Bloody Disgusting are reporting that Atlanta local Chandler Riggs will be starring as Rick Grimes' (Andrew Lincoln) son Carl in AMC TV's The Walking Dead.

Riggs joins Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey DeMunn, Sarah Wayne Callies, Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, and Michael Rooker in the live-action adaptation of Robert Kirkman's popular comic series that's kicking off with Frank Darabont directing the pilot episode.

Bloody Disgusting are also featuring this first shot of Lincoln in costume as Rick. Apparently this image takes place when Rick is en route to Atlanta and his car breaks down. It's just before he gets on a horse and rides it into downtown Atlanta.

Robert Kirkman, creator/writer of the Image comic and executive producer on the series says: "Writing this book for the past seven years I've gotten very close to the character of Rick. Andrew Lincoln embodies every aspect of the character that fans know and love. After seeing this photo I don't think that there will be a doubt in anyone's mind that he's perfect for the role."

Great stuff, can't wait for this. The character of Carl Grimes goes through a Hell of a lot in this series, its going to be a tough shoot for any young actor taking on that role I think. I wish Riggs the best of luck.

@ keven

its not really lame. Walking Dead was actually done being written when 28 Days Later came out, from what I understand. Also, they never say it happened 28 days later. They say it was roughly a month that passed, but not 28 days specifically.

And it doesn't really matter, because Kirkman pays homage to a LOT of zombie series. paying a homage isn't the same as ripping something off.

Zombies on any TV network is just great. Having it on a channel which produces HBO standards is probably going to make this even better.

I have to admit that I was pretty much ready to give any and all Zombie type movies/books/comics/tv shows the finger when I was urged to check this comic out. It does begin like any other survival horror story, but the writing is sooo good that you just forget about that . I still have a lot to read yet, but its great. I hope the series is half as good.

this series looks damn good. I am becoming less worried about the quality being put in this show because of the fact that it is being distributed by AMC.

Ever since I heard about this show I have been a little worried for the actor playing Carl.

I suppose if someone makes a point of introducing him to the extras playing the zombies and lets him watch the makeup process it may be ok, but on the other hand there will be scenes when they are looking scary, acting scary and I wonder if that is going to be a little much for a kid to deal with. I remember an outtake from Shaun of the Dead when Simon Pegg was surrounded by zombies all moaning and reaching for him and he got genuinely freaked out and had to call cut.

This kid is what 7/8 years old? Normally when a young actor is on a show dealing with adult themes (Dexter) they are sheltered from the death and such because they are not in those scenes. Plus Carl blows off quite a few zombie heads himself. Maybe if AMC could let us know what they are doing to protect this kid (for example showing him the makeup process, doing short takes in his scenes to release the tension - although come to think of it he is only allowed to work a couple of hours a day) then I would feel better about it and they could forestall the parental groups trying to cancel the show.

The real question is going to be whether or not they do the gut wrenching scenes that end up happening in the comic.
