First Official Hobbit Pics Show Martin Freeman As Bilbo & Ian McKellen As Gandalf!

Entertainment Weekly have unveiled our first glimpse at both Bilbo Baggins and a younger looking Gandalf in these images from Peter Jackson's upcoming LOTR prequel. Check em out..

Thanks to EW, we have our first official looks at both Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Ian McKellen as Gandalf The Grey. You can also see some of the Dwarves in the background of the first pic. I can't be sure but I think the closet one in black might be Thorin? There are also quotes from director Peter Jackson under each pic..

"He fits the ears, and he's got some very nice feet", Jackson says of his Bilbo. "I think he's got the biggest hobbit feet we've had so far. They're a little bit hard to walk in, but he's managed to figure out the perfect hobbit gait."

''He's in fantastic form,'' Peter Jackson says of McKellan. ''In a way, his role in The Hobbit has more technical difficulties than Lord of the Rings did, because he has scenes with 14 smaller characters — obviously the dwarves and the hobbit are shorter... I remember saying to him [laughs], ''Look, this isn't Waiting for Godot or King Lear. This is The Hobbit. This is the real thing.''

''There's no way you can pace yourself for shoots like these,'' Jackson says. ''When we were going through the schedule for The Hobbit, I felt a terrible drop in my stomach when I saw that we'd be shooting for 254 days. We're only 12 days short of The Lord of the Rings even though we're only doing two movies. When I saw that, I had to sort of pick myself up off the floor and carry on.''

I think these are great. I was a bit worried about how Freeman would look as Bilbo, not anymore. Lets hope we start to see more from Jackson's prequel to what many consider(me included) to be the greatest movie trilogy of all time..and yes, I am counting the original Star Wars movies.

I tell ya', Ian McKellen is the un-aging old man, I think he's capped out on his ability to age because he was meant to play Gandolf in any and all adaptations.

Good stuff, indeed! Can't wait!

No change in Gandalf, just the way I wanted it. But the look on his face is that he is thinking, there is no way Michael Fassbender taking this role from me! lol

Freeman looks great as a younger Bilbo

Fantastic to see Peter Jackson directing again

I think it'd be cool if they pulled a Star Wars with this. The new version of Return of the Jedi features Hayden Christensen as ghost Anakin. There's a flashback in one of the LOTR movies to young Bilbo (played by old Bilbo actor) finding the ring. I think it'd be cool to replace that scene with the new version of the scene that will take place in this movie. It's pretty much inevitable that there will be some super Tolkien box set combining the Hobbit and LOTR movies so they could include both the original and altered versions.

A trailer would really have to blow my mind to convince me to see see this movie despite how much I loved the book. I hate Martin Freeman. (and a lot of the other cast members too)

Freeman did annoy me in the office a bit, and in Hitchhiker's..but he is a pretty damn good fit for this role so I'm sure he will pull it off. Otherwise, no reservations. This is Peter Jackson. I seriously doubt he will do anything to taint his LOTR legacy.

ScottPilgrim: Yes, because not automatically saying I think something looks "epic" or "amazing" based on a handful of pictures and what I personally consider to be a fairly uninteresting cast makes me a troll. Riiiight... :P

I'm not even saying this movie will be bad, but I can't pretend to be all that excited to watch a 2 and a half hour movie with an actor I despise in the lead role, lol. :) Loved the LOTR trilogy (though a bigger fan of the books) and I'm sure this will be another quality instalment.

@BIGBMH - remember the fall out from Lucas tinkering with the original ROTJ??! A no go for LOTR for sure.

@RorMachine - didn't we all think the same right before The Phantom Menace?

Bilbo and Gandalf both look great. I think that is Thorin in the first pic. I have total faith in the sets for this to look absolutely perfect, just as Jackson did in LOTR. I'm really wanting to see The Hobbit be as good as the LOTR films were.

Cool, I wish I could see the dwarves better though. Gandalf looks exactly the same! It's been 12 years since the filmed FOTR.

Is it me or does Peter Jackson look like he's putting on the weight again?

star wars, matrix, pirates o t carebean, spiderman..... lol...... there are some good trilogys, but I have to admit ....that I''m really looking forward to another adventure of the miniature-bigfeet....... and I hope to see some old faces like legolas...... may the adventures continue....
CapFan79
CapFan79 - 6/23/2011, 8:36 AM
I agree it's probably the best trilogy only because its far more consistent across all films.

Star Wars ended a bit weak with ROTJ compared to ESB. Godfather III isn't horrible but tainted the perfect series. Indiana Jones is pretty consistent to me but as far as drama is concerned only Raiders really has any.

The Matrix sucks. Only the 1st film is great. The Matrix sequels are as if the original Star Wars was followed by The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones!
