INTERVIEW: Christopher Daniels Talks Comics, CBM's & Which Character He Would Like To Play In A Movie

EXCLUSIVE: Pro-Wrestler Christopher Daniels is a huge comic book fan. Here he talks about how Wrestling and comic culture meet in the middle, as well as revealing his desire to play a certain mouthy mercenary on the big screen..

Christopher Daniels (formerly known as the "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels) is considered by many (me included) to be one of the best all round pro-wrestlers in the business. He has wrestled for numerous promotions both big and small, earning the mantle "The King Of The Indies" for his work with and championing of various independent promotions the world over. He also happens to be a big comic book fan and took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions about appearing at this year's SDCC, his favorite CBM's, whether he has any intentions to pursue an acting career and more.

MC: I believe that you are a big comic book fan(X-Men in particular:). You along with some pals from TNA appeared at this year's SDCC. How was that experience?

CD: I had a blast, and I know my friends that wrestled that day did too. I have friends that work at Marvel Comics, so it's always fun to see them and the work that they are doing. I had some personalized sketches done by artists like Todd Nauck and Mark Brooks, and I got to speak in depth with Peter David, one of the best writers out there. In addition, Eric Young, Frankie Kazarian, and I all had comic character-themed wrestling gear for our three-way match at the TNA event, so it was cool for me to come to the ring dressed as Magneto.

There seems to be quite a few comic book fans among pro wrestlers. Some even incorporate this into their gimmicks etc. Do you think this is due to being drawn into the sort of "geek culture" that is seen as being associated with both wrestling and comic books today?

Well, I know many of the guys in the locker room that have read since they were kids, the same way they've been wrestling fans since then. For me, I felt that the same sort of storytelling was present in both comics and wrestling, the entire "good vs. evil" paradigm, and that appealed to me as a young reader, and stayed with me as I grew up.

As far as the movie side of it goes, have you been keeping up with the recent batch of comic book movies? Any favorites?

I was very happy with the X-Men First Class movie, despite the fact that it differed so much from the comic of the same name. I was surprised by how much it tied into the Bryan Singer movies, and I really enjoyed Kevin Bacon's portrayal of Sebastain Shaw. I also enjoyed both Thor and Captain America, and I can't wait to see how The Avengers movie turns out.

We are seeing more and more wrestlers cross over into movies these days, is that something you might like to do some day?

I'd love an opportunity to act in the future, but I understand how difficult it is to break into that field, and as much as I'd like being a professional wrestler to open doors for me, I'm realistic enough to know that it'll take a bit more than that to get me onscreen. So for now I'm content with my wrestling career, but as for the future...

If you could play any comic book character on the big screen who would it be?

I think I'd play a pretty nifty Deadpool. I feel like I'm a bit of a wiseass, just like Wade Wilson, and I'm sure all my friends would concur.

Many thanks to Christopher for the interview. Be sure to visit his website: Fallenangelchristopherdaniels.com, follow him on Twitter: @facdaniels, and tune in to Impact Wrestling every Thursday to see him in action.

..... Anyways!
AC1 - 10/23/2011, 5:59 AM
That's cool, it's nice to hear a wrestler who's actually quite down to Earth and sensible, you don't get that much these days (which is why I never really got into watching wrestling)
"as much as I'd like being a professional wrestler to open doors for me, I'm realistic enough to know that it'll take a bit more than that to get me onscreen" seems he understands that wrestlers turned actors dont seem to have a good track record, and that he knows if he were to make the jump from the ring to the big screen he'd need to put in a lot of hard work to learn real acting.
maskman0 - 10/23/2011, 6:01 AM
I had no idea who Christopher Daniels is until I read this. He seems like a cool guy and a big fan.
RorMachine - 10/23/2011, 6:36 AM
For those unfamiliar with the man's work

AutobotCommander84 - 10/23/2011, 6:56 AM
Wow, I've never heard of a wrestler who likes comic books. THIS IS AWESOME!
mikesinuman - 10/23/2011, 7:29 AM
he can play ATROCITUS.
SCOURGE - 10/23/2011, 7:33 AM
Rob Van Damm is also a big comic book guy. He owns (or at least used too) a couple of comic book shops.
RorMachine - 10/23/2011, 7:51 AM
There are lots of em. All of those TNA guys, plus CM Punk, RVD, Rey Mysterio etc.
SCURVYDOG619 - 10/23/2011, 8:19 AM
Rey has done matches dressed as whatever comic-book themed movie is about to come out,nd is something he's done as long ago as his WCW days where he appeared dressed as the Phantom in one of his epic battles with Eddie Guerrerro[RIP]. Cm Punk is practically a hypeman for anything Ed Brubaker writes, and tells his followers so through Twitter. Raven wrote a Spider-Man one-shot,as`well. Whether or not all this is the reason Ben Grimm was a pro wrestler in the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation in issues of the Fantastic Four is,of couse,debatable...lol
GreenLanternsLight33 - 10/23/2011, 8:28 AM
Christopher Daniels and A.J. Styles have had some of the best matches in the history of wrestling. He is an awesome wrestler but his mike skills totally suck! I agree with maybe a voiceless character but no way could he play Deadpool.
Seven23 - 10/23/2011, 8:36 AM
He could be play as juggernaut.
Zell9 - 10/23/2011, 8:50 AM
also pictured tv champ eric young on the far left and frankie kazarian on the far right no clue who the other 2 guys are.
DarthTesla - 10/23/2011, 9:36 AM
Wow, awesome to see the Fallen Angel on CBM.

