What is holding up the Wonder Woman Movie?

With the creation of DC Entertainment, many of us have asked ourselves what is going to happen to Wonder Woman's movie? What is it that makes this character so difficult to develop on screen? Here are some thoughts...
I hope I can find the correct words to say this, but I think there are a number of causes behind why we don't have a Wonder Woman movie in the making:

1-Diana is almost perfect: in the beginnings of comics, the characters were "marysue" characters; they always did the right thing, never lost a fight in their stories, and everyone was happy at the end of the issue, and Wonder Woman is no exception. But when Marvel appeared in scene, they made their greater contribution to our little world of comics: imperfect characters. Because of their vulnerabilities, they are easier to identificate with us, mere mortals, and they are easier to write, too. A character who always wins perfectly is very difficult to write without being ridiculous first, and keep the public attention secondly.

This, translated to the film aspect, is the need of a good script. This is no problem since there is a profession called "scriptwriter", although there are sometimes when even I doubt it. So the solution ids hire a good scriptwriter. The plot, after all, is already written.

2-She is a peace emissary: before I make my statement, please don't be frightened if it sounds quite cynic. Being a peace and truth and justice emissary/avatar may sound cool and great, besides, who does not love peace? Those who are dedicated to weaponry industry, the most powerful in the world (sadly). If people realize that waging war is very very wrong, either because of the film or by any other means, it's bad for business.

This is my main motivation to see this movie right made, as an allegate for peace between people, in a superheroic way. Besides, it's always enjoyable seeing the forces of evil defeated.

3-Wonder woman is a warrior: This isn't a problem, except for he who is a male chauvinist. I won't insist in this point.

4-Adequate actress: if Wonder Woman is so perfect, how can we hope to find an actress who can do her justice? the chosen should have, at least, three qualities: good performing, martial skills, and physical strenght and beauty. It is easy to find people with one or two of these fields of experience, but not three at a time.

Last few months, in this site we have proposed many people, we have made a poll... there are forum to discuss this matter specifically. So there are people who can do, if not a great job portaying Wonder Woman, at least a decent one. If all that fails, there always are acting and martial arts classes.

5-A movie is risky inversion: Wonder Woman is well-known in the USA, but not so much in the rest of the world, so making an epic film could suppose the ruin of the studio who makes it, if things go wrong. The whole crew, location, set construction and production costs could easily ascend to 100000000 €, and that's a lot of money, even without financial crisis.

¿Solutions? If the Real Madrid has had a 70 million € (source: http://www.as.com/futbol/articulo/santander-ha-concedido-madrid-credito/dasftb/20090211dasdasftb_1/Tes) then it's half the money the studio needs to do it right. Only with the US box office and merchandising the inversion should be recovered. And the rest of the world box office should provide substantial benefits, so Wonder Woman is profitable after all.

That's all for now. Coming soon in this topic some ideas of how this movie could be done.

You've hit the nail on the head Merinator.Gotta wait for GL to get things moving. Finding an actress isn't impossible, although a bit hard. I guess studios can find an actor that looks enough like her while having adequate acting skills. They can have her train and work out after that. And WW has her vulnerable moments (though not many) that can be translated on screen. Besides, If marvel can make A movie about an all powerful, near emotionless god from asgard, Then WB/DC can make Wonder Woman

they will wait for GL before they make any other movie

How many ways can you look at Wonder Woman?

Just one - a lame DC character with a rope and a 1940s swimsuit, who drives an invisible jet because her creators were to lazy to design one and the Justice League had already gone over the team's budget.

Justice League - "How are we gonna reach them in time"

Wonder Woman - "We can take my jet"

Justice League - "Where is it?"

Wonder Woman - "Well . . . its invisible"

Justice League - "Sure it is . . . I guess we just couldn't see it behind Aquaman's flying invisible sea-horse."
BLACKWINGS17 - 10/6/2009, 10:03 AM
I say NO to an INVISIBLE JET!!! ; D

And...

