Who is DEADPOOL?
DEADPOOL is Wade Wilson. A former Weapon X program experiment, with fast healing powers but due to cancer is not able to totally fix his scarred face and body . He is insane but an expert swordsman and marksman who uses his skills as a mercenary. He knows that he is a comicbook character, and has that penchant of talking directly to comicbook readers. And he talks non-stop earning him the title The "Merc With A Mouth".

DEADPOOL was created by artist Rob Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza, and first appeared in The New Mutants #98 (Feb. 1991).

What are his powers and abilities?
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

Regenerative Healing Factor: DEADPOOL possesses a superhuman healing factor derived from that of the mutant Wolverine that allows him to regenerate damaged or destroyed bodily tissue with far greater speed and efficiency than an ordinary human. DEADPOOL is able to heal injuries such as slashes, puncture wounds, bullet wounds, and severe burns within moments. His healing factor is significantly more powerful than Wolverines as he can regrow missing limbs and organs and has survived blades through his brain on several occasions. His head or any other limb can be reattached using this ability, but has to be placed in the proper place.

Foreign Chemical Resistance: DEADPOOL's body is highly resistant to most drugs and toxins. For example, it is extremely difficult, though not impossible, for him to become intoxicated.

Disease Immunity: The unique regenerative qualities of DEADPOOL's healing factor also extends to his Immune System, rendering him immune to the effects of all known diseases and infections.

Extended Longevity: DEADPOOL's healing factor provides him with an extended lifespan by slowing the effects of the aging process to an unknown degree.

Telepathic Immunity: The healing factor causes his brain cells to be in a constant state of flux and regeneration, rendering him immune to psychics.

Peak human Strength: DEADPOOL possesses great, though not unnatural, physical strength. However, he does have at least the strength of an Olympic level weightlifter. He is capable of lifting at least 420 lbs but no more than 800 lbs.

Superhuman Stamina: DEADPOOL's musculature generates considerably less fatigue toxins than the muscles of an ordinary human being, granting him superhuman levels of stamina in all physical activities. He can physically exert himself at peak capacity for several days fatigue begins to impair him.

Superhuman Agility: DEADPOOL's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of even the finest human athlete.

Superhuman Reflexes: His reflexes are similarly enhanced, superior to those of even the finest human athlete.

What are the changes he underwent?
Early appearances:
DEADPOOL made his first appearance in the pages of New Mutants #98 published in February 1991. A big portion of DEADPOOL's design is based on a DC comicbook character, Deathstroke. The relationship between the two characters are strengthened by their real names, DEADPOOL is Wade Wilson while Deathstroke is Slade Wilson.

DEADPOOL and Deathstroke side-by-side:

In his first appearance, DEADPOOL was hired to attack the New Mutants. After subsequently appearing in X-Force as a recurring character, DEADPOOL began making guest appearances in various different Marvel Comics titles such as the Avengers, Daredevil, and Heroes For Hire.

It's clear in his first appearance that he also borrowed some elements from SPIDER-MAN. (From spidey poses, SPIDER-MAN costume design as well as the wallcrawler's wisecracks).

Mini-Series:
In 1993 DEADPOOL received his own mini-series, entitled The Circle Chase, it was a relative success, which openned up for another mini-series.
Circle Chase:

Sins of the Past

DEADPOOL is the quintessential comicsbook character of the 90s. With all the unnecessary straps, belts and pouches adorned all over his body.

On-Going series
In 1997, DEADPOOL was given his own ongoing title. DEADPOOL became an action comedy parody of the cosmic drama, antihero-heavy comics of the time. The ongoing series gained cult popularity for its unorthodox main character and its balance of angst and pop culture slapstick and the character became less of a villain, though the element of his moral ambiguity remained.

DEADPOOL starts wearing his logo on his belt buckle in this series.

In this series we see DEADPOOL as part of Weapon X, and sporting a different costume.

Cable and DEADPOOL
2004: DEADPOOL's next series is with his former enemy Cable.

Fastforward in 2011: Cable is dead (this is comics, don't worry he won't be dead long), DEADPOOL wants to honor his fallen friend, the best he can. So, he wents to a mission with his best Cable impression.

DEADPOOL : Merc with a Mouth
2009: Another ongoing DEADPOOL series, DEADPOOL: Merc with a Mouth teams up Wade with the head of the zombie DEADPOOL.