He just needs to do himself a favor and stay away from TNA forever.

Glad he's a comics fan.
marvel72 - 10/23/2011, 9:55 AM
cm punk best wrestler working today.
Toxyk - 10/23/2011, 11:04 AM
@marvel72 you must have never seen Chris Hero. But Fallen Angel would be a great Daredevil as well as Deadpool.TNA/Impact fans already know EY is pretty mu8ch an on screen comic character himself.
Julesimanerd - 10/23/2011, 11:05 AM
he seems like a good guy. i normally hate wrestlers as actors. but he seems like he really loves comics. but i don't know if i want to see him in a cbm soon
Thelastdalek - 10/23/2011, 11:10 AM
@EasterBunnyKiller

Are you one of those it's fake so it sucks people by anny chance?

Any way Daniels is one of my faves (he's one of the few good things about TNA at the moment).
Thelastdalek - 10/23/2011, 11:13 AM
@ELgUaSoN

Belieave it or not theres a 13 year old girl who can do that in Japan whos been wrestling since she was 8.

They must have some [frick]ed up chiled safety laws.
MaddMonkk - 10/23/2011, 11:48 AM
Robert Downey Jr. may be a huge wrestling fan doesn't mean he should try it. Every movie I seen with a pro wrestler in it was terrible, even Hogan (The Rock is the exception.)
MaddMonkk - 10/23/2011, 11:50 AM
@ELgUaSoN-that wrestling gif actually happens if you take Gusto's last beer from the fridge.
ZombieOverEasy - 10/23/2011, 12:15 PM
Daniels is an awesome guy and an awesome wrestler. I met him at an ROH show a few years back and he was super-cool. I haven't watched wrestling in years, is he still working in TNA?

@MaddMonkk The Rock is the definite exception. Although I thought Expendables was good fun and it had "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Another obvious exception (for me at least) would be The Wrestler.
DarthTesla - 10/23/2011, 12:15 PM
Alberto Del Rio is awesome in his WWE role. He's the top heel in the company for sure.
Miracleman15 - 10/23/2011, 12:22 PM
Awesome post. I live in Lancaster CA, and theres a comic shop I've got my pull at called Bases and Christopher Daniels shops there as well. Passed him a few times on Wednesdays here and there.
OverlyManlyMan - 10/23/2011, 1:07 PM
@ElGuason

totally agree
:D
marvel72 - 10/23/2011, 1:27 PM
@ toxyk & @ elguason

TECHNODROME518 - 10/23/2011, 2:44 PM
Bullseye would be my choice for Daniels.

FALL-EN-ANGEL! CLAP CLAP CLAPCLAPCLAP! FALL-EN-ANGEL! CLAP CLAP CLAPCLAPCLAP!
JWStubner - 10/23/2011, 2:59 PM
Christopher Daniels is by far one of the best active wrestlers on the planet. See him every Thursday night @9PM on Spike TV.
marvelmark - 10/23/2011, 3:07 PM
Daniels is an absolute legend in the wrestling world as well as being an actor prior to his current career.
i'd love to see him move into film.
cwell510 - 10/23/2011, 8:41 PM
Daniels is a great performer, too bad WWE hasn't looked into him for full time. Good to see fellow comic book/wrestling fans here on this site too, lot's of similarities in the two genres.
DVargas802 - 10/24/2011, 11:00 AM
I'm an independent wrestler here in the northeast & honored to be friends with Daniels. Someone mentioned never hearing of a wrestler being a comic book fan. Trust me when I tell you, MANY of us wrestlers are HUGE comic book fans!...lol I think partially why we gravitated to being wrestlers is cause it's the closes thing to being a hero or villain in real life..lol I know I've referenced stuff I've read in comics to what I do. Marvel comics even does regular interviews with wrestlers dubbed "Fighting Fanboys" on their site. They've interviewed Zack Ryder, Daniels, Beth Pheonix & Matt Stryker to name a few. I love CMB & this was a great interview
JohnnyKrypton - 10/24/2011, 12:16 PM
He could play Grant Morrison...
JaySin420 - 10/24/2011, 12:34 PM
Awesome wrestler but he never had a decent gimmick. He's like too small and plain, I don't know. I like the guy, he's a great worker but he's not a star.
TheGreatone0207 - 10/24/2011, 2:17 PM
He would be great at Bullseye.
Thunderkutfo - 10/27/2011, 7:11 PM
I could see him in a lot of different roles!
