Is STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Already Filming...In Cairo?

We only have Jedi News' word on this for now (though they have been reliable in the past) but they cite a "solid source" as providing info that Star Wars: Episode VII is already filming in Cairo. They also claim that filming is expected to be take place at some point in Abu Dhabi. Last we heard, the movie was scheduled to begin production next month with a start date of May 14th and the location of Morocco rumored. Many speculated that that Morroco must be doubling for Tatooine, but of course the outskirts of Cairo would also make for an excellent desert planet. Until we hear any more on this we'll have to treat it as rumor, unless any of you intrepid CBMers fancy a trip to Egypt to try to snap some set pics?

I hope JJ is for real when it has come to him promising to keep things secretive on set.
I would actually love to not know anything until the first trailer hits.

I too would like to stay spoiler free with plot/character details, but with filming suppose to be begin in a month and not one cast member confirmed, that's a little too much IMO.

Some actual casting news would be nice, I mean we have movies in 2016 getting more comfirmed news than this! At least confirm the original cast members, god damn.

[frick]ing Disney and Lucasfilms acting like it would be a threat to national security if we know who's in the movie.

The amount of stupidity in this article is so damn high
First Cairo is not a desert at all.
this is Cairo

second the pic above is not even from cairo it's from Giza
do some research!

Archtect, I'm well aware that the pyramids and the sphinx are in Giza, but Giza is still considered to be a part of Cairo / Bahareya. ..at least by travel agents!

Nice to know there are other fans who know geography.
I though while reading the article: Cairo = Desert = Tatooine? BULL$HIT! Cairo is a modern city!

This article is garbage!

"The most famous Egyptian pyramids are those found at Giza, on the outskirts of Cairo."

Wouldn't it be safe to assume that they'd be filming in the nearby dessert for Star Wars? And not the actual city itself? Course it would.

I'd put money on a good portion of this film already being done. On set filming is almost arbitrary now.

I highly doubt this. To film in North Africa is dangerous, especially in Cairo, right now. When I was there, we had to travel with an armed escort and couldn't walk 50 feet without running into someone with an ak-47...and that was right before things got really bad. A few years ago, this would have made more sense...but now....I doubt it. I don't think Disney wants to be responsible for their crew members being blown up and/or shot at by extremists.

I remember back when they announced there plans in a interview with Kathleen Kennedy she said they were not going to be as secretive about the production of the movies as LucasArts has been in the past.

@architect92

Giza is basically Cairo. They stopped building the city about a 1/2 mile from the pyramids. Google earth it. They stopped development right at the Giza Pyramids. You could throw a rock at them from a high rise apartment.

Most likly it's background footage for chromo keyed or b-roll footage of landscape. Could also be test footage to see if they like the shots for potential filming locales.

There are probably people here who ONLY read movie news, and never read real news. Egypt is, next to Ukraine, Mexico, and Syria, NOT THE PLACE TO BE IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW. There's no way any major American film production is going to film ANY major American film in Egypt for the time being.

I smell a late April Fool's Joke here.
DrBrooklyn
DrBrooklyn - 4/5/2014, 1:28 PM
The lack of casting news thus far is baffling. Jesse Plemons took a role in a different movie filming around the same time as Episode 7 so he's not going to be in this. Besides Adam Driver we have no idea, and filming is 'supposedly' 5 weeks away despite reports saying filming has already begun.

They having to be filming scenes for Tatooine.

@Ror Lol! Give me money for the trip and I'll snap some set pics for you. ;)

I know when you're traveling through those areas, it's smart to say you're Canadian. Most people in the Middle East hate Americans, but they don't have a problem with Canadians.
