in Gotham, not featuring Batman himself - but he also comments on Ben McKenzie's casting and offers some advice for the younger actor.

I don't think anyone will disagree that Ben McKenzie has some pretty big shoes to fill when he straps on the badge and gun to play Detective James Gordon in Fox's Gotham tv series. Gary Oldman did a superb job as the big screen Gordon in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and Access Hollywood caught up with the legendary actor to get his thoughts on McKenzie and the show in general. “I’m sure he’s going to be fabulous", Oldman told Access, before giving some very sound advice to his young successor. "Go back to the comic books. That’s what I did. There’s great stuff about Gordon. He had whole other life." But Oldman doesn't seem quite as enthused about the show itself, as Access discovered when they told him all about it. “A show without Batman?” he replied, with a "perplexed look on his face". Don't worry Gary, you're not alone in finding it a strange premise..although personally I think it's a great idea.

I want to bitch about anyone from this trilogy trying to give advice on the characters, but dammit, I can't deny that Oldman was a fantastic Gordon.

if they focus on developing all the villains background storyline it would work without batman IMHO

as long as there is no joker...he should be the red hood that's it...Batman turns him into the joker....if there is no batman there should be no joker

The only thing that would get me super excited and forget about all this random Batman Superman casting would be if Cranston played Gordon!

AND NO, THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL "CRANSTON SHOULD PLAY EVERYONE" FANCAST!

He would genuinely be great...and he should have gray hair since he'd be older than Bats and so no one confuses him with Walter White either...

WB PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

Gary Oldman is the single greatest Jim Gordon we have ever had. EVER. There's a reason they made him such a big part of the Dark Knight trilogy-- that guy just f%$#ing NAILED it!

Ben McKenzie is gonna have to pull of a MIRACLE to ever match Oldman's Gordon.

Oldman was the perfect casting of Commissioner Gordon imo. Will always think of him when Gordon is mentioned in any fashion.

They probably have some unique ideas for a Gotham show without Batman, got me interested. Just hope Fox does't screw up with episode orders like with Firefly, or cancel it early like everything else.

It's a show about a young Bruce Wayne and it's titled "Gotham"?

So, a Batman version of Smallville, basically?

Or perhaps this will be (or at least be the basis of) the DCCU Batman's origin story?

It's not very polite to call him Oldman! Please be respectful so that we can all be happy! His mustache looks like a cute fuzzy caterpillar!

I'm occasionally puzzled as to why they didn't just make this series based on Rucka and Brubaker's Gotham Central. But I still see potential in this series. Watching an alternate take on how Gotham was before a Batman is interesting, as well as getting to watch more McKenzie (who was great in Southland) and Logue on the small screen is a selling point alone for me.