I say NO to BEYONCE!!! : D

merinator...Front page, niiiice. 2 thumbs up! very good points. The budget if there if they really want to do it. We both have tou touched on this subject many a times so ya know.

As far as Wonder Woman being lame. Please. It comics. You're are supposed to suspend belief. Fantasy hello. If Wonder Woman is lame... Then more so for Green Lantern. He only has a ring. Take that away and he is left with nothing but a green & black suit. Green Arrow the same without a bow and is left with some green tights.

The whole idea behind the invisible jet is ok yeah its in invisibile BUT its the TECHNOLOGY behind the jet that you have to consider. She has even more techo gear to make Batman jealous it being highly more advanced state of the art. HEr golden lasso, her bracelets tiara all stand for somthing, its symbolic and even if you take those away SHE IS STILL A WONDER. She still has her vast knowledge, her strenght though not to the degree if you take away her girdle, she still has her speed, power of flight, her skills in all forms of MMA.

She used to spar with Superman because she is the only one who can match her strengh and challenge her. Batman also sparred with WW so that HE could learn some Amazonian ways of fighting.

And her costume...really? That bothers people cuz Capt America all red, white and blue from his head to toes just tickels everyones fancy. Cuz Wolverine in the yellow and blue leotards really yells Mr. GQ.

teabag - 10/6/2009, 10:36 AM
Eh... I don't know what to think about all this.

They really do need to make a GOOD CBM about a girl super hero.
It doesn't have to be WW, but considering how classic she is it probably should be.
or maybe
Ghost movie anyone?
Or maybe Spider - Woman. Valkyrie? Ms Marvel? (featuring Silver Surfer and the real Big G of course)
Elektra or Catwoman reboot maybe?
She Hulk?

What I think is that there is a seriously untapped market there. Also, even though this has changed a lot the patriarchal nature of comics shouldn't limit the movies.

CorndogBurglar - 10/6/2009, 11:15 AM
Ghost would kick ass!!!
Shaman - 10/6/2009, 11:31 AM
What's holding up the movie is that Jeff Robinov is trying to protect his rep. After 'The Invasion', he publicly stated that Warner Bros. would no longer be producing any movies with female leads, because they don't do well. (Nah, couldn't be the fact that 'Invasion' was crap, and therefore his responsibility. Must be us finicky movie-goers.) So he gave us some "fantastic" male led casts like the ones in Speed Racer and Terminator: Salvation. Guys, I'm convinced that he's our boogey-man and the reason that Warner's can't get it's act together. Oh, and just to make matters worse, looks like ol' Jeff will be replacing Alan Horn in about fifteen months!

Minotauro - 10/6/2009, 12:13 PM
Actually the Jet thing pisses me off because in the comic she has the power of the god Hermes of speed and flight.
So she does not need or have an invisable jet in the comics and should not be in a movie. It was the biggest problem I had with the recent animated movie and kind of ruined it for me.
Dmon - 10/6/2009, 12:15 PM
Interesting Velox. I didn't know that Warner had actually anounced that.

I personally didn't hate Invasion as much as most people did but it seems insanely wrong to me to bar an entire gender from playing leads just because of one bad apple.
DarthMulder - 10/6/2009, 12:16 PM
In the Golden Age Wonder Woman couldn't fly, that's bcause there was an invisible plane, but after the Crisis on infinite Earths crossover, while telling her origin, each greek god gave her a gift, and Hermes granted her great speed and the power of flight. Later, the invisible plane was reintroduced, but after 130 issues (more or less).
Merinator - 10/6/2009, 12:23 PM
**** I HATED WONDER WOMAN THE ANIMATED MOVIE*** lets not even go there!

Wonder Woman has vehicles of every type at her disposal- the only element they have in common is that they are INVISIBLE. All these wheeled, flying, or submerging vehicles are different aspects of the same miraculous machine. The super advanced technology came from an alien world and is capable of transforming into any vehicle Wonder Woman wishes for, whether she chooses to travel in an invisible jet, a deep-sea submersible, wonder-cylce or a horse drawn battle chariot. She also used the jet more for transport of other superheros who couldnt fly.

