HBO Renews GAME OF THRONES For 2 More Seasons

Not exactly surprising news considering the season 4 premiere was HBO's most watched episode since the finale of The Sopranos, but just to ease all our minds the network has announced that we'll be getting (at least) another couple of seasons of the excellent fantasy series.

On Sunday night, the season 4 premiere of Game Of Thrones pulled in an average of 6.6 million viewers, making it HBO’s most-watched program since the finale of The Sopranos in 2007 (11.9 million viewers). That -- and the immense popularity of the first 3 seasons anyway -- means that we were probably always ging to see the show renewed for more; but now it's official: We'll be getting seasons 5 and 6, and considering the showrunners have said their aim was always to get to 7, that'll very likely happen too. Here's the press release.

LOS ANGELES, April 8, 2014 – HBO has renewed GAME OF THRONES for a fifth and sixth season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming.

“GAME OF THRONES is a phenomenon like no other,” noted Lombardo. “David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling.”

Based on the bestselling fantasy book series by George R.R. Martin, GAME OF THRONES is an epic story of treachery and nobility set on the continent of Westeros, where summers and winters can last years, and only the lust for power is eternal. The Emmy®- and Golden Globe-winning series launched its ten-episode fourth season Sunday, April 6 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO, with other episodes debuting subsequent Sundays at the same time.

Cast regulars for the fourth season of GAME OF THRONES include: Emmy® and Golden Globe winner Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Charles Dance, Aidan Gillen, Jack Gleeson, Kit Harington, Diana Rigg, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Alfie Allen, Jerome Flynn, Conleth Hill, John Bradley, Gwendoline Christie, Liam Cunningham, Stephen Dillane, Natalie Dormer, Iain Glen, Kristofer Hivju, Sibel Kekilli, Rose Leslie, Rory McCann, Michael McElhatton, Iwan Rheon and Carice van Houten.

@AnnoDomini
I wouldn't be surprised if they go in a totally different direction after finishing the fifth book material, and considering G.R.R.M's pace I'm not even sure 7 books are enough to properly finish the book saga.

I hope so @Anno. I mean, the showrunners are helping him finish the books

If Martins hasn't finished the series by season 7 then they should go there own way at this point it doesn't really matter they can't exactly adapt the books verbatim, and they've shown in the past that there more than willing to take liberties with the source material and that's perfectly fine. As long as the characters essential traits are kept intact and they have satisfying conclusions to there arcs I'm all good.

Well, not even all the events from the third book "A Storm of Swords" have taken place on the show yet. So I wouldn't worry about season 7. The events of book 7 would more likely pop up in an 8th or 9th season.

Aren't they wrapping it up after seven seasons anyway?

Also, before anyone points this out to me, I'm aware with them splitting books into a couple seasons etc, that there SHOULD be more than 7, but the producers said they're concluding it with seven.

They aren't going to fall into George RR Martin-itis.

You can essentially make book 4 and 5 in to one season, and by the looks of it there pulling some stuff from future books especially in regards to Bran this season. So no I don't think we'll get 2 seasons for one book any more. The structure for book 4 and 5 is just plain weird. Having a season with out certain (popular)characters just won't work on TV. It might not exactly be 7 seasons maybe one or two more.

"I might be wrong, but I believe seven seasons was just a rough plan, not sure if it's definite..."

Thanks! I can't remember what I read, but also I know HBO doesn't like their shows to go for TOO long.

"Martin better hurry up with books six and seven!!"

I actually completely expect the series to be at least on its penultimate season before the next book is even out, but I'm sure it'll wrap up before the books are close to done. Maybe Martin will just hang it up and let the show be it. Seems like the show is having an easier time of being more concise and focused.

Yeah speaking to an actress who has left the series, but returns in the books. She said she's not been invited back - so they'll follow Martins lead which they already know to wrap up in 7 possibly and well before he finishes with a much more elaborate ending.
