Joe Quesada attributes success of Marvel Movies to Comic Book Writers

Do we agree or disagree?

There's no denying after watching the trailer for "Iron Man 2" that we are all hyped up, [well we were hyped up before but I think we are now in a frenzy].

Joe Q, Marvel's EIC, says that that is mainly due to the comic book creators themselves. He also says that that is the main reason that separates them from the pack.

"But the beauty of the Marvel films now, is that guys who work in comics are involved," said Joe Quesada. "That's more than we could have said ten years ago about comic book movies that were getting made."

"Matt Fraction is a perfect example," he continued. "He got to sit down with Jon Favreau and Kevin Feige and discuss the new Iron Man movie. Being the current 'Iron Man' writer, Matt could offer a unique perspective on the character. Bendis is involved in the Marvel Creative Committee, as am I. I'm sure, from time to time, we'll be bringing more creators in as projects call for them. More and more, the Marvel film world reaches out to the comics world, and now you're starting to see that other studios and comic companies are taking note and are looking to copy that formula in some way."

Well the formula works, and if it works then it's worth copying. And if the byproduct is good then it's a win for us CBM fans, for we will have great CBMs that transitioned well from the colored pages of our comics to the movie magic of the cinemas.

If our comic book writers are much involved in the movie making process, we will be assured that what we see in the movies is not the bastardization of the characters we share adventures with.

If the movies are close to the comics it makes better story and stays true to the source material. The writers of the books had so much to do with the success because they know the characters so well they can make amazing stories. Iron Man and Incredible Hulk were both amazing movies that showed what can be done.

I would say a lotof that credit should go to Stan Lee. BTW is a Marvel Legend. So many people say he's a glory hound, but most of the Marvel story ideas started with his imagination, and he had others invision it the rest of the way. Most people can't even get past the first part. It takes a lot of creativity to come up with a great background for a character, and Lee did jus that for many character's today.

I agree with Inspace.

Not only are the directors fans themselves, but the directors are consulting with Marvel's writers who know the characters better than anyone--Marvel's biggest fans.

Well, obviously if the comic writers never created the characters the movies wouldn't exist, so on a base level of course its thanks to them. But the movies certainly seem to benefit from hands on writer involvement. Hopefully it continues.

I would say that I agree with Joe, but also i would throw in that you need the directors, actors, etc. to really listen take notes and translate that to the silver screen.

Look at Spiderman, Raimi pretty much did what the heck he wanted, read a few books and went from there.

Favreau on the other hand, well we all pretty much saw Iron Man, and it was 100x better than any of the spiderman flicks.

the question is why, because Favreau cared enough to listen to the creators and writers and he had the team together who really wanted to translate the already establishes great story to the movies, and it worked out perfectly.

I am not supporting any Marvel character movie that is coming out of somewhere other than marvel studios, they've all been pretty much crap so far.

I just don't get why some writers seem to think it's OK to ignore the source material and make up their own garbage. When making a CBM they should just make a comic book movie. period. the comic writers and artists are the ones who know the history, style and nuance of their work and the company knows what the fans want and what makes the franchise so popular in the first place.

So, when they don't make use of these resources, they're guaranteeing the existing fanbase will be upset (for deviating from the source) and they're taking a risk with the non-fans (by coming up with brand new ideas that haven't been tried and tested).
