Are Benedict Cumberbatch & Gary Oldman Locked In For STAR WARS: EPISODE VII?

At this stage I know we're all fed up with constant rumors and would like some solid news - but, MarketSaw have been on the ball when it comes to Star Wars related scoops in the past, so their latest casting updates might be worth paying attention to..

MarketSaw (who actually broke the news that Lucasfilm had plans for the new Star Wars trilogy in the first place) are reporting on some casting updates for the J.J. Abrams directed flick, as well as providing some possible plot information. According to them not only are Ford, Hamill and Fisher locked in, but Billy Dee Williams (Lando), Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine) Anthony Daniels (C3PO) and Warwick Davies (Wicket) too. As for the new faces, they reckon that long rumored cast addition Benedict Cumberbatch is in, and so is Gary Oldman - who recently confirmed that he'd had some "conversations", but never really indicated if he would take them up on the offer or not. Here's the most interesting part:

"I believe Cumberbatch and Oldman were pursued for the same role. I don't know how that will work out with the script changes, but I'm told they are both involved."

So they were initially both being looked at for the same role, but are now both on board in different ones? It'll be very interesting to see how (and if) all of this shakes out. Also regarding Ford, MarketSaw reckon two more Indiana Jones features are "in the negotiation stages as per Ford's contract clause on Star Wars, which is the primary reason he didn't 'publicly' or 'privately' commit." The site also claim to have some plot details from the early version of the script, which may be retained in some form for the final movie.

"Ultimately it's about twins, and which will take a path towards darkness and which will follow in their father's footsteps, or at least that is what it used to be, that may come later as I think changes are being undertaken to bring the original cast into the forefront of the story leading to ramifications that lead up to the next generation of Skywalkers."

I hope Oldman gets it, but the plot details sound so... lame? I don't know, not digging it. I want something more than just some unfortunate guy falling beneath the Dark Side.

Yeah, exactly. Seeing a more older, wiser Jedi (Or what ever the protagonist is) would be interesting.

I'm getting a Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull vibe from this movie if the rumors of Luke Skywalker being the main character again is true.

Honestly, the only thing I really don't want this movie to do is take ideas from the EU. I dread that. I want everything to be 100% original.

Use the Skywalker/Solo grandkids as main focus, (original cast too old to have young kids). Have a second generation with boring dads... you know... Cool grandpas, boring dad, cool grandkids....

Greg Kinnear for a boring son of Luke

I hope one of them is Thrawn! And I hope the Solo twins are actually in it. Im not really a fan of the expanded universe but I do hope they take some of the characters from it

People complain about lack of official BvS stuff but at least that movie has a couple years to go. Star wars comes out next year and we don't have a title, cast, solid story details/direction, etc... Hopefully they announce some of that soon.

If so, he's rising to be the franchise King!

LOTR, STAR TREK, STAR WARS, Sherlock Holmes, all we need is for Marvel and/or DC to nab him up!

@Nick56 I agree, but I think its because it comes out in december of next year which is very close to 2016. I mean if its a huge hit it will probably still be in theatres right before MOS2 gets released.

Cumberbatch as Grand Admiral Thrawn, Oldman as Captain Palleon. That would be just about perfect.

I know that it might be unlikely, but who would be surprised if they actually are drawing from the Zahn novels, at least as a basis for characters. Best source material, right there.
