The Wolfman Receives An R-Rating From The MPAA

Joe Johnston's upcoming Horror remake won't be stingy on the gore apparently...

Slashfilm are reporting that they have received an email from Universal saying that The Wolfman has finally received a rating from the MPAA, and has been rated ‘R’ for “bloody horror, violence and gore".

The film hasn't been having an easy time of it, with delays, re shoots, composers(Danny Elfman) quitting, editing changes etc. It seems that Universal are actually chuffed with the news that they have an R rated movie on their hands, despite the negative financial consequences that can go along with it. I guess they are happy to let the fans know that they decided to go with the longer, bloodier, more violent (and from all accounts better) cut of the film.

CBM fans have been watching this movies development very closely because director Joe Johnston will next be turning his attention to The First Avenger: Captain America. So lets hope The Wolfman doesn't turn out to be a howler;)

And here I was thinking this movie was going to be boring as sh*t. Now that it has an "R" rating, I'm sure it will be great. lol!

Good, PG-13 is the kiss of death, generally.

The R rating is nice for sure(I want to see some hardcore wolfman action), but I mean the original Universal monster movies did well enough without an R rating so I would have seen it either way.

Damn, I was hoping it would be R not for violence but for some hot wolf on girl action.

Johnston has been stalling with this movie because he has no idea who to cast for Cap.

Before anyone explains to me how wrong that statement is, I'd like to say I was being sarcastic.

Wadey09 - 12/8/2009, 8:28 PM
what worries me is that he could make an EXCELLENT horror film and just downright STINK with Cap's movie.

i mean he has directed quite a few Good movies like Pagemaster, October Sky, and Honey I Shrunk the Kids.
but he also directed Jurassic Park III.

of course Jon Favereau directed Elf and Zathura before Iron Man. and Captain America comes out in about a year and a half. he hasn't even cast Cap yet!

does anyone else share these concerns?

nope, mostly because there's no way cap's coming out that early I'm betting it gets pushed back.

@ Wadey
I concur with your thoughts. Wolfman has to prove the JJ can make a real blockbuster for me to be reassured.

Hildago was beautifully shot too. The movie itself was just Ok though. JJ has the vision to make it happen. My concern is that he's not practiced enough.

The other thing I would love to see in the movie would be that his shield becomes almost a secondary character. Cap is able to do just about anything he wants with it, so it deserves sidekick type treatment.

Can't wait for The First Avenger...

@Zoo: I dunno, I liked Hidalgo. I thought it was brilliant, through n through. Certainly we should wait and see what Joe Johnston has to offer with Wolfman, but either way, I don't think Captain America would be handed to someone that Marvel, and now Disney, wouldn't trust.

As for Wolfman, this is excitin news! R-rating means good things for this movie. Can't wait to see some werewolf rampagin done right!

but hasn't Marvel trusted other directors before?
Lexi Alexander, Rob Bowman, Bret Ratner, and Willard Huyck to name a few?

Ah wade, but Marvel studios didn't trust them, Fox and lionsgate and universal did. So far marvel Studios has a pretty solid track record.

I'm in thwhtGuardian camp. Joe Johnston knows his stuff. Jurassic Park III was not a bad movie. Its only problem was that it wasn't relevant to the first two films. It really didn't need to be made as sequel so much as it just should have been a spin-off. The first one was the introduction to the dinosaurs, and the second was their exposure to the world.
But Jurassic Park III could be tagged, "The further adventures of Dr. Alan Grant!"
It just was out of sequence with the other movies. So it put people off.

Yeah, I didn't mind Jurassic park three, as a fan of the first novel I liked it for it's use of several of the sub plots that were not included in the first movie. The whole thing with the raptor egg, and the scenes of them running from the pterodactyls were both from the original novel so I really liked seeing those elements on screen.
If you want real proof of what to expect from him just watch the Rocketeer. It's a stellar super hero period piece which is what Captain America will ideally be like.

I don't understand why everyone seems to cream over an R rating. You can have a perfectly good horror movie and never see an ounce of blood or gore.

Weapon420 - 12/9/2009, 12:27 AM
@thwhtGuardian, your right some movies with PG-13 ratings are pretty good, but this is a werewolf movie, werewolves are violent, blood-thirsty beasts, to not see blood or gore in a werewolf movie would not be satisfying, you might as well watch Teen Wolf, lol!

Or twilight...
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/9/2009, 12:52 AM
or the original...there was no blood or gore in the old universal monster movies and they still to this day incite fear. A well placed shadow is far more terrifying than seeing a lung and a gallon off blood squirt across the screen. I find suggested mutilation and psychological terror to be just as powerful as actually seeing the violence, after all sometimes our minds are much more graphic than any movie could ever be.

I'm not disappointed it's R, I'm just saying the rating should hardly be confirmation that the movie will be awesome, or that and R rating makes it any better.
Phinehas
Phinehas - 12/9/2009, 1:18 AM
Still in the twG camp! Hitchcock was the best at that sort of thing. Anticipation of death is worse than the death itself. Everyone thought Shyamalan was the next Hitchcock because of how masterfully he pulled that off in the Sixth Sense. Ce la vie...
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 12/9/2009, 5:07 AM
What you are saying is true Guardian, but the R rating probably means more realistic violence.

It's not that seeing someone torn apart is a big attraction, but if a Werewolf had the strength and power they are said to have, then a victim would indeed need to be torn apart so the excitement is in seeing the Werewolf and his handiwork in all ti's full glory and detail. They don't have to show it of course, but personally I would rather they did.
