Comic Book History

Who is ABIN SUR?
ABIN SUR is a DC Comics superhero, who first appeared in Showcase #22 (September–October 1959): "SOS Green Lantern". He was a member of the Intergalactic peace group, Green Lantern Corps, and is best known as the predecessor of Green Lantern Hal Jordan, whom ABIN SUR's power ring chose as his replacement. Gil Kane and John Broome created ABIN SUR.
First Appearance

In his initial appearance, ABIN SUR was a relatively unimportant character, his sole function being the means in which earthman Hal obtained his power ring. After his initial introduction and death in Showcase #22, ABIN SUR made only a few sporadic appearances in the DC Universe in the form of flashbacks or parallel worlds.

Years later some of ABIN SUR's adventures were told, one of this is an adventure on Earth's Wild West era. He teamed up with a Marshall ancestor of his successor, Hal Jordan.

During Sinestro Corps War storyline, it is revealed that Abin discovered a prophecy concerning the Multiverse, The Powers of the Emotional Spectrum, and The Blackest Night prior to his death. He learns that Earth is the birthplace of The Black: the antithesis of the emotional spectrum that the prophecy predicts will "one day consume all light and all life." He discovers that the prophecy foretells his own death, when his ring fails him in his time of greatest need.

During the "Blackest Night" event, the finale of the prophecy becomes reality. A black power ring reaches ABIN SUR's grave and bids him to rise. Black Lantern Abin confronted Hal Jordan, but was defeated when his black ring was cut-off from him.

In DC's "Flashpoint" event, the timeline was altered and in this new time stream, ABIN SUR did not die and Hal Jordan never became Green Lantern. Therefore, we get to see ABIN SUR the Green Lantern of Sector 2814 in all his glory, and why he is considered one of the great Green Lanterns.

ABIN SUR : The Fallen Lantern

LIVE MEDIA APPEARANCE
Challenge of the Superfriends
ABIN SUR first appearance in other media was in the Challenge of the Superfriends episode "Secret Origins of the Superfriends" voiced by Dick Ryal.

Superman : The Animated Series
In Superman : The Animated series, ABIN SUR was the Green Lantern of Sector 2814. His ship crash-landed just outside Metropolis, severely wounding the Lantern. In his dying moments, he sent his Ring to seek a replacement - unlike its comicbook counterpart; the replacement is not Hal Jordan but Kyle Rayner. Sinestro was hot on ABIN SUR's heels, hoping to obtain his Power Battery, but he found only Superman.

Justice League: The New Frontier
ABIN SUR appeared in the animated film Justice League: The New Frontier voiced by Corey Burton. In the movie, he is caught in the explosion of a US spacecraft "Flying Cloud" traveling to Mars (which ironically was co-piloted by Jordan, along with Rick Flag, who was under orders to detonate C-4s) and gives his ring to Hal Jordan before dying.

Green Lantern : First Flight
In the film Green Lantern: First Flight ABIN SUR was voiced by Richard McGonagle. The film provides more background than any of his previous animated appearances. He was sent by the Guardians on an undercover investigation on Kanjar Ro, who managed to locate and steal a yellow element. However, he was discovered by one of his lackeys and mortally wounded. Injured he was forced to steal a ship that subsequently crashes on Earth where he finds Hal Jordan on who he passes his ring before dying. His appearance here is modified to make him look more alien, with various horn-like appendages attached to his face and only four digits on each hand.

Green Lantern : Emerald Knights
In the anthology movie Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, ABIN SUR appear was voiced by Arnold Vosloo. His story is a loose adaptation of "Tygers", and featuring Sinestro and Atrocitus.

LIVE MEDIA APPEARANCE
Temuera Morrison
Temuera Morrison will play ABIN SUR in 2011's “Green Lantern" live action movie. In the movie we are told the ABIN SUR was the only Lantern to defeat Parallax, and trap him within the lost sector, which had been massacred by the fear entity. While on his usual patrol of Sector 2814 from his Spaceship he receives a message from Sinestro, warning him that Parallax is free, and moments after the message an attack is made on ABIN SUR by Parallax, who mortally wounds ABIN SUR, leading him to escape with the use of a small space pod and crash land into earth, waiting for the worthy successor of the ring, Hal Jordan. He shortly dies after passing on his ring to Hal.

POWERS & ABILITIES
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

ABIN SUR is a bearer of the Green Lantern Ring and one of the most powerful of the Corps. The abilities the ring grants him are:

Artificial Intelligence: Every ring has a connection to the Main Battery on Oa, which taps into an artificial intelligence. It acts as an "on-board computer," telling the wearer what they need to know. It can respond either aloud or silently directly to the wearer's mind. The AI contains a large database of information that may be crucial to a Lantern's success. The ring also translates nearly every language to and from the wearer.

