BOX OFFICE: TASM 2 Breaks Opening Day Records In Hong Kong

They sure do love Spidey in Hong Kong! Beating previous opening day record holder Spider-Man 3, Marc Webb's TASM sequel took in a whopping $1.23 million on May 1, the biggest first-day gross of all time in the territory.

The movie may have received a lukewarm reception from critics (it currently sits "rotten" with 56% on RT), but that hasn't stopped the public coming out in droves to support Sony's sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man. The latest report from THR reveals that the film has set a new opening day record in Hong Kong when it opened there yesterday, May 1st. The follow up to Marc Webb's Spidey reboot took HK$9.56 million ($1.23 million) -- the largest ever opening gross in the territory. This beats Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, which was the previous record holder, grossing HK$7.56 million on its opening day in 2007. Already sitting on $150 million overseas after two weeks of release, and with a predicted $95 million haul when it opens in North America this weekend, there seems to be no slowing down the webhead's second (well, 5th!) big-screen outing.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in mainland China on May 4th.

It'll earn between $750,000,000 and $900,000,000. Regardless of whether it deserves it or not the series has consistently hit between that range. TASM2 will do the same.

It's going to make a LOT of money but it's one of the worst CBM's this year for me. The cool stuff was really just Spidey in action but the story was super-rushed, the villain development was lacking and the motivations were just stupid.

I think their desire to cram in villains for future usage, especially the extremely disappointing Rhino, made the film feel forced and sometimes confusing.

They should have focused on Electro and build up Osborn to become the Goblin in another film because here it really just made no sense.

It's a shame, too. Definitely not nearly as good as Cap2.

56% on rottentomatoes. How do you screw up a Spider-Man movie 3 times in a row? I was going to see it, today, but now I have to wait till Sunday (long story).

of course cap 2 was superior in every way .....but spidey would've been excellent if not the so rushed story ....especially the rhino and the green goblin .....

Luminus...I wouldn't rush to see it.

I actually think they should take the Rhino out of promotional material.
He's really just a set up for another film.

It doesn't even make sense that he BECAME the Rhino in the first place.
It's literally like 'hey let's make that thug guy the Rhino'.

LOL...what?!
Luminus
Luminus - 5/2/2014, 4:13 AM
The Rhino's just a C-level villain, so it doesn't really matter. Like Shocker, Boomerang, Paste Pot Pete, Frogman... well, Frogman is D-level maybe even lower. lol.

@Luminus

It matters to me when they cram in so many villains at the detriment to the story itself.

Rhino is just one part of the very unfocused narrative of AS2.

I also don't mind a C-level villain when used properly in a film. The Rhino could have actually been awesome and the armor could have worked regardless of his villain status.

Even still...don't expect much from the A-level villains, they are also severely neglected. It's not just confined to The Rhino.

The acting and direction was good though and the special effects were fantastic but the story was not good.

There I said it. I'm going to see it again tonight, and maybe I'll change my mind... but for now - It's better.

[FRICK] ROTTEN TOMATOES!!!!!!!! Why can't people understand that? lol It was a good film (at least to me it was) 8/10 I think too many people are still clung onto The Winter Soldier they "think" they can't have fun with any other marvel related character. lol Go see the film and stop being so uptight. You're gonna place all your faith into a Reviewers Website when most of the people on there have different opinions about films regardless?? Come on now, let's be real. Smh, y'all missing out!

@TheBlackNerd: If someone who consistently has the same or similar views as I do about movies says this movie is crap, then yes, I take their review seriously. That's called logic. It doesn't mean I'll agree. It's just a "weather service," for lack of a better term.

@DoubleD - I think it is very common these days that fans walk into a cinema and has already decided to hate the movie.

I am not saying that it's everyone.. because it is certainly not.
But, yea

I'm more interested in what Spiderman fans have to say about the film. The RT score is something that I'll take notice of and then disregard (especially if I really want to see the film). Luminus called RT a "weather service" for cbms, that's about as good an explanation for it as anything else. How you respond to that "service" depends on where you stand between two points of philosophy:

"A brave man likes the feeling of nature on his face."

Or

"A wise man knows when to come in out of the rain."

@Luminus

Hey, if that's the case I see no problem at all. (Honestly) No one thinks "exactly" the same when it comes to movie experiences. I'm sure that there will be at least one thing you will disagree with based on that reviewers review after you've seen the film. But again, I can understand if you and a reviewer have similar perceptions when it comes to your film experiences.
