Joel Schumacher Would Have Had Nicolas Cage Play Scarecrow In Batman Triumphant

Had the infamous director got to inflict another Batman movie on us he wanted, and was speaking to, Nicolas Cage for Scarecrow. Check out what Schumacher had to say about it to The Playlist..

Ah, it could have all been so different. Apparently WB were so confident in what they saw in the early stages of Joel Schumacher's work on Batman And Robin that they had already thought about getting another movie started after it called Batman Triumphant. Word is it would have featured Batman and Robin going up against the Scarecrow, and featured a cameo from the still under contract Jack Nicholson as Batman suffered from fear toxin induced hallucinations of The Joker. Thankfully we were all spared that but speaking to The Playlist Schumacher reveals who he would have had play Scarecrow and also speaks about the pretty much unanimously despised Batman And Robin..

“I was supposed to do a fifth one, I was talking to Nic Cage about playing the Scarecrow. I had begged the studio for [the Frank Miller comic] ‘The Dark Knight [Returns],’ but they wanted a family friendly, toyetic thing.”

“And I gave up a lot of money, but, no regrets. I have awards for selling more Batman toys than anyone in the world.” In regards to “Batman and Robin,” he was convinced he made “the wrong choice” but says, “I did my job. It was more family friendly and it sold a lot of toys, and it supported the Warner Bros. stores. But I did disappoint a lot of fans.”

Yes it did Joel, because it was a load of shit. Could you imagine if it had of been an adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns he had got his hands on? But to play Devil's advocate maybe he was told to up the high camp and cheese factor by the studio. After all Batman Forever was pretty bad but it had it's moments. Might Schumacher have made a good stab at Batman if he had been left to his own devices? I don't know, but I must say I am glad he didn't get another chance to try. How about Nic Cage, could you have seen him menace Batman in a sack hood?

Uh....now I'm even more happy that the film wasn't made. Thank God for Chris Nolan.

Words cannot describe how bad this movie is. The director, Joel Schumacher, gets much of the blame, deservedly show. Why does Batman need nipples on his batsuit? To remind everyone that he has them? To make his foes laugh themselves to death? Does he twist them and lasers shoot out? Does he use them as a flask? And here's my other question: why do Batman and Robin have nipples on their suits...but Batgirl doesn't? That makes no sense. Have I really spent all this space on artificial nipples? Wow...

Maybe Sean Penn should play the Scarecrow. You know, cause he has the eyes of a caged animal!

Whether or not the studio forced his hand, he took the money and raped the Batman franchise. Now, the stink of it will never leave him, and rightfully so.

- Thats 2, mate...
But yeah B&R sucked major balls, and for my money the single worst thing about it was that ridiculous voice Uma Thurman put on as Ivy... Makes me cringe even to this day...

Talk about dodging a bullet...

The part about Nick Cage as the scarecrow may have been able to work in the right setting but not coming off of the path that Batman & Robin was blazing with Schumacher at the helm. I don't even want to imagine the psychedelic crapfest that would have happened during the hallucination scenes.

Like others have said, he needs to stop passing the blame. If he knew WB wanted to do a 2 hour toy commercial they could have picked anyone, he signed up for it and should have walked if he didn't want to be associated with the end result..At least have the balls to say that you did it for the paycheck or something.

Well at least he did Phone Booth.

I remember reading many years ago that Ewan McGregor was supposedly up for the part of scarecrow at the time.

Did I dream this??

Good god what a huge success that would have been!... NOOOOT!;)

Schumacher is a great director when it comes to movies which are not based in comic books! I think he has learned the hard way what his mistakes were with those films!;)
Seriously when im looking at Batman Forever and Batman & Robin i cant believe this guy made movies like Tigerland, Phone Booth, Flatliners, A Time To Kill, The Client, 8MM, Flawless, Veronica Guerin, The Phantom of the Opera and one of my favorite vampire films ever The Lost Boys.

Blood Creek (In other countries Town Creek) was decent film too. Thou mostly because of Michael Fassbender´s menacing performance as the nazi occultist.

Schumacher gets an over-inflated bad rap. yep B&R is a disaster, everybody knows it. But do you really think he made the movie in a vacuum? no way. tons of studio pressure and demands...don't discount how it feels to be trapped. Sure, he made bad decisions and as the director he bares responsibility. but he also made flicks like "Lost Boys" and "Tigerland" so the guy HAS talent.

meanwhile the WB has made crap like "Catwoman" and "Green Lantern." ...I get that executives come and go, but who is the real problem here? ..for my money, it's a studio that mishandles its properties and should thank god every day for Nolan.

Nic Cage would have been great as Scarecrow... as much as it would be possible to be great in a Joel Schumacher film. Wasn't Madonna being considered to play Harley Quinn (as the Joker's long lost daughter) for Batman Triumphant? I also recall that Man-Bat would have also been featured in one of the fear toxin hallucination scenes.

Thank god. We didn't need any of Cages cheesy over-acting in a Batfilm, though he would have fit right along side Shumachers villians.

And yes its funny how hes trying to pass the buck. Studios fault? Either it was your doing or you compromised your directoral ethics and made a crap movie. In either case your in the wrong, buddy. I know its hard to say no to your boss, but there's a time when you realize that what you are doing is only in the interest of making movie (hence the Toys) and you can either go with it, collect your money and deal with the backlash or take a stand. Shumacher was a successful director before Batman so he could have easily passed on the project and went to something if he really cared. Raimi took a stand and took a bit of slack, but we didn't get a shittier Spiderman movie because he did since the studios were nit-picking everything he did. Thank god he did.

No director is fully responsible for everything what happens in the film. There is the producers who control everything cause its all made with their money. If they say we do it that way or we are not doing it at all thats the final word. The director has two choices quit or do what they say.