The Lansanarians were mankinds oldest ancestors of 40,000 years ago. After gaining the Lansanarians technology Diana learned that it was part of an extraterrestrial artifact called The Ring. Together with Hercules, in his guise of Champion, Wonder Woman saved Lansinar & Earth from disaster. In their gratitude they gave the amazing artifact to WonderWoman that would become her invisible jet. This technology even briefly adapted itself to become the WonderDome, Diana's floating base, above Gateway City. Winged Chariots could be detached from the Dome's superstructure to convey visitors back & forth to the Themyscirian-insprired structure.

The Invisible Jet harnesses graviton particles-electrically-neutral, gravity-defying quantom particles- for subsonic propulsion through air and space. If stranded in orbit, the jet can reprocess Diana's breath for up to 2 hours of breathable air.

@DarthMulder: This is Matt Brady's Newsarama post from October two years ago. Judging by the timeline, it was just a couple of months after the release and crash of 'The invasion'. Not exactly a press release from the studio, but with three different sources and independent confirmation it seems like pretty solid information:

NO MORE WB FILMS WITH FEMALE LEADS?
Fans who’ve been watching the rise and fall and rise and fall of the possible, potential, probable, not likely, maybe happening, probably not, but then again maybe Wonder Woman movie at Warner Bros. may have new reason to despair.

According to LA Weekly’s Nikki Finke, Warner's isn’t interested in making films with female leads. Her source? Warner Bros president of production Jeff Robinov who Finke quotes (through three sources) as saying: "We are no longer doing movies with women in the lead." Finke said that Robinov's sentiment/statement was confirmed by three producers.

Finke takes the broader (no pun intended) view of the alleged new “direction” for Warners, even going so far as to getting a response from Gloria Allred, comic fans will clearly see the writing on the wall for the beleaguered Wonder Woman movie that the studio had been trying to get off the ground for years now, most notably, with Joss Whedon at the helm (he signed on in March of 2005), until he left the project in February of this year. At last report, Producer Joel Silver was “struggling” with the Wonder Woman movie, and the studio had purchased another script for a possible Wonder Woman movie around the time Whedon left.

Most recently, of course, Jessica Biel’s name was bantered about as a possible Wonder Woman in the upcoming Justice League of America film, which was/is, reportedly, to be the launching pad for several solo hero film franchises, including Wonder Woman.

As Finke points out, Waren Bros. films with female leads have underperformed in the market of late, but that, Finke said, is something that has many factors, and is not solely due to the female leads.

LEE- I know! Children in AFRICA know who Wonder Woman is!
Look, at this point, let's just CGI Lynda's Head to a martial artist's body!!! J/K Although I would watch it! I'm telling you, if they let George Perez and/or Phil Jimenez work on the film, it would help GREATLY! I think it's hard for people to grasp because they keep thinking of the TV show. It was the 70's people! You can't name too many things back then that people today wouldn't consider cheesy and dated! She doesn't need the plane in the first movie at least because she can FLY. Like Dmon said...that's what made the animated movie suck! She needs to be shown lifting an ocean liner, or something comparable, moving so fast she's a blurry streak of color, and FLYING! She needs to be doing Superman-level stuff to really get everyone's attention and show what WE know she can do!!! One thing though K.I.R. She retains all of her powers even if she's totally nude. They removed the girdle weakness some time ago......In any event, there's no reason why this movie cannot be made!!!
davidcub - 10/6/2009, 12:51 PM
And all that is 40,000 years ago technology... Still, I prefer the WW version where she only relies on her powers and ancient knowledge, it's a bettter metaphor of the old wisdom trying to save Mankind from amoral use of modern science.
Merinator - 10/6/2009, 12:54 PM
When I said that Wonder woman is little known outside the USA, honestly, I should have said less popular. My fault, sorry. Even so, in my city only one person who wasn't a comic fan knew who was wonder woman.
Merinator - 10/6/2009, 12:59 PM
david: "They removed the girdle weakness some time ago" good! i always felt that was stupid since BEFORE she got the belt she had more strength than Hercules.

