Live Action Ghost In The Shell Movie Update

Live Action Ghost In The Shell Movie Update

The movies script writer Laeta Lalogridis talks a little about the direction the live action version of the Sci-Fi Manga is taking...

Its been over 2 years since Stephen Spielberg was announced as the man to bring the popular Manga/Anime Ghost In The Shell to the screen. Since then, we have found out that Shutter Island writer (and Avatar executive producer) Laeta Kalogridis would be writing the script for Spielberg. While out promoting the release of Shutter Island, MoviesOnline caught up with Kalogridis and asked her about the latest on the adaptation...

The main question they ask(for Ghost In The Shell fans anyway) is whether the upcoming movie would be an adaptation of the Anime, or the original Manga...

"Ghost In The Shell was originally the manga. The anime came from the original graphic novel and then — and that anime, as you know, is a relatively famous, groundbreaking piece of material — also generated two seasons of an animated television show as well. And this is an adaptation of the original manga, the original comic book that sort of began everything."

She also says..

"[It has] a lot of action… lots of action. There's still going to be a lot of atmosphere – [the movie] is about vast possibilities – all of this technology, the internet – it's about the limitless possibilities of this technology."

I have never read the comic, but was a big fan of the first Anime so lets hope this gets beyond the pre-production stage and gets made! These live action Manga/Anime adaps have a tendency to just drop off the radar.

Ooooook.

Yeah Multi, just keeping an eye out, its slim pickens at the weekend.

Ozy, I'm not a huge fan of Anime as a rule but there are some great ones. This, Akira, Cowboy Bebop..you should check some stuff out before dismissing it all as crap.

By the way, what's with this bullshit rule about "not reading manga or watching anime"? i personally think its retarded. Its just a different type of comic books and cartoons. I find them to be quite entertaining, i used to think they all suck, but there is quite a number of good entertaining ones like Ghost in a shell. Yes, its really really good. Just try to get used to subtitles.

@Ozy: That's a really ignorant blanket statement to make. Some anime films are as good if not better than the best films out there. Akira was ahead of its time in terms of animation (still doesn't look bad) and the story is epic. Ghost in the Shell is an incredible movie and the TV series isn't bad either. They discuss some really high-brow issues about the definition of life and the eventual creation of true artificial intelligence, cyborg bodies, etc., and how that will affect the definitions of "human" and "soul." Ninja Scroll is the ultimate in gory, adult ninja super-fiction.

@Ror: Great find! I've been keeping track of this story for a while. When Spielberg started talking about it I had hopes that it might actually happen.

I think Ozy sucks just like all other little petulant high schoolers.

Sorry, was I generalizing? I'm just kidding Ozy. You just shouldn't type before you think.

Anime is usually not my cup of tea either but Akira is excellent. Spirited Away was pretty good too

I was pretty worried about this one, but so far Ghost is sounding pretty good. Spielberg can capture the incredible visuals of Ghost, and Shutter Island looks like an interesting story (which means equally interesting writing). Maybe this will make up for DB:E

Ozy- I'm not gonna dump on ya or anything, but you really should give anime a chance before slamming it. Unfortunately many Americans do just that, dismissing it goofy cartoons with convoluted plots and exaggerated animations. While some of this is certainly true (DBZ a prime example), there are a lot of really, really good anime out there that are over-looked because of the above perception. Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Bleach and Full Metal Alchemist are a few examples. I can assure you there is no goofiness in Ghost at all, its as serious as a heart-attack. On the flip side, I've heard some Japanese fans dont like American comics because, to them, they are too short (anime stories are usually ongoing and progressive rather than having microcasm stories in the issues of non-arch comic books), and too serious. They've never read Emerald Dawn, or Hush, or Watchmen or whatever comic book issue so it would be unfair for them to say American comics sucks, right?

