JEAN GREY : The PHOENIX

JEAN GREY : The PHOENIX

"I'm always Jean. And I'm always the PHOENIX. I died. I scattered in a trillion directions. And then started to pull together again, outside the White Hot Room. But I'm starting to see now. Parts of me... Parts of me never came home." --JEAN GREY

With the X-Men First Class movie looming in the horizon, we need to educate the non-comicbook readers who were part of the real X-Men First Class… before its too late.

Who is JEAN GREY?
JEAN GREY is a powerful mutant, An omega-level telekinetic and telepath. She is a founding member of the X-Men. JEAN GREY has gained near limitless powers as a recurrent host of the PHOENIX Force.

JEAN GREY is a Marvel Comics superheroine who has been known under the aliases Marvel Girl and PHOENIX. She was created by writer Stan Lee and artist/co-writer Jack Kirby, JEAN GREY first appeared in X-Men #1 (September 1963).JEAN GREY is a mutant born with telepathic and telekinetic powers. Her powers first manifested when she saw her childhood friend being hit by a car. She is a caring, nurturing figure, but she also must deal with being an Omega-level mutant and the physical manifestation of the cosmic PHOENIX Force. She faces death several times in the history of the series.

CHANGING APPEARANCES
Marvel Girl
In their first appearance as the X-Men, JEAN GREY and the other members wore a standard blue and gold training uniform.

Marvel Girl costume 2
Later JEAN GREY redesigned the X-Men's training uniforms. While her teammates more or less stayed the same, her own costume changed into a more female version. The mask no longer covered her entire head and the costume was now low-necked. Additionally, it had a new red belt.

Marvel Girl costume 3
Later on the X-Men got personalized style costumes. JEAN GREY wore a rather revealing green mini-dress with yellow boots, gloves along with a belt and a facemask in the same color completed the outfit.

PHOENIX
The PHOENIX Force duplicated JEAN GREY’s body and infused it with some of her life-force and essence, she posed as JEAN GREY. PHOENIX wore a green body suit with a black neck area. Long opera gloves and over-knee boots, as well as a sash were made of some golden fabric that almost looked like liquid metal. The clip of the sash as well as the logo on her chest were stylized PHOENIX symbols.

Black Queen
The PHOENIX was manipulated by the Hellfire Club to become their Black Queen, she was dressed in the the Hellfire club’s dress code: a black corset and panties, black boots, opera gloves and a dark cape that was colored red on the inside.

Dark PHOENIX
When the PHOENIX no longer can repress her dark side she transformed into Dark PHOENIX. Her costume changed shifting from green to red, this version no longer had a black neckpiece and the chest emblem was much bigger.

X-Factor
When the real JEAN GREY was found alive, she and the original X-Men came up with the idea for X-Factor. They masquerade as a mutant hunting group but in reality they were helping other mutants to cope with their powers.

X-Terminator
When they need to use their mutant powers the X-Factor shifts to their X-Terminators persona.

later she'll wear the outfit with a different mask, or dispense with the mask altogether.

X-Factor costume 2
When they saved New York from Apocalypse X-Factor finally ended their charade as a mutant hunting team, they are now seen as a legitimate superhero group. They continue using the name X-Factor but their costumes are a redesigned X-Terminators outfit.

X-Man Again (for a short time)
On a short leave of absense from the X-Factor, JEAN GREY helped the new team of X-Men in one of their missions, she briefly wore their new gold and blue standard uniform.

X-Factor costume 3
JEAN GREY returned to X-Factor, briefly wore her old red and gold outfit then changed it to a new blue and gold costume.

Rejoining the X-Men
X-Factor rejoined the X-Men and got new costumes. JEAN GREY wore an orange and blue colored outfit.

JEAN GREY adapting the mantle of the PHOENIX
Taking a sabbatical from the X-Men with his husband, Cyclops, JEAN GREY adopted a new costume that was a simulacrum of the one that PHOENIX had worn, while posing as her.

PHOENIX costume 2
JEAN GREY rejoined the X-Men in a new red and yellow costume. It sported a huge PHOENIX logo that stretched out from her shoulders to her lower abdomen. [Uncanny X-Men #381]

Black Outfits
Later on Professor X changed the entire look of his students. Changing from bright colored costumes to some sort of military street wear.

