Ben Affleck WAS In The Running To Direct Superman

Ben Affleck WAS In The Running To Direct Superman

More reboot news. Or none news as the case may be. But it seems Affleck(riding high on the success of The Town) was in line to tackle The Man Of Steel next..

According to Heatvision..

Word began to leak last week of directors who were meeting or will meet with Nolan and Warner brass for the relaunch of one of Hollywood's biggest franchises. Duncan Jones (“Moon”), Jonathan Liebesman ("Battle: Los Angeles"), Matt Reeves (“Cloverfield,” this Friday’s “Let Me In”), Tony Scott and Zack Snyder are on the list.

And so was Affleck, who is extremely popular at Warners after making “The Town,” a critical and box-office hit. But according to insiders, the actor-director -- who, ironically, once portrayed the actor who played Superman on TV in "Hollywoodland" -- met about "Superman" last week but is no longer pursuing it.

That sounds like he passed on it to me. Affleck doesn't have too much in the works right now(that we know about) so maybe he wasn't crazy about the script/plot? Who knows. Anyway, I know like me you must be a bit sick of hearing who might/may have directed it and just want to know who will. But I found this interesting. Affleck is the 7th director(if the short list is accurate of course) to be mentioned in connection with this. Are WB and Chris Nolan just going down a list of who had a hit recently? Granted the names are all pretty good to great talents, but I hope they are more concerned with who is best suited to this particular character than who they think can deliver a box office draw.

it feels like we have to wait and see who Chris Nolan and WB pick. some reason i feel its going to be a director that no one thought of.

Maybe he didn't want to have to deal with all the fanboys. I don't blame him.

He can direct movies well, thats true. But we can`t forget that he almost married Jennifer Lopez, which shows poor judgement.

affleck should pass. he's still a new director. he should stick to the crime movies he's good at before he does something risky and different.

The only way he could do it is if he made Superman a working class guy from Boston. He`d also have to be fighting tough economic times in stead of Lex Luthor. Its all Affleck knows!

I'm starting to wonder if WB/Nolan's "vision" for the reboot is scaring off prospective directors...

That's an awful big leap from the smaller movies he's done so far. Probably intimidated him a little which i can understand. Plus he's finally on a comeback and the last thing he probably wants to do is screw up sOmething big like this and disappear for another decade.

Daredevil directing a Superman movie? Bizarro-trip. LOL!

Glad he's not being considered anymore.

I think he took himself out because of the added pressure he will receive if directing MOS. His career was crap with Gigili, he made his come back and a bad MOS movie will sink him back. So perhaps he wanted to avoid any chances. Any director taking the film will be under the spot light till the premier.

Well I think he might have done well with it because he would have brought Kevin Smith on to write... but it seems that Chris Nolan is writing it so it wasn't gunna work out. oh well.

[frick] Affleck. WB cannot [frick] up the MOS again with a weak-link like Affleck. I want them to make careful choices with their casting and director. They [frick]ed Superman over once already...let's hope they get their act together this time around.

I saw The Town today and it was one of the best movies I've seen this year. I'm really disappointed that he passed up on directing this but if it means that he'll carry on starring in, and helming, movies like that and Gone Baby Gone, I'm not too bothered! :)

I just realized that when it comes to acting, Ben Affleck and Brended Fraser are the same. Both are really good with drama, but suck at pretty much everything else. I wish Hollywoodland had focused more on Reeves' life and death, and less on Adrian Brody trying to be noticed for something other than a strong resemblance to Tucan Sam. I know this was off topic, but it reminded me of that movie.

Well there is a first time for everything I suppose. But frankly I would bet on the latter.

What's wrong with going after talented directors who have recently made critically positive movies? Would it be better if Uwe Boll was on this list?

I wonder if Superheroes have left a bad taste in his mouth after DD.

The Town was a well directed and well crafted film. This is where his talent lies... Not so much in acting, though he isn't bad. I just think he's a better director.

Good find, Ror! Like you, I get tired of speculation, but this is interesting in light of The Town's successs.

He would be waist of time now because he is associated with Daredevil.
Without the Daredevil history . I would think he would be fine.
But.....there's a history.
