Sony Officially Announces Our New Spider-Man! Sony Officially Announces Our New Spider-Man!

And it ain't young Mr Hutcherson! Apparently they went with the most unknown of unknowns for this, click away my pretties. Updated with announcement pics...

Alex Billington over at Firstshowing has tweeted that Sony have revealed our new Spider-man, and its Andrew Garfield!

Alex confirmed to me that the news is indeed official, and its now as I type being reported by the trades. So, major turnaround there. Garfield's most mainstream role is probably in Terry Gilliam's Imaginarium Of Dr Pernassus. He also starred in Lions For Lambs.

Here are the highlights from the press release..

Director Marc Webb says..

“Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, President of Columbia Pictures said..

“Spider-Man is a classic superhero -- a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker.”

Producer Avi Arad added,

“I’m incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future.”

Producer Laura Ziskin said,

“We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb’s direction. We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men. In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen.”

So, what do you make of this? I have never seen the guy act but apparently he has some chops. I think he looks the part anyway..at least more so than Hutcherson.

Update: Sorry, I felt the need to add this. I just realized who this guy played in Red Riding. He was almost unrecognizable in a wig and sideburns!. But this dude has serious ability folks. If you want some type of gauge as to how good an actor he is, check out Channel 4's Red Riding trilogy online or on dvd.

Here are the announcement pics with Garfield, Director Marc Webb, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin...

Here is the official press release from Sony

Sony Pictures has officially announced that Andrew Garfield has landed the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in director Marc Webb's Untitled Spider-Man Film! The film focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises. The action adventure will open in 3D and 2D theaters on July 3, 2012.

Here's the official press release:

After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012. The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Today's confirmation culminates what has been one of the most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory. Bloggers, pop culture speculators, and everyday fans have pored over and analyzed every conceivable online rumor in an attempt to discover the identity of the next actor to play Peter Parker. Garfield will immediately begin preparing for the coveted role.

The Spider-Man franchise is one of the most successful in film history and the three previous motion pictures have collectively grossed more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office.

On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, "Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor's work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker."

Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, President of Columbia Pictures said, "Spider-Man is a classic superhero -- a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker."

Producer Avi Arad added, "I'm incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future."

Producer Laura Ziskin said, "We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb’s direction. We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men. In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen."

The selection of Garfield was revealed at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming films from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Garfield is fast becoming one of the most respected and sought-after young actors working in the industry today. In a short career, spanning only five years, he has already been directed by, and starred alongside, some of the greatest names and received a BAFTA for a role that won him international praise.

Garfield most recently worked with director David Fincher on the upcoming film The Social Network. He previously starred for Spike Jonze on his robot love story I'm Here, which premiered at Sundance this year. He plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go, due for release later this year.

Other notable screen credits include Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus playing opposite Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and the late Heath Ledger, Robert Redford’s Lions For Lambs, where he starred alongside Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep; Revolution Films' "Red Riding Trilogy – 1974" directed by Julian Jarrold, where he lead a stellar cast including Rebecca Hall and David Morrissey, and his unforgettable portrayal of a young ex-con in John Crowley's "Boy A," for which he earned the best actor BAFTA in 2008.

Garfield’s career began in theatre and in 2006 his performances in "Beautiful Thing" (Sound Space/Kit Productions), "The Overwhelming," and "Burn / Chatroom / Citizenship" (Royal National Theatre) won him the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard awards and the Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer at the Critics Circle Theatre Awards. Other notable theatre credits include "Romeo and Juliet" (Manchester Royal Exchange) and "Kes" (Manchester Royal Exchange), for which he received the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the Manchester Evening News Awards 2004.

Well, now I have to watch the movie. Andrew Garfield is one of my favorite young actors. I really think he'll be a great Peter Parker.

Plus, he's really cute :')

Huh. I can't pretend that I'm happy about this as I always liked Aaron Johnson and Logan Lerman for the role. However, I can't criticise this guy (even though I don't think he looks right for Peter) as I've never seen him in anything!

Perhaps if one of my favourites had been cast I'd be a little more excited but right now my attitude remains the same - [frick] the reboot. :)

What I'm wondering is, since this is a reboot, and we're supposed to be getting the Lizard, will it be Dylan Baker from Raimi's Spideyworld, or a complete recast. Just curious is all. I don't think this picture is going to make as much as Raimi's Spider-man films, sorry Sony.

so they might not go back to marvel?

Not that familiar with him. I was hoping for either Jamie or Josh. This just went 360 degrees on me. Thanks for the news RorMachine, I guess at least it's now over. But if Peter is already cast, then it will only be a matter of time until they start to cast Gwen and I'm working on an editorial as to how Taylor Momsen's casting could affect her career and the film, as well as why she would be good for the role. Just when I swore to take a day off... I feel both relieved and sad at the same time. Hopefully my brain is ready for the writing after my hours long brake.

P.S.

I just hope they dye his bloody hair...

Ah, who am I kidding? As if I'm going to go and see my favourite comic book character completely ruined in the same year as the release of The Avengers! Once again, [frick] the reboot and [frick] the 27 year old actor who'll be playing a high school kid. Sony are now as bad as Fox in my eyes.

Let’s give this actor a chance before the fan boys and girls start ripping on him. Start blasting him if he sucks in the film. If he does a great job then we will probably see him in a couple of sequels. Go Andrew Garfield!!!

StuckInPanels - 7/1/2010, 5:36 PM
@Timerider...they haven't said it will be the Lizard..yet

@Conform...you rather have a crappy actor?

@Joey Misfit...they don't hate the fan base, they picked an unknown because it means we won't see the ACTOR as Spider-man, but Peter Parker as Spider-man...They all said the same thing about Reeves and Keaton and they are the best in their respective roles as Superman and Batman

JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 7/1/2010, 5:40 PM
And what a false load of BS in those qoutes! I wonder who they hired to write that PR propaganda!? Why don't they just admit that this whole high school reboot (along with, ugh, 3D) is nothing more than a ploy to reel in the Twilight crowd while simultaneously shitting all over those of us who read the comic books? Am I judging this movie too soon? No. Not with a director like Webb and an actor like this in the title role. :(

You can always tell the ones grif really believes in because he elaborates. I like that one, grif.

Huh. Hoped they'd get somebody younger. He must have something since he's almost and unknown.

Torn between wanting it to fail so bad Marvel can get the property back and wanting to see a live action Spectacular Spider-man movie.

@josh...we all have our fears...yours a good to bring up that they seem to be aiming toward the twilight crowd but perhaps they promise to keep true to the fans in some ways. I keep myself optimistic with every news that comes out. I personally want to see whos gonna be the villain and will the costume be different style and all other aspects. Til then lets hope for the best :)

NightAvenger: Maybe. But I guess I'll never know as I can promise you that I will NOT go and watch this [frick]ing reboot bud! The only thing that would have saved it for me would have been a good casting choice...after checking this guy out on YouTube, I can safely say that he's one of the worst actors they could have gone for! :(

@JoshW, I disagree with you.People who read the comics know that the story starts out in high school.People who read Ultimate Spider-Man also know that. Both incarnations came before Twilight.Starting him off in high school is making a faithful adaptation.I don't understand why people don't see that.Usually fans are outraged when a movie deviates from the comic, yet I see people getting up in arms about this and First Class.

@Joey..as I said to pig...his biological age is 27 and will be 29 when released but he his physical look shows he is younger so that has its advantage. Even Aaron Johnson of Kick-ass was much older than a High School student and yet he was able to pull it off.