Black PHOENIX?
In a story that takes place 105 in the future, The PHOENIX awoke she is in a full-blown fiery energy form, she wears low-cut black leather pants, opera gloves in the same style and a black PHOENIX symbol on her chest

White PHOENIX
In the same storyline above, JEAN GREY met an entire host of PHOENIXes wearing different colors, JEAN GREY finds herself wearing a white version of the standard PHOENIX outfit and was referred to as White PHOENIX of the Crown.

LIVE MEDIA APPEARANCE
Famke Janssen portrays JEAN GREY/PHOENIX in the feature films X-Men, X2: X-Men United, and X-Men: The Last Stand.

POWERS & ABILITIES
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

Telepathic Defense: She can manifest her telepathy in a number of defensive ways.

Telepathic Cloak: She can mask her presence and the use of her abilities from being detected by other psions and psychic entities. She can extend these defenses to others around her as well.

Cloak Mind: Ability to rearrange the “mental engrams” of mutants so their distinctive mutant thought patterns cannot be detected by Cerebro-type devises or by other telepaths.

Psionic Shield: Ability to erect a psychic shield for protection of herself and of others minds.

Telepathic Illusions: She can create realistic telepathic illusions and cause people to experience events which are not actually occurring.

Telepathic Camouflage: She can alter the apparent physical appearance of herself and other people by altering the perceptions of those around her.

Telepathic Manipulation: She can manipulate other people's minds easily, achieving a variety of effects.

Mind Control: She can control the thoughts and actions of others.

Heal Trauma: The ability to erase a person’s memories and to heal mental trauma through “psychic surgery,” the power to stimulate or deaden the pain and pleasure centers in a persons brain.

Mental Sedating: Can telepathically "sedate" her victims so that, if already rendered unconscious, they remain so for as long as she continues to "sedate" them.

Neural Jumpstart: She can increase the speed of neural signals in the brain, she could increase another mutants powers to incredible levels, but the effect was only temporary.

Dilate Power: Ability to place “psychic inhibitors” in the minds of mutant adversaries to prevent them from using their powers

Mind Link: Ability to develop a mental link with any person which remains as a connection to that individual.

Psionic Blasts: She can project psionic force bolts which have no physical effects but which can affect a victim's mind so as to cause the victim pain or unconsciousness and turning someone brain-dead.

Astral Projection: She can project her astral form from her body onto Astral Plane or the physical plane. In the physical plane she can travel in astral form over vast distances. In the astral plane, she can mentally create psionic objects and manipulate the aspects of her environment. She can communicate with others astrally through her own will, or through contact with the thoughts and memories of others.

Mental Detection: She can sense the presence of another superhuman mutant within a small but as yet undefined radius of himself by perceiving the distinctive mental radiations emitted by such a being.

Psionic Firebird: She can manifest her telepathy as a psionic firebird; whose claws could inflict both physical and mental damage.

Telekinesis: telekinetic abilities enable her to levitate herself or other objects, propel or manipulate them however she wishes, stimulate individual molecules to create heat, and generate concussive force or protective shields.

Telekinesis Force-Fields: JEAN GREY usually protects herself with others a personal force field. As well powerful shields and energy blast.

PHOENIX Force Avatar: As the favored avatar of the PHOENIX Force, Jean may greatly increase her powers by tapping into the life energies of those yet unborn.

Interstellar Travel: A PHOENIX Force avatar can fly unaided through the vacuum of space, and can travel interstellar distances faster than the speed of light

Cosmic Pyrokinesis: Jean, while acting as a PHOENIX Force avatar, can create 'cosmic' flames under any conditions even the impossible ones such as vacuum space or underwater.

Telekinetic Sensitivity: That lets her feel the texture of objects she has a telekinetic hold on, feel when other objects come into contact with them, and probe them at a molecular level to identify if they contain alien materials or feel when two things which she has a telekinetic “hold” upon are similarly composed.

Resurrection: The PHOENIX Force can resurrect others after they have died. It is unknown if factors such as time since death have an effect on the ability to successfully resurrect a person, nor is it clear how the PHOENIX calls back the soul of a person to their body.

Immortality: Jean and the PHOENIX Force are one-and-the-same entity at some fundamental level, and as such Jean can never truly die.

Temporal Manipulation: While acting as the PHOENIX Force, Jean can manipulate the past across large temporal distances and with a profound knowledge of the causal effect her actions will have.

AbilitiesJEAN GREY excels in astral combat. Jean has shown some proficiency in hand-to-hand, non-psionic combat; the extent of this is unknown as she prefers to utilize her telekinesis and telepathy during battle. She has a college education from Metro College.

This is the 40th article in my Know Your CBM Character series. Any requests and suggestions for an article for this series write it down in the comment section BELOW.

