Star Trek VS Star Wars: William Shatner Finally Settles It!

Star Trek VS Star Wars: William Shatner Finally Settles It! Star Trek VS Star Wars: William Shatner Finally Settles It!

It is the age old debate among sci-fi fans. Now the first Captain of the Starship Enterprise settles it once and for all. Guess which side he lands on?..

On any forum, blog or site on the net you will see it. "I'm a Star Wars man", "I've always been a Trekkie", "I like both but I prefer..". Despite being vastly different in so many ways both franchises have become rivals for many a fanboy's affections over the years. Now in the below vid Captain James T Kirk himself William Shatner gives his take on which is better. It's not hard to guess where his loyalties lie but whether you agree with him or not, he makes some every valid points..

I'm not going to paraphrase what he says because it's well worth taking the 3 minutes to watch yourselves. Personally I have always fallen into the "I like both but prefer Star Wars" camp. In saying that I can't actually argue with anything Shatner says here. Whether that make Star Trek "better" I don't know. I will say this though, J.J Abrams recent reboot was infinitely better on every level than those excuses for prequels we got from George Lucas. But that's just my take, what do you guys think?

Ask me when I was ten, 12 years ago, I'd say Star Wars all the way. But now that I'm older, and have watched all the Star Trek series. I have to say I'm more of a Star Trek guy myself for many of the reasons ol' Captain Kirk says in that video.

Star Trek needs a CGI series like Clone Wars or Starship Troopers, so they can freely adapt the outlandish Star Trek books from the 1980´s which were very creative.

As much as I love star wars, have to concede to Trek, it's more forward thinking than Wars. And plus, you don't see endless special editions of Trek with new special FX and movie ruining "NOOOOOOO!" x2. And at any point can you imagine Gene Roddenberry plotting against his fans, rubbing his hands together, cackling maniacally whilst sitting on a throne made from our money? I'm not saying he didn't make a fortune, but he didn't do it by punishing his fans.

Ror, is there any way we could get a summary? I can't view the video...

I love the Star Wars, but honestly its about as ""sci-fi" as Harry Potter. It doesn't deal with the science of its world very much, at least not in the films, its all magic with a sci-fi label. At the same time, that is why it is more revered by the general public. Magic wins over science every time when it comes to shows/movies. We all grow up on fairy tales, so to the general public magic is more acceptable than sci-fi which is still considered very nerdy.

I can't help but to like Star Trek more because there is more to it. 6 Star Wars movies compared to 20+ seasons and 11 movies of Star Trek...

Honorable mentions to Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica!

Not to mention Star Trek actually dealt with science and social issues...

I still very much enjoy Star Wars, but when my father turned me on to Star Trek it became a whole new animal. Star Wars just seems like a childish fantasy that can never be reached after watching Star Trek. It's a shame that there are people out there that won't watch either because they're afraid of the geek label that would be placed on them.

Star Wars dealt with more philosophical issues than Star trek did. The Jedi Code is a representation of our very own enlightenment and ancient Greek philosophies of saying how is it moral to live. The Force being a universal being, and how evil will destroy itself even at its peak. Then you have the human side of star wars with the relationship between Han and Leia and Luke growing from being an adventure seeking kid to becoming an adult. Shatner is just jealous that Harrison Ford's Han solo is more bad ass than Shatner's Kirk

@WorldsGreatestdetective - "Star Wars dealt with more philosophical issues than Star trek did."

Have you ever seen Star Trek...? It dealt with everything from racism to sexism to classism and beyond... if there's human condition, Star Trek has touched on it...

I would agree in part with what he says. I don't deny that SW is spectacle rather than story, but I do still prefer the universe of star wars. To say it's derivative is a bit of a jab though. They're very different realities in the way they're presented. Trek is a hypothetical future, Wars is basically a fantasy film, just in a space setting rather than the usual middle ages fare. It owes a lot to more classical periods in history.

Star Wars by a hair. SW prequels werent that good and the new Star Trek (09) was great.

And if there is a babe within 200 lightyears, Kirk has touched on that too...

My son James T and I both preffer Trek, but the original Star Wars wasn't bad either. At least it wasn't, until Lucas decided to change things up. Again, and again... Hell, that just goes to show even Lucas didn't like it, he keeps trying to fix it!

I dunno.

Both have similarities, but I think they are vastly different in many ways, and should be regarded on their own merits. Personally I like both, admittedly I have seen the Star Wars OT more than I have most of Star Trek.

But the key here is that Star Wars is an adventure told in three parts, where as Star Trek in all it philosophy and such have new stories dealing with a variety of issues.

It all comes down to what you like, and what you fancy.

Including the prequels. I don't know why people say they sucked. AOTC was crap except for Jango, but I really liked Ep I and III.

I hate the "vs." thing because I like both of them, but if I had to pick I'd choose Trek.

The best of Star Trek: TNG seasons 3-7, DS9 seasons 4-7, Enterprise seasons 3 & 4, The Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, First Contact, Star Trek (2009)

The best of Star Wars: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi (minus the Ewoks) and Revenge of the Sith (kick ass battle scenes)

As much as I like them Babylon 5 is far and away better than either.

Damn someone let themselves boldly go.

Anyway you expect Shatner to say anything else? Come on.

True sci fi fans like both. Those that have to chose one or the other like its a retarded Democrats vs Republican debate are dorky nerds. Sure one can lke one more than the other but to me they are significantly different I sont waste the time comparing them.

Star Trek all the way. The big difference between Star Trek and Star Wars is, Star Trek is about the human condition. Star Wars is just a high tech extension of the cheap Saturday afternoon movie serials of the 40s and 50s, which is what inspired Lucas in the first place. They were meant to be cheap and fluffy with no real substance, and that’s exactly what he accomplished with Star Wars. The human condition took a back seat to computers and special effects. Lucas made the human actors and the film crew disposable. He proved it by constantly tinkering with his movies. In many cases he replaced or omitted the hard work, and contributions put in by the actors and crew members. The same people that helped make Star Wars a success today. Yeah Lucas is an ass!