DEADPOOL Corps
2010: gives us the DEADPOOL Corps series. The series features alternate versions of DEADPOOL, consisting of DEADPOOL, Lady DEADPOOL, Headpool, and two new characters; Kidpool, a kid version of DEADPOOL who uses lightsabers, and Dogpool, a dog version of DEADPOOL. (The creation of this series should be noted, because of the actor Ryan Reynolds who originally played Wade Wilson (DEADPOOL's alter ego) in X-Men Origins: Wolverine is now playing Hal Jordan from a rival comic company. Hal Jordan is the character Green Lantern from the Green Lantern Corps. Connection: Green Lantern Corps ~ DEADPOOL Corps)

Uncanny X-Force
2010: DEADPOOL is also part of an X-Men black ops strike team, X-Force lead by Wolverine and Archangel.

He wears his usual costume only changing the red part to gray.

a featurette on DEADPOOL would be cool..

This is the 25th article in my Know Your CBM Character series. Any requests and suggestions for an article for this series write it down in the comment section BELOW.

Message to the CBM community:To those who are making requests, check first [here] because I might have done an article on the character already. If I have not please be patient, I will get on it as soon as possible (but consider the fact that I spend hours writing one of these articles). Try to limit your request to characters that already have been adapted to live media, so that the feature will at least be relevant to the site – Comic Book Movie(though I include TV characters). Characters in Manga or Anime’, I am not particularly familiar of, I am not discounting these characters but it will probably take some time before I write a feature on them because I have to read up on these characters. Thank you for reading these articles! If there are errors on the feature article above, blame it on my age, humanity and ignorance. Just be sure to check the comment section for the corrections, any error I made will surely be pointed out and corrected by much bigger geeks (because there will always be a bigger geek out there). -This has been PollMaster inviting you to the geekside. MABUHAY CBM and Godspeed!

Personally, I think that someone else should play Deadpool since Ryan Reynolds will be busy with Green Lantern. Plus, the Deadpool movie is a reboot and not connect to the other Xmen movies, so yeah.
Good article as always Pollmaster. Green Goblin or Harry Osborn next?

Deadpool is Ryan Reynolds or Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool. I think he better suited to be Deadpool than any other CBM hero. (See the movie Van Wilder, and you will understand)

Man, that Wolverine TV spot was great and the punchline showed Reynold's greatness in the role, exactly as I imagined Wade Wilson, before going totally insane.

Speaking of other media: what about his appearance in Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions?
StrangerX
StrangerX - 4/14/2011, 6:33 AM
Just like Patrick Stewart was meant to be Prof X. Reynolds was meant to be Deadpool. However, I did see someone suggest Dane Cook for the role which isn't that bad.

@skidz-Deadpool in Shattered Dimensions was awesome def one of my fav levels.

StrangerX: It was a good one, but I still think it's odd that through the majority of the movie player's are presented with variations of classic Spidey villains, then, suddenly, Deadpool? It was weird, but it was cool.

FYI on Weapon XI. One of those pictures is Scott Adkins, the other is Ryan Reynolds. Do you see how the one on the left is much leaner and smaller than the one on the right? In the original script, Wade Wilson wasn't supposed to be Weapon XI, it was just supposed to be an amalgam of all of the mutants. They decided that Ryan Reynolds needed more screen time, so they changed the script last minute and did reshoots. That is why in some shots he looks really skinny and in others he looks really beefy. That is also why the end of Wolverine came off as a cluster cuss.

Great article, Love Deadpool!!

Also, his healing power is in direct proportion to his injury, i.e. if he gets a cannon ball to his stomach it heals in about the same time it to to make the injury, but when the injury is small and "slow" it is also slow to heal, that is why Squirrel Girl was able to incapacitate Deapool, tiny scratches he couldn't heal fast enough from.

And he was in the movie Hulk Vs., maybe some others, I can't remember. He was hysterically funny in Hulk Vs.

Mrs. Marvel next!!!

Whats the Big Deal with deadpool? He has mixed powers and he carrys around guns and swords, ok, but so what? hes an annoying side character. thas why he was killed off in the movie - becuz hes not that important to be considered a main character. so why the hell is everybody pushing so hard for him to have his own movie?

kriswone
kriswone - 4/14/2011, 9:20 AM
@KidLantern003 - I can see that you have never read ONE of the Deadpool comics nor one that he was a "side character" in, "side character" is belittling to Bucky and Deadpool is more pervasive than Bucky, name one character that has had 5 simultaneous comic series.

On a side note, Green Lantern fans seem to dislike Deadpool, every time I see a comment bashing Deadpool the avatar of the poster is something related to Green Lantern! I mean what is the deal with that? (Ala Seinfeld)

Oh, and what is goin' on behind the Joker clapping in that gif? lol, normal jail lovin'?

Oh and 7.9% of ALL marvel sales for the month of march was Deadpool related:

"If the number of Deadpool ongoing comics is combined with the number books where Deadpool makes an appearance and is compared to the total number of comics sold by Marvel in March 2011, Deadpool comics make up 7.90% of all Marvel comics sold"