Message to the CBM community:To those who are making requests, check first [here] because I might have done an article on the character already. If I have not please be patient, I will get on it as soon as possible (but consider the fact that I spend hours writing one of these articles). Try to limit your request to characters that already have been adapted to live media, so that the feature will at least be relevant to the site – Comic Book Movie(though I include TV characters). Characters in Manga or Anime’, I am not particularly familiar of, I am not discounting these characters but it will probably take some time before I write a feature on them because I have to read up on these characters. Thank you for reading these articles! If there are errors on the feature article above, blame it on my age, humanity and ignorance. Just be sure to check the comment section for the corrections, any error I made will surely be pointed out and corrected by much bigger geeks (because there will always be a bigger geek out there). -This has been PollMaster inviting you to the geekside. haha... whatever happened with the panel in x-men 2 or 3 (the lee/kirby class)... there's one where all the guys are pining over how sexy jean grey is.. albeit, probably because they havent seen lady parts in damn near forever... but there's a panel where professor x is stewing in his own psychic energies lamenting how HE is in love with Jean Grey and wondering how the world will ever understand this profound love between an old crippled man and a 14-15 year old girl.....
did anything ever happen with that? or was it just forgotten and hoped to not be put under too much scrutiny?

has there been a Gambit article yet? or possibly a Mr. Sinister? or possibly even Rogue, since she's been played in x-men movies... although horribly and in a way that ruins everything that was ever interesting about her to begin with...
thats my vote, the REAL Rogue... the mystique betrayal, miss marvel grief.. the sheer tragedy of being a knockout bombshell that everyone that ever sees her immediately wants to touch her without thinking... much like our inherent reaction to most insanely gorgeous goddesses.... but the reality that even though she longs for them to touch her, and to be able to touch them back.. it would certainly mean pain and death for an innocent... i just remembered why i hate bryan singer again..
Rogue is such a great character with more inner strife and turmoil than Logan on his worst day, especially after the ragin cajun catches her scent...

Not a bad breakdown of the character. You caught most of the major and some of the minor things. Good job!

@pollmaster - the professor x internal love declaration is on the bottom of page 4 of X-men issue #3 "Beware of the Blob" if you can scan or post it would be greatly beneficial to your article showing the effect Jean has on people, even many years her elder

or for anyone that has a scan or masterwork collection of it... its a pretty interesting insight into the motivations of professor x..

Jean, COME BACK!!!! Look what's happened to the team in your absence!!!!!!!!! You're to them what Martian Manhunter is to the Justice League: the team's heart and soul, even more than Wolverine is.

Way I see it, they shouldn't have killed her off. Instead, they should have just had her leave Scott, let him date Emma, and show Logan a little courtesy and let HIM take her out. That would've kept the mess that was Phoenix: Endsong from happening.

your better than this pollmaster... stop sacrificing quality for quantity so you can squeeze out 15 features a day...

at least attempt to give us some information about why or when (even if its a stretch)... just saying she had a green skirt, then a blue suit, then some yellow, then blue and yellow, then a military suit, is admittedly, kind of irritating and degrading to people that want to learn something from these articles... not just 'ooh' and 'aah' over the different pictures of scantily clad girls...
just sayin... we know you can do better..

yea i can see what your sayin... all very good points.. i guess its just a matter of preference..

i guess just through personal experiences, ive always seen the goth/emo angle as kind of a copout.. although i know for some people its really not at all. like i said, just from my experiences. but the ms. marvel thing never really bothered me because i honestly never knew about her before that.. so i cant really say how popular or unpopular she ever was or any impact she had on other characters..
so i guess i just still see the shy/lonely rogue as being waaay too obvious and missing all the key elements id come to know and love... to me she's just like every other girl in america now, nothing different.. sad and confused? yea thats puberty... nobody wants to touch you? wear a skirt pierce your tongue if your that desperate... iceman was her boyfriend and everyone could tell he couldnt care less after a pretty short time.. but somebody that everybody is always tryin to get a piece of, especially a smoothe talkin cajun like remy... that actually promotes character growth... and is more entertaining to me...
again sorry, i ramble like mad sometimes..

and whats with BlindLemonDeath? you a stooge hater?

These articles started off strong, but have become mostly a visual history of the character's costumes. Anyone wanting to know info on their favorite Marvel characters should visit Marvel.com or Marvel.wikia.com.

That being said, Black Phoenix FTW! I think I got a lap dance from her once ;)
