So we(or most of us) have probably all watched the bootleg trailer for TDKR that hit earlier on. If you haven't, best not read on as I discuss the footage in detail.
The teaser descriptions turned out to be spot on, aside from a bit of silly mixing up on the title cards and the dude that sent it out thinking Gordon said "Humor Me" instead of "You Must". Ok. So what can we tell from the footage? Well nothing definite of course, but it seems to me that by the way Gordon and Wayne are talking that not only does Gordon know that Wayne is Batman, but that he has clearly hung up the cape. The ending of
The Dark Knight suggested that Batman may go into exile while being hunted by the police but this is something else entirely. Bruce Wayne has given up being Batman.
Anyone who has read Frank Miller's
The Dark Knight Returns will know that this is reminiscent of that story's opening. As Gordon and Wayne talk about the old times, Wayne is determined that Batman is dead and will stay that way. Then as crime escalates and he can no longer take it, he returns to strike fear into Gotham's criminals once more as Batman. The catalyst for this in Miller's story was a huge, incredibly powerful mutant. In Nolan's movie it appears to be Bane. And instead of targeting Gotham's citizens he appears to be going after those close to Batman(as evident by Gordon's hospitalized state). Could Bane also have figured out Batman's true identity? He does in the comic. Will Nolan take some more influence from
The Dark Knight Returns? We don't really get any more from the teaser aside from a voiceover from Liam Neeson's Rhas Al Ghul which suggests that the spoilers that leaked a while ago about Bane being a member of The League of Shadows are also accurate. The same spoilers gave us some indication of Catwoman's role too but were wrong about the part Joe Gordon Levitt would play so who knows what is suspect in the rest of the details.
The final shot in the teaser is Bane lumbering into shot as Batman back's off. Details of their appearance are hard to make out in the low quality footage but Bane certainly looks pretty massive. Just the camera angle or will Nolan use some trickery to make Tom Hardy appear a lot bigger?
Anyway, we shall find out soon enough. For the meantime, what did those of you who watched the bootleg teaser thing from what you could make out?