It all comes down to style. Anime has a certain style that some people love and others dont care for. Different strokes for different folks, know what I mean? Taste is subjective so theres nothing wrong about liking or not liking it, but there is something wrong in forming an opinion about it without giving it a chance. Just give it a shot. If you dont like it, then you can bitch about it all you wish without people jumping on ya. If you do, then you have a whole new medium of entertainment to explore. Either way you win :)

natasha- Cowboy Beebop is excellent and worth checking out. While I prefer the anime better, you can just check out the movie since its pretty much just like the show. That way, if you dont like it, you only wasted about 80 minutes of your life as opposed to an entire seasons worth of episodes ;)

the reason y most of the anime movies so far have sucked is frankly because... the anime sucked too.

hate to say it fanboys but DBZ is awful. A full season to see a new hair style and to defeat the next "most powerful being in the universe" isnt my type of thing. Now some animes are also very good but dont belong in live action. I loved Yu Yu Hakusho as a kid but thatd make an awful movie.

The thing with animes like ghost in the shell and Cowboy Bebop is that the stories have a lot of depth, the concepts are very adult, and the characters are colorful and deep.

Ghost in the Shell if done well would be a greeat film. The characters are above average but the story is very good and the episodes are done well. Also since the show is done almost like a sitcom (being based on situations... not comedy) makes a movie easier to make. The seasons dont develop a story, there almost like small movies and if done right would be great.

If Cowboy Bebop is done well itd b INCREDIBLE. The characters are the best in TELEVISION HISTORY in my opinion and the story is amazing! Although the episodes mostly are sitcom like once again being situations not the comedy aspect would make a great film if they do include the general theme and develop the backstory of teh show setting the tone. But we'll see i have faith in both of these films.

I'm more of a fan of Battle Angel than GITS. So i can't wait for Cameron to tackle it. But i did enjoy the GITS anime and it could be a great film.

Brent- Ninja Scroll is THE SHIT!!!!! Best anime ever!!!

You will love Ninja Scroll, it can't be fked with. It's my favorite anime, more so than Akira even. I'm not huge into anime either, but it's pretty epic and has stood the test of time incredibly well.

Word to Shaman. Sword of the Stranger is another dope ass ninja anime. Total lone wolf and cub thing going on there.

I hope they do GITS right. I've heard that the Wachowskis originally wanted to do Ghost, but couldn't get it done, so they basically wrote The Matrix as a GITS rip off. I can see it actually.

BillyBlack- HAHA!!! Too true my friend, Ninja Scroll CAN NOT be [frick]ed with!!! I've never seen a better anime than that. "Sword" was pretty cool but i didn't feel as "immersed" in it as much as Scroll.

I've been trying to find the dvd of an anime i saw when i was a kid called Red Hawk. I completely loved it cause it was comic bookish in the sense that the quirky character hid his powers to the rest of the world like a secret identity. It was awesome and had epic battles left and right. I hope i find it eventually. I guess i could always order it somehow. I love it as much as i did the Fatal Fury motion picture ;)) Classic teen shit LOL

Never was a fan of beebop though. Didn't appeal to me at all.

Ghost in the Shell has to be incredibly smart, in other words... Hollywood should walk away, it is above them, they are not ready, they are padawons (did I spell that right?) trying to take on a Sith Lord.

I would just like to clarify that ninja scroll is manga and not anime!!! And I think most anime fails as live action movies because they use american directors and actors who have no idea what anime is all about. Gits is not about action, it's about philosophy and theology and is far too intellectual for most people to grasp.

this might be good... for a movie
but as the work of art that GITS is it has no hope... charlie is very right
highly philosophical content in original GITS
and when there is action it's realistic, not dramatic.
we're talking 30 sencond fire fights max... so the whole "action... lots of action" kinda turns me off. we'll see i guess
god... i just feel bad for the kids of the future who will only know this pulp ameri-manga crap and not experiance true graphic art

The reason why this movie isn't going to be good is because it doesn't follow the manga's whole point. "[the movie] is about vast possibilities – all of this technology, the internet – it's about the limitless possibilities of this technology." This is about 10-20% of the actual theme in GitS. Individuality is the main theme of this amazing franchise. If this writer can not even see this, if she never even saw the movies/series/manga, she has no place writing this screenplay. I am looking forward to a massive letdown. (Sorry for the late response, just found out about this and had to post a comment)

Great another of my favourite mangas is going to be ruined why can't they just leave it alone shirow will be turning in his grave. can tell you all right now if they don't follow the story line of the mangas I will definately not be paying to see this movie and I won't be adding it to my gits collection