Communicator: The ring can act as a personal communicator between Green Lanterns. They have also been seen connected to telephones.

Costumes: The wearer of the ring may create any costume they choose, based on their personal preferences, whenever they choose. The ring projects the costume over any clothes already worn at the time. The only rules that the Guardians of the Universe implement on the creation of an individual costumed is that the ring bearer display the insignia of the Green Lantern Corps.

Energy Projection: The rings can also project beams, form protective bubbles and force fields, and fire destructive blasts. Sometimes, depending on the wearer, the beams and blasts make sounds.

Energy Constructs: The rings can construct anything the wearer can imagine from hard-light energy, as long as they are willing to make it. The more determined the wearer is the more complex and intricate these things can be. The constructs can even be so complex as to form working machines, computers, and even people.

Flight: The ring allows the wearer to fly in atmosphere or in space, and can achieve incredible speeds, moving from planet to planet in a matter of hours.

Matter Manipulation: A Green Lantern can use their ring to manipulate nearby matter, such as water, for various purposes such as a construct that acts like energy construct.

Recharging: The rings need to be recharged by means of a Power Battery. Other large sources of power may be used to recharge a power ring, however effectiveness may vary.

Temperature Control: The Ring can increase or decrease the temperature of anything, even something as large as stars, or even create bubbles of intense heat or cold, even down to Absolute Zero.

Wormhole/Warps: The ring can open wormholes to cut down on distance.

Healing: A wielder can command a ring to heal him/her/itself of any injures incurred. It can also heal others.

Energy twin: The ring can create an energy copy of the wielder, which is connected to the ring wielder, any information the twin gathers is transferred to the wielder upon touch while others cannot see this twin apart from fellow Green Lanterns.

Sub-routines: The power rings have inner programming or mechanisms, which can executed without the users permission. One such sub-routine is the autoshield. This shield automatically protects a wielder from external harm and has been proven capable of protecting the wielder from planetary level attacks.

Message to the CBM community:
To those who are making requests, check first [here] because I might have done an article on the character already. If I have not, please be patient, I will get on it as soon as possible (but consider the fact that I spend hours writing one of these articles). Try to limit your request to characters that already have been adapted to live media, so that the feature will at least be relevant to the site – Comic Book Movie(though I include TV characters). Characters in Manga or Anime’, I am not particularly familiar of, I am not discounting these characters but it will probably take some time before I write a feature on them because I have to read up on these characters. Thank you for reading these articles! If there are errors on the feature article above, blame it on my age, humanity and ignorance. Just be sure to check the comment section for the corrections, any error I made will surely be pointed out and corrected by much bigger geeks (because there will always be a bigger geek out there). -This has been PollMaster inviting you to the geekside. The scenes with Abin Sur in GL were epic. The first half of GL is actually really good, but falls apart in the second half. Tried to do too much in little time. Needed more Oa scenes (his training went by way too quick.) But apparently they DID film more Oa scenes, but didn't have money/time to finish them. Which sucks. I doubt they'll want to pour anymore money into it for a Director's Cut.

I don't think this will make enough for a sequel, which sucks. So probably the next time wee see GL is in Justice League movie, or they could do a Kyle Rayner movie, sure that'd be way cheaper to do.

Abin Sur wins versus Darwin, although the more I analyze this, Darwin lived longer on screen.

@plasticman Oddly I think they both had same amount of screen time.

Darwin shouldn't have died,2nd most likeable of the students.

I think if by some miracle a sequel does happen, they'll be making budget cuts. I think the best ones to do would be:

Make Hal's suit more real. Add little CGI to it so it still looks like energy flows through it

Make the guardians midgets in blue make up.

Get actors to play some of the aliens that resemble humans enough where make up and add-ons work.

Just use as little as CGI as possible in cases where it works. They're going to have to with a lot of it, but in some areas it'd work better if they didn't, IMO. Might be hard to make the film visually flow well though.

Hire a good writer(one).Clear up all plot holes.Ignore most of the first movie. Are wait ten years for a reboot.

Man I wish Green Lantern was better, then we wouldn't worry about any of this.

Yeah, writing wasn't that good, and pacing. Two biggest problems with this film. Didn't they have four writers working on this or something? Might explain why it was so all over the place.

Darwin was pointless to have in First Class haha, he was there then he died. Abin Sur had a point in being in a movie for a short time, I can say I enjoyed Green Lantern more than First Class. Great article Pol.

Nice post as always. Just seen GL tonight. The after credit scene was awesome and made no sense. The second trip to OA also confused me.

I'd forgotten how terrible the Superfriends were. Still good for a laugh, though. Thanks for the clip.