Definitely NO REASON why it cant be made.

I think Warners will change their minds if GL performs well and they see how popular Black Widow in IM may be! It can all turn around in a moment!

And saying that WW is too perfect for any actor to play is silly! There are a number of women who fit Wonder Woman's characteristics!

I think Serinda Swan could be a good candidate for Wonder Woman she's 5'7" tall and looks the part. She models and is an actress. She played Zatanna in Smallville in the episode "Hex"

This is the worst article I have ever read on this site. I want to break it down sentence by sentence to explain why it's so horrible, but I don't think there are enough hours left in the day to do so... either the author's native tongue is not English or he is mentally challenged.

Here's Serinda Swan...check out between 2:10-2:14, it's a great shot of her and I can see Wonder Woman. With some more acting lessons and some physical training, she could be the one. She's 5' 7", and with boots/lifts, could be a close 6' tall.

The problem with why WW hasn't been made yet all lies with DC/Warner Bros.. It's not the casting.. inviso jet.. It's all DC/Warner Bros.. Seeing all the great actresses the posters here have mentioned and posted pics of how could casting be the issue? So far there's about 3 or 4 women who's photos are posted in here who'd be GREAT as WW. And like I've said before to a few friends of mine.. "If Halle B (Catwoman- D) If Jennifer Garner (Electra - C-) IF Helen Slater (Supergirl - D) can have movies then a WW movie could've been done already.. Sigourney Weaver's Ripley character in the ALIEN movies showed a female lead could generate TONS of cash and fans.. The article produced here is "ok".. But IMO the points aren't totally correct.
SUPASEGO - 10/8/2009, 10:05 AM

There have been many changes since then in the DC Comics Universe. While it is true that their heroes were less realistically portrayed than Marvel Comics characters decades ago, a lot has changed since then.
Diana the Wonder Woman is an Icon. An Archetype in a way that Marvel Heroines could never be.

The Wasp? Invisible Woman? Black Cat?

Many would ask "Who are they?".

Mention Wonder Woman, Supergirl and Batgirl and you get a different reaction.
I'm not knocking Marvel heroines, just stating a fact.
But I get frustrated when hollywood types say that if no one wants to watch an "Elektra" movie, why should they want to watch a Wonder Woman movie? Then they conclude that it's because "female heroes don't sell".

Not true. ELektra does not sell. Patience Phillips as Catwoman does not sell.

Wonder Woman is in a league all her own. She is the one character that even non-fans actually clamor for.
Wonder Woman is well known the world over.

Marvel heroines are more realistic but are less iconic. Their appeal is different.

Wonder Woman they say is 'too perfect'. Well so is Superman but we don't see a lot of hollywood types making the same excuses. Producer Douglas Cramer in the 70's didn't make excuses about how Wonder Woman is
"too perfect therefore too hard to develop as a live action feature." He JUST DID IT. He loves the character, UNDERSTANDS what she's all about and therefore respected her lore/source material, and just DID IT.

*****They said the same thing in the 70's BEFORE they found Lynda Carter. Yet there she was. I am sure there's someone out there who fits the part. The producers just need to actively seek her. Not just theorize about it.

And no, I don't think Megan Fox is Wonder Woman material. Nice face but small stature and not classy enough. She's much better off seducing Robots.

5-A movie is risky inversion: Wonder Woman is well-known in the USA, but not so much in the rest of the world.

****Well, not true. WONDER WOMAN is well known all over the world. Japan, Philippines, Chinese territories, Europe, North and SOuth AMerica.

What is risky is making movies like Elektra because she is not in demand the way Wonder Woman is.

That's all for now. Coming soon in this topic some ideas of how this movie could be done.

Every "somebody/actor" was once a "nobody". Where would all the fans who love and can't wait for their heroes to portray our fantasies and dreams be if every time a "nobody" let negativity stand in their way? That is what makes the world go around, it is what the world is made of, people who persevered and endured and became a "somebody!
