The Hobbit is an upcoming two-part epic fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson. and starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Richard Armitage, known for playing Lucas North in the BBC drama series Spooks, as Thorin Oakenshield. Several actors from Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy will reprise their roles, including Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, and Orlando Bloom. Additionally, composer Howard Shore, who wrote the score for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has confirmed his role in both parts of the film project. The two parts, entitled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, are being filmed back to back and are currently in production in New Zealand; principal photography began on March 21, 2011. They are scheduled to be released on December 14, 2012 and December 13, 2013, respectively.

Here is an excerpt from Quint's set report..

What’s Frodo doing in The Hobbit? I don’t want to spoil too much, but I can say that Frodo is part of the connecting tissue between The Hobbit and Fellowship of the Ring.

In fact, the next shot was an over the shoulder on Elijah Wood hammering a sign up on Bag End’s front gate: “No Admittance Except On Party Business.” You guys should have an idea where that puts this moment in the timeline.

Martin Freeman stood in for Ian Holm, who shot all of his scenes and close-ups in London. They would sometimes play footage they’ve already shot to remind themselves of what they had done previously and to help them match up shots. Peter and crew did that for these reverse shots on Elijah and I got to see Ian as Bilbo once again. It was quite extraordinary, actually. Seeing Ian in close up, wearing the wig, the vest and the pointy ears just put a smile on my face.

In what issue is frodo involved this time? I didn´t read the Hobbit but I guess the story took place more than a few years than the fellowship

@cristian the hobbit and the lord of the rings are a part of the red book written by both bilbo and frodo. the events of the hobbit take place i believe 30 years prior to lotr. when frodo leaves middle-earth he gives the red book to samwise, who gives it to his daughter elanor the fair. the scenes involving frodo are of most likely him reading the red book to sam. (it was briefly shown in the return of the king)

That's pretty funny.

I agree on the frodo speculation, he will be there to bookend the story.

If there is one thing that mostly everyone can agree on on this site it is the love for LOTR. I have to say I like them a lot better then Star Wars. If The Hobbit movies are as good as LOTR we're going to have probably the best franchise to ever exist.

"I always thought LOTR was pretty lame. It didn't feel like the book at all nor does this one"-Prettyunclear

You saw this one already? lol I kid. You do realize that when you say it doesn't "feel" like the book, you can only account for your own personal experience of the book. How the book "feels" for you is obviously different from others interpretation of it. But hey, there's always that Spider-man flick yo. Not into the Hobbit, check that one out. It has the Liz- wait a minute. What he [frick] are you doing here?!

Cool! It appears the retelling of Bilbo's adventure will likely be told prior to his birthday party (Frodo's wearing same outfit as when he greets Gandalf when he arrives in Hobbiton).

LotR is the best trilogy for sure. What's weird is that when you hear opinions in real life (like your family and friends) they like the movie that everyone on the internet despises lol. But with LotR, most people I meet in real life don't like the LotR cause they think it's boring. And then I hear complaints that the giant war scenes are boring and too fast for them. This makes me speechless as I think the war scenes are [frick]ing awesome, and I wish there were more of them haha.

It just ironic how people in real life differ from the online community.

Completely agree. Jackson created the Epic of all Epic's. And the brilliance of it came from all sides, from the story they were telling, the actors they choose, the 'smart' use of CGI, the sheer brilliance of New Zealand for the sites etc.

@ Vital Thats strange. Im the only real SciFi Fantasy Comic obsessed person in my group of friends and family, and yet every single one of them (even my Mother) recon it was awesome.
The guys at work all think it was good. The only person who didnt like it was someone who hated the books before the movie came out (i.e. carry over prejedice).

To be honest lol i liked the books but I LOVED the movies.

"I always thought LOTR was pretty lame. It didn't feel like the book at all nor does this one"

I've read the books at least three times and I couldn't disagree with you more and how have we even seen enough of The Hobbit yet to know if it feels like the book or not? To each their own, but I think you're on your own with that perspective.

The books are, although groundbreakingly innovative and tremendously imaginative for their time(Tolkien set the stage baby, clearly).......were.........blander than bland-ie-die bland-bland! Dull. Drums. They read more like non fiction because of the lack of passion invoked. I'd go so far as to say I DESPISED reading them.........almost, if it weren't so NECESSARY...

Thank GOD for Peter Jackson. Thank GOD for his vision, for the movies. He blew Star Wars the HELL out of the UNIVERSE, in terms of quality in every facet of the movie......(clearly not relying on ONE actor like a certain HARRISON FORD *smirk* as in my mind's eye, Star Wars is/was/is/was CRAP w/o him!)

I really wish Peter---the BASTARD---would helm a comic book movie.....ala Marvel Studios! Cross those fingers people!!!!

Man....when this trailer hits.....*zoiinnnkkk*

xGambitxXxSuperboyx - LOL, Trude's right. You never read the books. Would be prettier to admit it.

If there's a word that has been used to exhaustion these times is "EPIC".

But its exactly what Tolkien's Legendarium is.

@Intruder - That is my favorite scene from the trilogy, and probably of all time. I still get chills every time I watch it.

The only ones I think that can compare are:

Titanic - When the rear of the ship rises out of the water.

Star Wars ep. 3 - Don't laugh, but one of the few good things about the prequels was the kick ass fight scene between Obi-wan and Anakin.

I'm sure there are others but I can't think of any right now.

"Intruder/Aklash": *stepped on some proverbial TOES, did he?**grin* Heheh. I can RESPECT that you both---along with the LIKES of the WORLD....mm...LOVE the HECK out of Tolkien's Literature. And I readily invited my TRIBUTE to him because of his innovation---he's the practical grandfather for the fantasy genre as we know it---but...............in my own opinion(and my own alone*smile*), The Hobbit + The Lord of the Rings Trilogy in Literary form.....do NO justice for me because of them reading very documentary-esque like. I would require some emotion, some passion, and I feel that is the greatest downfall to his books. Is it because of them being "dated"? Is it the old style language/lingo in which the whole of the text is encompassed? More than anything, I got the "non fiction" feeling and experience when going through his novels---which shouldn't be further from the truth as the material is Middle Earth's created world.

Take George R.R. Martin on the other hand, and his Song of Ice and Fire series....most notably "GAME OF THRONES" as the first book and that having been made into a nice hbo series last spring. Now THOSE are some PHENOMENAL(again in my opinion) books baby! Tremendous. Highest to be recommended! The HBO series isn't bad either...

Lord of the Rings? It's an extreme for me. Again, the books were so far lacking in my view. I read the hobbit and the fellowship, before the first movie. Then each preceding book to the other two. Night and Day. And again. NO CONTEST! I think the rhyme-zie songs in the Hobbit(notably the elves *``Oh where are you going....tra-la...``*) are cute and all.(hehe, and the 70's cartooons are classically cute as well) Lil' spice. Gollum's exchange was fun, again in the hobbit. But as a whole, I have respect for Tolkien. For being innovative, for being imaginative. For writing when there was a war going on...*smirk* But PETER JACKSON is and shall forever be the ONE TRUE.....LORD OF THE RING(s).

In my *gasp* opinion of course....;)

*``The greatest adventure...is what lies ahead....``*
