TRANSCENDENCE Writer To Pen BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Movie For Universal

Last we had heard, Bryan Singer was said to be interested in helming a "reimagining" of Battlestar Galactica, but now it seems that incarnation is gone, and a new version of the story is a go at Universal with Transcendence writer Jack Paglen on board.

Variety report that Universal are gearing up for a new movie version of the popular sci-fi franchise Battlestar Galactica. Transcendence writer Jack Paglen (who is also set to write the Prometheus sequel) has signed on to write what is apparently still a "complete reimagining of the story". The original BSG was a fairly kitschy Star Wars-lite 1978 series, but in 2003 SyFy produced a much more serious take, and that brilliant (well, arguably up until the finale) show ran for four seasons.

Back in 2009, Bryan Singer was said to be in line to direct this flick, but it's unclear if he is still involved. A "reimagining" suggests we won't be following the further adventures of William Adama, Starbuck and co., although I'd be very surprised in the Cylons didn't factor into the story. Production is due to begin this Fall, with Universal’s exec VP of production Scott Bernstein and director of development Jay Polidoro on board as producers.

With studios so starved for franchises, surprised this did not happen earlier, and for some reason still not have used Namor. If I was Universal, would be rearing to go with anything Namor on it

NO! That series is a work of art! You can't remake the statue of David or the Mona Lisa! Why is this somehow less sacred? It reconstructed and made-good an idea from the seventies but that doesnt mean you get to reboot it.

I thought BSG was pretty overrated, myself. The next to last episode was brilliant, though.

The (lame) finale, frankly, was predictable, in some form or other, ever since the show went on the air.

@rhinoman, a Namor movie would probably set a new record. For a movie bombing, that is. Seriously, I guarantee you go to a TWS showing, poll the people coming out of it, and 80-90% of them will either have no idea who Namor is, or will just have a vague notion of him being a different version of Aquaman. The only chance he would have of being a success at the box office would be to return to Marvel, somehow be introduced with the Avengers or in one of the solo movies with Cap or Iron Man, and have the character be popular enough in that film to be spun off into his own movie. No way he does well at a studio that could not connect him to other heroes.

Grew up with classic BSG and still love it to this day. The reimagined Ron Moore version not so much. I hope this much closer to the original.

I found the first season of the 2004 series extremely addictive and compelling, but the second season lost my interest quickly.

The 2004-whenever series was very good (mostly), but for me it got wearisome after awhile.

So I'd love to see a BSG film or trilogy of films that split the difference between the old, hokey-but-easy-to-watch 1970s content and the more recent show. Confining it to films (i.e. short running time) is a good idea.

Well this could be interesting. I not that long ago started watching the series on Netflix. It's been good so far. I'm on the second season. I really hope they don't kill off Dr. baltar. No matter what he did he's an interesting character. But the person I wish they would kill off is Starbuck. I have hated her from the very first episode. I feel the same way about the lady playing the president. But I know they kill off either. It funny watching Grace Park and seeing how young she's on that show. From watching Hawaii five-o I wish she had a bigger part in Battlestar.
