Joe Johnston took some time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions about his highly anticipated take on Captain America. He talks again about some of the movie's influences, as well as a possible sequel, after credits scene and seems to express an interest in seeing a Winter Soldier movie..

CBM I was wondering if you had been approached to direct the Cap sequel and if not, is it something you might be interested in doing?

JJ There's been no discussion about the sequel to date. I would be interested if the story is as unique as Captain America. That's a tall order, but if Markus and McFeely are writing it there's a very good chance it will be great. There are other interesting characters in the Marvel universe, for instance, the Winter Soldier, aka Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes.

I think many would be interested in a solo outing for Bucky/Winter Soldier since his popularity has soared in the comics recently. We know that this movie, like all of Marvel's previous ones, will tie into The Avengers. We have seen some set pics of Chris Evans speaking to Sam Jackson's Nic Fury and many believe that this will be the after credits scene. Was it difficult to come up with a way of leading into The Avengers given that Captain America is a period movie?

The scene between Chris Evans and Nick Fury was cut together from AVENGERS footage, so I had nothing to do with it other than agree to put it after the credits.

Cool, thanks for confirming! Early footage screenings have drawn comparisons with your previous movie The Rocketeer as well as Indiana Jones. Was that the vibe you were going for?

I mentioned using Raiders of the Lost Ark as a template for the period because it still feels completely contemporary and timeless even today. That's remarkable for a 30 year old film. I did not have The Rocketeer in mind at all, although at the twentieth anniversary screening I did notice a few general and a couple of very specific similarities. Totally coincidental, of course.

What can we expect from you next, anything in the pipeline?

I have no plans other than to spend part of the summer at a dinosaur dig in Montana, something I have missed the last two summers.

Huge thanks to Joe Johnston for taking the time to do this interview, and for the article pic. Captain America: TFA stars Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Stanley Tucci and Hugo Weaving, and hits theaters July 22, 2011.

Agreed! Great stuff. I find it interesting that it sounds like he isn't interested in continuing. At least that's the vibe I got.

@Nephillim I think it would be cool for an after credits scene to include all of the members. I think it'd get a lot of people psyched for the Avengers.

Hey maybe the post credit scene won't be just a 2 minute thing, maybe they're going to stretch it to 5 or 10 minutes since this is the last Marvel movie till Avengers. But then again, if they were to do that, why not add it into the movie unless that just doesn't fit with the concept and theme of the movie's ending.

He says in this interview that he had nothing to do with the Cap/Fury scenes filmed in NYC but we know Johnston was present and directed that whole bit. What gives?

@Gmoney, I think Wheldon directed it.

Winter Soldier!

Well, Nick Fury is meeting Cap after credits. Wonder how the actual ending of the movie will be, then.

SERIOUSLY? That's the after credits scene? That's kind of a bummer. I agree with Neph. That's a very integral scene. LET'S NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE GREEN LANTERN DID!!

Also, I was kind of hoping the after credits scene would be Red Skull getting teleported to Asgard via the cosmic cube, only to meet a very pissed off Loki.

Part of me is a bit suspicious though. He said that he had nothing to do with the after credits scene. BUT JOE JOHNSTON... YOU WERE THERE FILMING IT!!!

I have a feeling that he's thinking of another scene entirely.

you guys don't know anything about the after credit scene, how can you complain? all we know is it involves Fury and Cap. its not like you guys know anything about what they're saying.

@ knossis

its already known that Cap will start in present times, and end in present times. so its safe to assume that in the beginning, Cap gets unfrozen, attacks the scientists thinking they're nazi's in disguise, and then when they subdue him it flashes back to WWII. That would be the best way to do it, and from all accounts, thats what it sounds like they'll do. I doubt very seriously they'll leave something as important as unfreezing him until the after credit scenes.

I would love to see Johnston come back. I loved The Rocketeer and so far the feel of Caps movie is very similar. In the end alot of it will hinge on the musical score.

Johnston was photographed standing around in the Fury/Cap scene you are all refering to as the "after crdits scene." The man says he had nothing to do with the after credits scene, which means all of you and Johnston are talking about two different scenes. Which means it was probably a re shoot or added scene, nothing else.

I really doesn't seem so difficult to understand.

95% of the comments on this site are speculation. You all get your panties in a bunch, rip on each other and all think you know everything. It's really entertaining to read the posts of some of the greatest minds to ever gather on a single website. Keep up the good work morons!
