Samuel Anderson has joined the cast of Doctor Who as a recurring character in Series 8. He will Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill School where companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) also teaches. The actor had the following to say about being cast in the role of new male companion: "I was so excited to join Doctor Who I wanted to jump and click my heels, but I was scared I might not come down before filming started! It’s a quintessential part of British culture and I can’t believe I’m part of it. It’s an honour to be able to work alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and I can’t wait to show people how my character becomes involved with such a fantastic duo!" This marks the fourth time in Doctor Who history that someone from Coal Hill School has aided the time lord in his exploits. Anderson has also starred in The History Boys, Death in Paradise, Gavin & Stacey, Midsomer Murders and Bedlam.

In addition, Robert Goodman (Game of Thrones), Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch) and Pippa Bennett-Warner (Death in Paradise) will guest star in the upcoming series which is currently shooting in Cardiff and will debut on BBC One in late 2014.

Hopefully he won't just be a token character like Mickey. And, it would be nice if he had no romantic connection to Clara or the Doctor for a change...

Agreed. No romance with either of the two leads. Get your nookie elsewhere.

A female companion was getting tiresome anyways.

I hope he's more of a Harry Sullivan than a Mickey Smith. (Frick) Mickey.

Well, it makes sense. Clara had a big crush on the Doctor and now he looks like her dad.
So they need to give her a love interest I guess!

I never care for male companions as well as female ones. Rory annoyed the hell out of me.
As did Mickey.

I forgot about Harry Sullivan! Yea hopefully Capaldi's season will be as good as Baker's 1st!

You know... The... 4th one not the 6th one.

@Cherry

Because they were poorly written. Having two men as the main stars that simply exchange banter and are friends would be a welcome change.

Most of the time the male companions are stuck on the real companion which is a female. They are jealous of the Doctor and thus they become annoying and combative of the Doctor. If this guy is anything like Harry Sullivan, he's gonna be cool and a perhaps some muscle for the Doctor.

Rory annoyed the hell out of you? Mmmmm ok.

I could understand Mickey in the first season, sure. But Rory? What's going on here?

Rory was the Doctor's best companion. He was absolutely amazing. Hope this guy can live up to him.

I don't mind as long as Clara doesn't go. But I admit when there was Rory and Amy, I couldn't stand Rory, so, we'll see.

Though I felt sorry for Mickey, he had Rose for a girlfriend.
@CherryBomb
Rory annoyed you? Rory was my favourite companion of the revived series, he was the most developed. He came from that idiot in "the Eleventh Hour" to threatening Cybermen with a sword in "A Good man goes to War".

I just hope that this dude is awesome. Like Captain Jack. Companions are always cooler when they don't really need The Doctor.

I liked Rory just fine. It was his overbearing bitch of a wife and obnoxious Mary Sue daughter that put me off.

@Cherry Rory?!? Rory was great!! All of my friends who are Doctor Who fans like him and I love him too! You can have your own opinion of course, but I was just surprised!

He's not a companion, he's a recurring character, show has been a mess since Davies left and Moffat took over.

rory was the best male companion of the new series, Capt.Jack could have a case made for him. but this guy could be good, its nice to have another dude in the T.A.R.D.I.S.

Lol. This would make the FOURTH Companion to be a teacher from Coal Hill School. Sign me up for a teaching degree, I'm head to Coal Hill. :P

Actually I would love if this character was reminiscent of Ian Chesterton. He and Barbra each had something realistically to bring to the Tardis. Barbra history buff and Ian, a scientist that wound up becoming a gladiator and a knight. Plus he wasn't afraid to stand up to the Doctor.
